Joseph Peterson Keefe Yaritza Burgos NEW YORK CITY Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016 “Misericordiae Vultus” (The Face of Mercy) Bull of Indiction – Francis, Bishop of Rome, Servant of the Servants of God The following is an excerpt from the beginning paragraphs of the papal bull. For the full text, please visit: http:// w2.vatican.va. 1. Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. 2. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. 3. At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church; a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective. The Holy Year will open on 8 December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope. 4. I have chosen the date of 8 December because of its rich meaning in the recent history of the Church. In fact, I will open the Holy Door on the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. The Church feels a great need to keep this event alive. We recall the poignant words of Saint John XXIII when, opening the Council, he indicated the path to follow: “Now the Bride of Christ wishes to use the medicine of mercy rather than taking up arms of severity … The Catholic Church, as she holds high the torch of Catholic truth at this Ecumenical Council, wants to show herself a loving mother to all; patient, kind, moved by compassion and goodness toward her separated children.” 5. The Jubilee year will close with the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King on 20 November 2016. How much I desire that the year to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God! May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst! 2 APRIL 19, 2015 bilee year is the Holy Door, which is the northernmost entrance at St. Peter's in the Vatican. It is cemented shut and only opened for Jubilee Years. The four papal basilicas in Rome also have a holy door. Basilicas and other churches may be designated as places to cross the threshold of a holy door as a sign of pardon or remission of sins for the living and the dead. The faithful are invited to Rome or other basilicas and churches to cross the threshold of a holy door as a sign of receiving God’s mercy. The pope hopes to reawaken mercy in our heart and in the heart of the Church, mercy which is the Face of Jesus Christ for the world. Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016 What’s a papal bull? A papal bull is a particular type of letter issued by a Pope to address a particular issue or issue a proclamation, as in this case, to declare an extraordinary jubilee year. Bull is the English translation for the Latin, “bulla” which is the lead or metal circular seal that was appended to the letter in order to authenticate it. Today, in the publication of a bull, the Pope refers to himself as the "Servant of the Servants of God." What is a Jubilee Year? The jubilee tradition has its roots in Judaism, when a jubilee year was celebrated every 50 years to restore equality among all of the children of Israel, offering new possibilities to families that had lost property and even their personal freedom (Leviticus 25:10). The Catholic Church has called jubilee years every 25 or 50 years since 1300 and special jubilee years from time to time, known as extraordinary jubilee years. The last jubilee year was held in 2000. The last extraordinary jubilee year was held in 1983 to celebrate 1,950 years since the death and resurrection of Jesus. The jubilee year is an opportunity for Catholics to receive blessing and pardon from God and remission of sins and, in the upcoming extraordinary jubilee year, by showing and living the way of mercy. In the Parish Center after the 5:1 5PM Mass Why did Pope Francis proclaim an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy? Mercy is the theme of Francis’ pontificate. His episcopal motto: Miserando Atque Eligendo is taken from the homily of St. Bede the Venerable, during which he commented on the Gospel passage of the calling of Matthew: Vidit ergo lesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi Sequere me (“Jesus, therefore, sees the tax collector, and since he sees by having mercy and by choosing, he says to him, ‘Follow me’”). The pope writes that he has called for the year because: "Perhaps we have long since forgotten how to show and live the way of mercy … The temptation ... to focus exclusively on justice made us forget that this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensable step … The time has come for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more … It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters … Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope." What does a jubilee year mean for Catholics in the coming year? Special prayer events will be planned around the world, from the parish to the Vatican.
