If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.

What does Christmas mean to me? I always enjoy Christmas. It is the time when my family comes together to celebrate. This event has become more pronounced when my older siblings weren’t home due
to school or work. It does not matter whether our Christmas would be rich or not (I say rich or otherwise since around this time, typhoons hit and destroy livelihood), what matters is that the whole family
is present to celebrate Christmas. That alone makes Christmas very special.
Our Christmas in the Philippines is very different. We make noise. When the clock hits 12:00
o’clock, we light loud booming fireworks. Then we come together to the table to share ‘noche buena’.
Noche Buena is good night. That good night is the night when Christ was born. Since the celebration of
Christ’s birth is marked with good food on the table, and having not understood the Spanish language
during the time of the conquest, the ‘noche buena’ was mistakenly thought to be the celebration around
the table.
That celebration around the table in most homes is not inexpensive. You will feast on lots of
special food you cannot find in an ordinary dinner. And the center piece is the famous whole lechon
(roast pig).
I never had that kind of celebration. I envied those who did. Yet I was thankful because I believe my Christmases were all
special.

Around the table of the ‘noche buena’ is always joy. How can it be not joy to be with family during this special celebration?
Family is a bundle of joy.
We may not have eaten the richest Christmas dinner, but I am very fortunate that I have celebrated meaningful Christmases.
I have celebrated Christmas joy sans the fanciness. Family is more than enough.

Feast of the Holy Family. Jesus was born to the human family. He became man. He has a mother and a father and he has a
home.
The Feast of the Holy Family makes us realize that mercy is brought home, to the human family, when Jesus Christ was
born among us. Each family, each home, is a community where God’s mercy is attained to the fullest. Through a family, there is love
and concern and sharing.

The Feast of the Holy Family also invites us to strengthen marriage and family life. As a faith community, we try our best to
help each other help marriage and family life grow. I encourage each family of our parish to bless and encourage one another and
become examples of love, concern and sharing to all our community members.
Feliz Navidad a todos y cada uno!
¿Qué significa la Navidad para mí? Siempre me gusta la Navidad. Es la época en que mi familia se reúne para celebrar. Este
evento se marcaba cuando mis hermanos mayores no estaban en casa debido a la escuela o al trabajo. No importa si nuestra Navidad
era rico o no (digo ricos o de otra manera ya que en esta época, tifones golpean y destruyen los medios para el sustento), pero lo que
importa es que toda la familia está presente para celebrar la Navidad. Eso por sí solo hace que la Navidad sea muy especial.
Nuestra Navidad en las Filipinas es muy diferente. Hacemos ruido. Cuando el reloj marque las 12:00, encendemos fuegos
artificiales. Entonces nos unimos a la mesa para compartir la "Noche Buena". Noche Buena es buena noche. Que es una buena noche es la noche en que nació Cristo. Desde la celebración y el nacimiento de Cristo está marcado con una buena comida en la mesa, y
no haber entendido el idioma español durante la época de la conquista, la "Noche Buena" se pensaba por error en la celebración alrededor de la mesa.
Esa celebración alrededor de la mesa en la mayoría de los hogares no es barato. Va a darse un banquete de mucha comida
especial que usted no puede encontrar en una cena ordinaria. Y la pieza central es el famoso lechón entero (puerco asado).
Nunca he tenido ese tipo de celebración. Envidiaba a los que lo tenían. Sin embargo, yo estaba agradecido porque creo que
mis navidades eran especial.

Alrededor de la mesa de la "Noche Buena" hay siempre la alegría. ¿Cómo no puede ser alegre si esta la familia presente
durante esta celebración especial? La familia es un paquete de alegría.
Puede que no hayamos comido la cena más rica de Navidad, pero me siento muy afortunado de que he celebrado navidades
significativas. He celebrado alegría de la Navidad sans la fanciness. La familia es más que suficiente.

Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Jesús nació de la familia humana. Él se hizo hombre. Él tiene una madre y un padre y él tiene
una casa.
La Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia nos hace comprender que la misericordia es llevado a casa, a la familia humana, cuando

Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on Monday, Dec. 28th
at 9:00am – 11:00am in the basement of the Lady of
Guadalupe House – entrance is in the back of the

VIDA FAMILIAR
Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial. Perhaps
this is the most important message we can glean from today’s readings. If Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can trip up
sometimes—can disconnect—then we shouldn’t find it
surprising when such things happen to us as well. And parents everywhere (children, too) can probably relate to—
and take some solace in—the Gospel’s account of Mary
and Joseph after Jesus explained why he stayed behind in
the temple. They heard his words, Luke tells us, “But they
did not understand what he said to them” (Luke 2:50).
Amen! Nevertheless, Jesus does go back home with them,
and continues to thrive under their care.
La vida familiar es sagrada, pero no faltan las dificultades. Este puede ser el mensaje más importante que encontramos en las lecturas de hoy. Si Jesús, María y José pueden tropezar de vez en cuando –desconectarse– entonces
no nos debe sorprender cuando eso mismo nos ocurre a
nosotros también. Y los padres dondequiera que estén
(hijos también) pueden ver el parecido –y hasta consolarse
– con el relato bíblico que habla de María y José después
de que Jesús les explica porqué se quedó atrás en el templo. Escucharon sus palabras, nos dice Lucas, “pero ellos
no comprendieron lo que les acababa de decir” (Lucas
2:50). ¡Amén! Sin embargo, Jesús sí se va con ellos para la
casa, y continúa creciendo bajo su cuidado.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
This New Year’s Eve, at the turning of the year, you
may catch a glimpse of the old year, a cartoon figure of a
hunched old man with a sickle, Father Time. Where else
but in this column could you learn that this is in fact a
pope? December 31 was in the old calendar the feast of St.
Sylvester. Legend says that Sylvester healed the Emperor
Constantine of leprosy, and presided at the liturgy of baptism for the grateful emperor. In 314, he was chosen pope,
and it fell to him to organize the peacetime church, free at
last from persecution. He founded the Lateran Basilica, the
cathedral of the Diocese of Rome.
In northern Europe “Sylvester Night” is a time of great
parties with eating, dancing, and singing—recalling perhaps the joy of the church in the fresh air of Sylvester’s
papacy. In Poland, there was great fear as the year 1000
approached that an immense dragon would devour the
earth and set fire to the heavens. The people prayed earnestly to St. Sylvester, trusting that the saint would not
permit such suffering on his feast day. They’ve been celebrating ever since!
Many New Year’s customs have pagan roots, like the
British “First Footer” tradition. The idea is that the first
person setting foot into your house in the new year determines the luck for the year ahead. The ideal first footer
was not a bit like old Pope Sylvester, but rather a tall, darkhaired man carrying the right gift. A handsome first footer
meant the year ahead would be pleasant, and if he carried
bread or a shovel of coal there would be food and warmth

El primer domingo después de la Navidad celebramos
la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Los latinos somos un pueblo
muy unido en familia. Para nosotros es más que un pequeño grupo compuesto de padre, madre, hijos e hijas. La familia para nosotros los latinos es un conjunto grande de
abuelos, abuelas, tíos, tías, primos, primas, compadres,
comadres, suegros, suegras y otros más además del padre,
la madre y los hijos. Para los latinos una fiesta que celebra
la familia de Jesús es la cosa más natural del mundo.
Extrañamente esta fiesta no es muy antigua. En realidad es una celebración que data de comienzos de la época
moderna en el siglo XVII. Antes de estas fechas la familia
de Jesús casi siempre era entendida como compuesta por
Jesús, María y Ana (la madre de María). Se daba por hecho
que José estaba por allí. Pero en el siglo XVII muchos perdieron sus padres pues tenían que ir a las fábricas a trabajar. Por eso el magisterio instituyó la conmemoración de la
Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José para recordar a los
padres cristianos su deber ante sus hijos y su esposa.

A drop-in group open to anyone grieving a death

Comfort Crafting Circle

Service Opportunity Reminders
Thank you to all our parishioners who

underwear, rain gear, sweatshirts,
blankets and coats for the homeless in
our community. Special thanks to our
youth who assembled care packages
filled with hats, scarves, gloves, socks, toiletries, other
items and fleece tie blankets that they made over the
past several months. They will be distributed by City
Hall to three local shelters: Jackson St. Youth Shelter,
Albany Helping Hands and Signs of Victory Mission.
