Anthony Morales is a writer/educator from the Bronx who has appeared on HBO’s Def
Poetry and toured the US and Puerto Rico. He currently is an English facilitator at El
Puente Academy for Peace and Justice in Brooklyn, NY. He has published three books,
Story Avenue (2004), Chevere Cafre (2009), and Dice Queso (2010).
¡WEPA! FESTIVAL PERFORMERS
Such As Us is a 6 member group of native New Yorkers which performs a politically progressive repertoire of original songs in the NY Metropolitan area. Their music has been
described as folk rock with a good deal of emphasis on rock, and features an interesting variety of instrumentation and harmonic vocals. Members are all activists and have
worked for peace and justice individually and together throughout their lives, including

YOWALKA: A worldly, graceful, and elegant performer and instructor of Egyptian Raqs
Sharqi, is affectionately known as “Yogi.” Yowalka was originally introduced to the art
of Middle Eastern Dance (a.k.a. Bellydance) by Ana Luna, in her home country of the
Dominican Republic. Unbeknownst to her, her passion for bellydance would take her
around the globe and follow her to her new home in New York City. It was in New York
City, referred by her main teacher, where she began her studies with the worldwide
famous and unique master Yousry Sharif, and became a devoted student of Egyptian
Style dancing and music as well. Yowalka has worked a variety with renowned artists
such as Serena, Dalia Carela & her Dance Collective, Mohamed Shahin and Helm Music
Ensemble among others. She is currently a member of Zikrayat, and El Puente’s CADRE. Yowalka holds a degree in Anthropology from Hunter College.
The El Puente Dance Ensemble is the resident dance company of The El Puente Williamsburg Leadership Center. Our youth are empowered to use dance as artistic expression,
as vehicle for community liberation and to bring a voice to social issues. The ensemble
performs at special events, local community schools, and El Puente events. Interested
students are selected by audition. Our junior company is open to students ages 7-13
and our Senior Company ages 14 to 18.
Hecho en Brooklyn: At the heart of Hecho in Brooklyn is the interplay between rock
and carribean music. To some they are a merengue band with a rock edge. HenB take
Merengue and stripped it down, to put a punk rock approach on the style.
Irka Mateo is an award winning singer, songwriter, and folklorist known for her unique
and upbeat Latin /World Music based on Dominican Folk. She has had a long and successful international career participating in renowned music festivals and venues such
as: the UN Headquarters, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Veracruz Caribbean Festival in
Mexico, the Festival Del Fuego in Santiago, Cuba to name a few. The World Music Chart
- Europe listed her CD Anacaona as one of the best World Music albums of 2010.
Obsesión: Magia Lopez and Alexey Rodriguez of the Cuban hip-hop group Obsesión are
considered founders and leaders of the Hip Hop movement in Cuba. Obsesión continues to make great music and play a vital role in the island’s hip hop scene. The duo has
produced three successful albums, the most recent being the “black album,” which was
released in 2011. They have shared the stage with a number of Cuban and international
artists, including Roberto Fonseca, the Roots and Common. As the 20th anniversary of
Cuban hip hop approaches and important economic and social changes are occurring
in the country, Obsesión is working hard to use their music and activism to create positive social change. Aside from making music, Obsesión is active in their local communities; organizing art, music and dance lessons, hosting workshops on racism and domestic violence, running donation programs for those most in need and other important
initiatives.
Wil Nieves has a degree in Business Management, and has been teaching professionally
for over 5 years. He has performed in numerous salsa congresses, and for charities and
other nonprofit events. Currently he offers his teaching expertise and knowledge of
Latin music, dance, and culture to his students at the Nieves Latin Dance Studio in Williamsburg, NY. “Our goal is to create a fun and friendly environment for students who
want to learn to dance salsa,” says Wil. The Nieves Latin Dance Company was created
under Wil’s direction and offers Salsa Classes at the most affordable rate in New York
City. Today Wil is performing with Migdalia Santiago.
BombaYo ignites the ancestral rhythms and dance of Afro Puerto Rican Bomba. The
synergy of drumming, call and response singing and dance, provide the foundation for
a dynamic interplay between the primo drummer and solo dancer. BombaYo stirs the
soul in a way that only music and dance can to uplift and celebrate our deeper humanity. In the spirit of Sankofa, BombaYo members draw from the bomba tradition to enrich
their lives, embrace their cultural legacy, and share these gifts with people of all ages
and abilities. BombaYo is the recipient of the 2011 Union Square Arts Award, has collaborated with William Cepeda and Corbin Blue on Revolution Latina’s CD “Dare to go
Beyond” and has performed with Dan Zanes, Choco Orta and Ozomatli.
The Flippants: Bassist Pedro Marquez were founding student members of El Puente’s
garage rock performance based band class called Cuerdas and have participated in
numerous Intergrated Arts Projects. Ruthy Colmenero is originally from Corpus Christi Texas. Corpus Cristi is home to various pioneering 50s and 60s garage rock groups
such as Sam the Sam and The Pharoahs. Garage Rock flows through her veins and she
can Woolly Boolly all night long! Carlos Rosello grew up in Los Sures Brooklyn and was
a member of Punk Rock underground sensations The Krays. Carlos is also a facilitator
at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice and along with his students co-founded

The Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra is a stunning 11-piece band which forgoes the standard
repertoire of vintage salsa covers and sound-alike originals, instead playing dynamic,
dura arrangements of indie rock tunes we love. This is innovative, astonishing salsa
with a new, vibrant aesthetic. The WSO is currently in the studio completing their second album for release in late-2013.

YOWALKA: Oriunda de la Republica Dominicana, Yowalka, llamada cordialmente Yogi,

La Compañía de Baile de El Puente es una compañía residente en El Puente de Liderato
de Williamsburg. Nuestros jóvenes son empoderados para usar la danza como una

Hecho en Brooklyn es un proyecto musical con raíces Dominicanas y muy influenciadas
por el Rock. Las canciones varían de melodías suaves, hasta agresivas y poco punk en
actitud. La música de Hecho en Brooklyn es música moderna sin un formato regular, abierta en interpretación pero sobretodo es música de fiesta.
Irka Mateo es una cantante, compositora y folclorista que ha recibido numerosos premios y reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera. Es conocida por utilizar el Folclore Dominicano para crear su trabajo original en el género Latin / World music.Ha tenido una
larga y exitosa carrera internacional participando en importantes festivales de música
e instituciones como: la sede de la ONU, el Festival de Jazz de Montreal, Festival del
Caribe Veracruz en México, el Festival del Fuego en Santiago de Cuba, para nombrar
algunos. La World Music - Europa listó su CD Anacaona como uno de los mejores álbumes de música del mundo de 2010. Irka vive en Brooklyn y actualmente está trabajando en su nuevo CD producido por el ganador de Grammy Danny Blume.

Cubanos e internacionales, incluyendo Roberto Fonseca, the Roots y Common. Mien-
tras el aniversario 20 de Hip Hop Cubano se acerca e importantes cambios económicos
y sociales se están realizando en el país, Obsesion está trabajando duro para usar su
música y activismo para crear cambio social positivo. Aparte de hacer música, Obsesion es activo en sus comunidades locales; organizando clases de arte, música y baile,
coordinando talleres sobre racismo y violencia doméstica, y propiciando programas de

Wil Nieves es diplomado en Manejo Empresarial, ha impartido clases profesionalmente
por más de 5 anos. Se ha presentado en muchísimos congresos de salsa, y en eventos
de caridad y en organizaciones sin fines de lucro. Actualmente el ofrece su experiencia y conocimiento de música y cultura Latina con sus estudiantes al Estudio Nieves de
Danza Latina en Williamsburg. La meta es crear un ambiente amistoso y divertido para
los estudiantes que quieran aprender a bailar salsa. Dice Wil: “Esta compañía fue creada
bajo su dirección, y ofrece clases de salsa a los precios más razonables de la ciudad de
Nueva York.”
Bomba Yo, enciende con los ritmos ancestrales de la danza Afro Bomba Puertorriqueña.
La sinergia de los tambores, llamadas y respuestas, canto y baile, provee la fundación
por una dinámica interacción entre el tumbador y el bailarín principal. Bomba Yo levanta el espíritu de una manera única para celebrar profundamente nuestra humanidad.
En el espíritu de Sankofa, los miembros de Bomba Yo extraen de la tradición de Bomba
para enriquecer sus vidas, abrazando su legado cultural, compartiendo estos regalos
con las personas de todas las edades y habilidades. Bomba Yo recibió en 2011 el Union
Square Premio para las Artes. El grupo ha colaborado con William Cepeda y Corbien

La Orquesta de Salsa de Williamsburg es una estupenda banda compuesta de 11 músicos

CADRE (Community Artists’ Development & Resource Exchange) is El Puente’s network
of artists, artisans and cultural workers rooted in North Brooklyn as well as those who
have and continue to collaborate with El Puente over the past three decades. CADRE
members have collectively produced art exhibitions, workshops with visiting artists, the
annual ¡WEPA! Festival for Southside Performing Arts, Integrated Arts Projects, and

