News of his resurrection gave them hope despite the disbelief. When he appeared to them, they were overjoyed. And again they were saddened when Jesus bade them farewell as he to return to the Father. Like any normal relationship, Jesus and his disciples parted ways. Jesus’ leaving was necessary. He told his disciples that he must leave so that the Father can send the Advocate in his name. Fr. Ron Rolheiser said that there is a point in our lives that we need to part ways. By going away, the presence of the one who left is experienced in a very different way and can be better than physical presence. This paradox is true to those who go on their way without severing their bond of love. An example of this is children leaving their parents when they become adults. In the celebration of the Ascension of our Lord to the Father, we rejoice that Jesus, who returned to the Father, remains to be present in our midst through the power of the Holy Spirit, through the Sacraments and through the Church. Jesus promised to his disciples that the Father will send the Holy Spirit in his name. Through the Holy Spirit sent to us in Jesus’ name, the baptized who are faithful to Jesus are able to sustain the Church. Jesus remained, not physically, but more than his physical presence are signs and manifestations that Christ is truly present in the here and now. o0o Jesus prepares a place for us so that when he returns, he will take us to himself and have us join with the Holy ones of God. If this is the case, then there is nothing to be sad about Jesus’ leaving. Having said that, we, who are left behind, should wait in joyful expectation for Jesus’ return. While waiting for Jesus’ return, we have to depend from the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. As Jesus already told us, the Holy Spirit, our advocate, will teach us and remind us of the teachings of Jesus. Many of us forget the Holy Spirit. As the Church helped by the Holy Spirit since its birth, let us always call on the Holy Spirit’s help in different situations in our lives. o0o May is Mary’s month. It is a practice that during this month, we offer Mary flowers. Quite interestingly, who would not notice this gesture from our very own Pope Francis? Pope Francis offers a bouquet of flowers to the statue of the Blessed Virgin in any church he visits. Offering the Blessed Virgin Mary a bouquet of flowers is a beautiful practice. It is a simple gesture of expressing love to a Mother so dear. By the expression of love in the offered bouquet of flowers we are also able to give thanks to God for giving us wonderful gifts like having a wonderful Mother in Mary, having a wonderful mother through our earthly mothers, and having numerous gifts by having wonderful mothers in the world. I would like to invite you to find time to offer flowers to Mary this special month of May. You can bring flowers at Mass or outside the Mass. We have four beautiful stations to offer flowers to her, namely, the icon of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the sanctuary, the icon of the Our Lady of Guadalupe, the statue of the Madonna and Child in the chapel and the statue of Mary on the patio. o0o Happy mothers’ day to all our moms. Thank you for caring, loving and nurturing us. God bless you all and may you be guided, protected and inspired by our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mother of God. There will be flowers offered to the mothers at all Masses this weekend. Please accept our salute to those whose ministry is in the home as well as out in the world. May God bless you as richly as you bless your children! Prayer Corner Please keep all those who are in the military, or are ill or suffering in your prayers. For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed: This bulletin insert will be printed in parts through the coming weeks. This article is written by Fr. Richard Heilman, a priest of the Diocese of Madison (WI). He is an author and writes regularly in Roman Catholic Man. Among his writings, I found this one beneficial for the parish to read. I encourage you to take time to read and reflect about this. AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL THOSE LOOKING TO RESTORE A SENSE OF THE SACRED (Part I) Fr. Richard Heilman April 11, 2016 Written From The Trenches This past Easter Sunday, a future saint (hopefully) of our Church, Mother Angelica, passed to eternal life. Personally, I believe Mother Angelica, single-handedly, began to turn the Barque of St. Peter around during a time when the Church was moving at breakneck speed into a Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. Much like a loving parent watching her toddler wander out into a road with busy traffic, Mother Angelica was stern and disciplinary in her rebukes of this terribly dangerous trend. As many of her quotes have been shared in the days following Mother’s passing, I was especially struck by this one: “Those who tell the truth love you. Those who tell you what you want to hear love themselves.” In that spirit of honesty, I felt compelled to write the following. I write as a parish priest in, what I like to refer as, “the trenches.” One could also call it the “front lines.” According to Fr. William Saunders, “The pastor, mindful that he is to exercise his authority as an extension of the bishop and in the example of Christ, the Good Shepherd, must care for the souls of the faithful entrusted to him.” While pastors are allowed a certain amount of freedom, they remain an extension of the bishop. That means, among many other things, the pastor must remain in concert with the bishop and his desire to build up the body of Christ. Oftentimes, if the people are unhappy with the way in which their pastor is shepherding them, letters flow into the bishop’s office. Or, the people simply shop around for a nearby parish where the priest is “doing it” in the way they wish. Today, most grievances revolve around the Mass. And, by and large, the grievances have to do with any priest’s efforts to bring the Mass more closely to the “Actual Mass” of Vatican II. While many priests are supported by their bishop in their efforts to move toward the more pure form of the “Mass of Vatican II,” some are not supported, as some bishops find such efforts disruptive, or they simply may not agree with such efforts altogether. As a result, many priests who truly believe it is necessary for us to restore the Mass and, with this restoration, a greater sense of the sacred, will simply decide it is not worth the repercussions. This is especially stressful for younger priests and seminarians who are receiving a much higher quality formation than we received and, therefore, more clearly understand such a dire need. Exceedingly Concerned I count myself among those, priests and lay faithful alike, who are exceedingly concerned with the trajectory of the Catholic Church in America – the actual loss of souls – in this post-Vatican II era. According to the 2002 Index of Leading Catholic Indicators, “In 1965, only one percent of U.S. parishes