Dear Parent/Guardian;
Once again the summer is coming to an end, and we are looking forward to welcoming your student(s) back to
school! School begins for all students with a full day on September 8th, 2014 – promptly at 7:45 AM.
Elementary students will have a new playground that meets the most up to date safety standards, and will see a
major focus on writing across the curriculum as teachers roll out a Writer’s Workshop Process developed at
Columbia University. IPads will be available for classroom use to support instruction, and our 10th period for
elementary students will continue to provide programming that enriches instruction. Secondary students can
look forward to the use of Chromebooks in their studies – and at the middle school level (Grades 6,7 and 8)
there will be an infusion of theme based projects into the curriculum, as high school continues their focus of
college and career readiness, through internships, and opportunities for real-life application of skills.
Based on this year’s discipline data reflecting that many infractions involved inappropriate cell phone usage
during school hours, a major focus at the secondary level will be on responsible use of technology. We will
share the data with our students, and generate rules with regard to cell phone usage during school hours. Parents
should know that NO student in grades K-8 will be permitted to have a cell phone on them during the school
day. If they have a phone, they MUST leave it in their backpack (locker) for use before and after school. If you
need to reach your child during school hours, you can contact the main office, and we will be sure to put get the
student for you, or assure that a message gets to your child. We will be working to develop clear rules with
regard to cell phones for our high school students, with grades 9 and 10 being a bit more restrictive than for our
upper classmen, in true PBIS fashion where expectations are explicitly taught.
To assist families in understanding the common core standards, assessment, and the shifts in teaching and
learning, we are redesigning our traditional Back to School Night. The PTO will host its annual Back to School
Barbecue on September 25th – mark your calendar. This will be a welcome back by the PTO. Our Back to
School night will be scheduled for the following week. It will be broken down into four sessions (Grades PreK2; 3 through 5; 6 through 8; and 9 through 12). This will provide us an opportunity to discuss grade-level
specific details about the educational changes that are upon us. We hope to provide a continuation of that parent
education program through the school year, in an effort to assist you in being able to support your student(s).
More specific information will be sent out to you.

Estimados Padres de Familia/Tutores;
Una vez más el verano está llegando a su fin, ¡y estamos deseando dar la bienvenida a su(s) estudiante (s) de regreso a la
escuela! Las clases comenzaran para todos los estudiantes con un día completo el día 8 de septiembre, 2014 – puntualmente a
las 7:45 AM.
Los alumnos de primaria tendrán un nuevo parque de juegos el cual satisface los más modernos estándares de seguridad, y
también verán un mayor enfoque en la escritura a través del currículo a como los maestros despliegan el Proceso del Taller de
Escritores desarrollado en la Universidad de Columbia. También estarán disponibles IPads para su uso en el aula para apoyar la
instrucción, y nuestro período 10 para los estudiantes de primaria seguirá ofreciendo una programación que enriquece la
instrucción. Los estudiantes de secundaria podrán hacer uso de Chromebooks en sus estudios - y en el nivel de la escuela media
(grados 6,7 y 8) habrá una infusión de proyectos temáticos basados en el currículo, y en la escuela secundaria se continuara
enfocándose en la universidad y en la preparación profesional, a través de pasantías (practicas), y oportunidades para la
aplicación de sus habilidades en la vida real.
Basándonos en los datos de disciplina de este año, los cuales reflejan que muchas infracciones involucraron el uso inapropiado
de teléfonos celulares durante el horario escolar, tendremos un enfoque importante en el nivel secundario sobre el uso
responsable de la tecnología. Vamos a compartir los datos con los estudiantes y generaremos reglas con respecto al uso de
teléfonos celulares durante el horario escolar. Los padres deben saber que a ningún estudiante en los grados K-8 se le permite
tener un teléfono celular en el transcurso de la jornada escolar. Si tienen un teléfono, se debe de dejar en su mochila (en el
locker) para su uso antes y después de la escuela. Si usted necesita contactar a su hijo (a) durante las horas de escuela, usted
puede comunicarse con la oficina principal, y nos aseguraremos de llamar a el/la estudiante para que hable con él/ella, o nos
aseguraremos de que su mensaje le llegue a su hijo(a). Estaremos trabajando para desarrollar normas claras en lo que respecta a
teléfonos celulares para nuestros estudiantes de secundaria, siendo un poco más estrictos con los grados 9 y 10 que con los
grados 11 y 12, siguiendo el estilo PBIS donde se enseñan las expectativas de manera explícita.
Para ayudar a las familias en la comprensión de las normas del common core, evaluación, y los cambios en la enseñanza y el
aprendizaje, estamos rediseñando nuestra tradicional Noche de Regreso a Clase. El PTO será el anfitrión de la Parrillada Anual
de Regreso a Clases el día 25 de septiembre – Aparte la fecha. La Noche de Regreso a Clases está programada para la semana
siguiente, y estará dividida en cuatro sesiones (Grados Pre-K-2; 3 a 5; 6 a 8 y 9 a 12). Esto nos brindará la oportunidad de hablar
sobre los detalles específicos de cada grado sobre los cambios educativos que estamos enfrentando. Esperamos proporcionar
una continuación de ese programa de educación a los padres a través del año escolar, en un esfuerzo de ayudarles para que les
sea posible apoyar a su(s) estudiante (s). Les enviaremos más información más específica.
