April 3, 2:45 p.m. Extraordinary Jubilee of Divine Mercy “The Feast and Hour of Great Mercy” Take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence of this great Feast of Mercy. Holy Hour (NO Mass) Saint Faustina’s Relic will be present. Presiding: Rev. Martin Tran and Deacon José Manuel Chavez The Novena and Chaplet of Divine Mercy may be said at any time, but our Lord specifically told St. Faustina to recite it during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy. “Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you. (1541) Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death.” (687). It is likewise appropriate to pray the Novena and Chaplet during the Hour of Great Mercy—3 o’clock each afternoon—recalling the time of Christ’s abandonment and death on the cross. The devotion, which began on Good Friday, should precede the Feast. Please join us, in the church at 3:00 p.m. to say the nine day devotion, except on Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday, when we say the devotion on our own. Handouts for Easter: Weekly Easter one-page handouts, in English and in Spanish, are available in the brochure racks at the entrances of the church and on our parish website. These handouts include prayer and Scripture reflections, as well as daily suggestions for Keeping the Seasons for each Sunday of the Easter season.. Monthly Food Drive OLG Small Groups growing faith in circles Seven reasons why small, faith sharing groups that meet weekly in homes are important to Catholic Christians at OLG: 1. Jesus modeled small group ministry with the Apostles. 2. Meeting in the home is modeled by the early church. 3. Small groups give us a heightened sense of belonging to our church community and faith family. 4. Small groups help us grow and mature spiritually. 5. It’s a place to go to be known, loved, and cared for. 6. Forming bonds and deeper friendships with fellow Catholics helps faith to grow. 7. Small Groups are where Faith Formation occurs outside of our big Church. To join or for information, contact: Nick Rawe [email protected] or David da Rosa (714) 788-8648. Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For Easter Sunday, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Martin Shaw’s “With a Voice of Singing.” In addition to composing and conducting, Shaw (1875-1958) was an opera impresario who helped revive interest in the stage works of Henry Purcell. Shaw is remembered today for his contributions to the Oxford Book of Carols (1928) and his popularization of the Gaelic folk tune Bunessan, to which he set the poem “Morning Has Broken.” “With a Voice of Singing” is the best known of his choral works, which also include the oratorio The Redeemer (1945) and the cantata God’s Grandeur. Incidentally, his nephew was actor Sebastian Shaw, who played the unmasked Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. During Communion, the choir sings Jan Sanborn’s “Christ is Risen.” Sanborn is a staff accompanist at Cal State Northridge and organist at Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena. She has also accompanied the Roger Wagner Chorale on several tours to Asia. Jan has published numerous choral anthems and a collection of solo songs for worship. Jan has accompanied several of my voice students and has also served as a substitute rehearsal pianist under my direction. She is an accomplished musician with a remarkably broad knowledge of vocal and choral repertoire and it is a pleasure to include her anthem in today’s celebration. On behalf of the Gloria Dei Choir, please accept our best wishes for a joyous Easter! —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director, Gloria Dei Choir Giving Thanks When You Shop Please be sure to thank the generous advertisers in our parish bulletin by patronizing their businesses and mentioning you saw their ad.