were without a priest. Today, there are 3,000 priestless parishes, 15 percent of all U.S. parishes. Between 1965 and 2002, the number of seminarians dropped from 49,000 to 4,700, a decline of over 90 percent. In 1965, there were 104,000 teaching nuns. Today, there are 8,200, a decline of 94 percent. A 1958 Gallup Poll reported that three in four Catholics attended church on Sundays. A recent study by the University of Notre Dame found that only one in four now attend. Only 10 percent of lay religious teachers now accept Church teaching on contraception. Fifty-three percent believe a Catholic can have an abortion and remain a good Catholic. Sixty-five percent believe that Catholics may divorce and remarry. Seventy-seven percent believe one can be a good Catholic without going to Mass on Sundays. By one New York Times poll, 70 percent of all Catholics in the age group 18 to 44 believe the Eucharist is merely a ‘symbolic reminder’ of Jesus.” And, if we hoped things were getting any better since this 2002 study, a recent CARA study found that, just since AD 2000, 14 million more Catholics have left the faith, parish religious education of children has dropped by 24%, Catholic school attendance has dropped by 19%, infant baptism has dropped by 28%, adult baptism has dropped by 31%, and sacramental Catholic marriages have dropped by 41%. Setting aside any debate on the value of the documents of Vatican II, it is clear to any reasonable person that a trend was set in motion, after the council, by so-called leading experts, to make drastic changes in the Church and, most especially, in the Mass. This trend is known by many as the “Spirit of Vatican II,” since these so-called experts could not point to actual writings from the council to justify their innovations and eradications, but simply proclaimed it was implied by a spirit of the documents. For the most part, the post-Vatican II trend was one that sought to demythologize the faith; to root out any sense of the supernatural or the sacred (most especially, in the Mass). Many see the devastation of the past 50 years as the coup de grâce of a Deism that finds it’s roots in the period of the Enlightenment By the time I entered seminary in the 1980s, our training seemed to have an overriding theme: We were called to completely rethink former notions of Catholicism. We seemed to look at our ancestors’ way of believing and practicing their faith much like we would look back at those who believed the world was flat … they meant well, but they just didn’t know any better. This is why it is often referred to as the heresy of “Modernism,” as it looks to erase the old in favor of the new. For example, we were not offered one minute of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in all of my seminary training. Also, it was understood that if someone was seen with a rosary, they would need “extra” spiritual direction (or even psychological counseling), as the rosary raised a red flag of fanaticism. Scripture studies included “explaining away” such miracles as the multiplication of the loaves and fishes as the “miracle of sharing.” Our formation was almost entirely cerebral, with little or no attention to the spiritual or supernatural. Many of the theologians we focused upon during our studies have since been revealed to be heretical. In this workshop we’ll examine the strong association between sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction, and demonstrate the role of effective communication in fostering sexual satisfaction. We’ll also discuss how differences in sexual desire can be managed, and how changing life circumstances, such as stress and having children, can impact on sexuality. We’ll describe the nature of common sexual problems. We’ll describe and challenge some common myths that may lead to unrealistic sexual expectations. There is no cost, but please call 541-926-1449 to register ahead. Thank you. Tetzel’s Celebration June 5th beginning at 11am Thank you to those who have already chipped in to make this a wonderful day for Tetzel! We are still a ways away from covering all the costs, so if you have been meaning to share your treasures with us in this way, please do. Tetzel has been such a big part of our parish, especially with the youth. We want to let him know in no uncertain terms how much we appreciate him and wish him well. In case you haven’t seen this before - here’s the scoop: Tetzel will be celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving for becoming a priest on Sunday, June 5th at 11am. Immediately following there will be a reception in the Gathering Space and the Gym. There are many groups who are jumping in to plan, cook, set-up and clean-up, but we do still need help with meeting costs. This is going to be a very big event, so help with the costs would be highly valued. Please fill out the information below and put it in an envelope with cash or check (made payable to St. Mary’s), then drop the envelope in the collection plate or bring it by the office. If you wish to use a credit card, please call Joni at the office 541-926-1449. Thank you so much for helping make this a terrific day of Thanksgiving for Father Tetzel! NAME ________________________________________________ Phone _____________________ EMAIL ________________________________________________ Amount $___________________ Thanks Again!!! Larry Beary is retiring! He has been working for Our Lady of Perpetual Help for about 15 years. Join us in the Gathering Space on May 15th at Noon for a reception to thank him for all he has done and to celebrate his new (hopefully relaxed) future. If you are interested in helping with the event, please call the office and speak with Marty. 541-926-1449 Notice of Upcoming Big Events & Crowded Parking Just to give everyone a heads-up about crowded seating and parking conditions for the following event: June 5th - Graduation Mass will be at the 8:30 am Mass with a reception following, then Tetzel will have his Thanksgiving Mass as a new priest at 11 am, with a LARGE reception to follow. At all Masses this day, participants can expect snug seating and packed parking. With the receptions between, there won’t be the usual clearing of cars between Masses. We recommend those who have the option of attending Saturday evening Mass instead of the ones mentioned above may not only be more comfortable, but would also lighten the load for participants in the big events. Anyone who will be attending the big events - maybe you can work out carpooling? Or - just expect to park a ways out. We hope to block off more parking for those who need to park closer for health reasons. Please respect any cones or signs that are posted. Thank you for your understanding. The Cristeros and The Martyrs of The Mexican Revolution Join Catholic Answers President Christopher Check at the Mt. Angel Festhalle, in Mt. Angel, Oregon, May 13th at 7:00 PM for this multimedia presentation. This is a benefit event for St. John Bosco High School. Admission is $20.00 per person ($30.00 per couple), at the door.