Sylvia Hernandez is a renowned quilt artist from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She has exhibited her work nationally in museums and quilt shows, including exhibitions at the Smithsonian, Prospect Park Annual Quilt Exhibit, Brooklyn All-Star Quilt Show, Epiphany
Church Centennial, and many others. One of her quilts, “American Dream” is featured
inThe Journey of Hope in America: Quilts Inspired by President Barack Obama book
and exhibit. Sylvia is a member of the Quilter’s Guild of Brooklyn, American Quilters Society, Las Comadres Org, Art by Latina Artist, El Puente Community Art Development
and Resource Exchange (CADRE). Sylvia grew up on the Southside, attending Epiphany
Church, PS 16 and IS 71, and later when to the High School of Art & Design.
Ana O’Keefe is a Teaching Artist born in Albany, New York and raised between two cultural worlds of mainstream America and traditional Guatemala. She is inspired by the
mission and dedication of El Puente and the artistic community, and currently lives and
works in Williamsburg’s Southside. Her art combines Central American artistic traditions, cultural iconography, and merchant artesania with her own contemporary interpretations of our multicultural city life.
Julia Comita is an American photographer, based out of Brooklyn, New York. She has
worked diligently over the last seven years to perfect her craft, first shooting film and
now working in a digital medium. Since moving to New York City just a few years ago,
she has shot for Twisted Lamb, Idoll Magazine, and Zink Magazine among others. Her
studies began in San Francisco, where she graduated from the Academy of Art University before going off to work and intern in the big Apple where her eye was sculpted by
the photo editors at Vogue and the staff at Steven Klein Studio. Currently she is freelancing as a fashion and art photography. Julia is also contributing to the current exhibition, Renacimiento, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (334 S. 5th Street).
Joe Matunis is a community artist, muralist and educator who has lived and worked in
Los Sures since 1990. He is the founder and director of Los Muralistas de El Puente and
a co-founder of El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. He is currently working with
the NYC Dept. of Transportation on a school-based program to encourage and prepare
students to ride their bikes to school.
Zuelay Rodriguez is an artist from Brooklyn whose work is imaginative, fantastical and
“cartoony.” Her work includes drawing, painting, and jewelry, multimedia and graphic
design. In 2010, Zuelay completed an apprenticeship in the Bead Project at the Urban
Glass Workshop. She has taken classes with and taught visual art at El Puente, where
she has been a member of Los Muralistas since 2007.
ARTISTS
Rolando Almonte, a painter native from the Dominican Republic, resident of the Williamsburg, Brooklyn Community. He has presented his work in various cities in the
U.S.A., and in his country of origin. He studied at the autonomous Santo Domingo University and at the School of Fine Arts.
Clara Waloff is a community-based artist whose work focuses on education and human development - both art forms in of themselves! Clara collaborates with artists,
young and old, in a variety of media, including murals, puppets, masks, printmaking,
bookmaking, quilting, and photography. She has worked throughout NYC, across the
United States, and in Latin America; but her home base since 2005 is at El Puente,
where she is a member of an impressive team of art educators.
Alex Marin is a Brooklyn-based visual and multi-media artist, specializing in drawing,
painting, graphic design, aerosol art, photography and film. He has taken classes with
and taught visual art at Art Start and El Puente. He is influenced by his travels and experiences in New York and Ecuador, and will be painting live at ¡WEPA! Fest.

SOBRE CADRE
CADRE (Community Artists’ Development & Resource Exchange) de El Puente es una
red de artistas, artesanos y trabajadores de la cultura arraigada en el norte de Brooklyn

ARTISTAS Ana O’Keefe es una artista que se dedica a la enseñanza, nacida en Albany, Nueva York.
Creció entre dos culturas Norte América y Guatemala. Ella se inspira en la misión y
la dedicación de El Puente y de la comunidad artística. Ella vive en los Sures de Williamsburg. Su expresión artística combina tradiciones artísticas de Centro América,
iconografía cultural y artesanía con su propia interpretación contemporánea de nuestra
vida multicultural citadina.
Joe Matunis es un artista de la comunidad, muralista y educador que ha vivido en Los
Sures desde 1990. El es fundador y director de Los Muralistas de El Puente y co fundador de La Academia por La Paz y la Justica de El Puente. En este momento está
trabajando con El Departamento de Transporte de la ciudad de Nueva York con un programa basado en las escuelas para alentar y preparar a los estudiantes montar bicicleta para ir a la escuela.
Rolando Almonte: Pintor Artístico oriundo de la República Dominicana y residente en
la comunidad de Williamsburg Brooklyn, New York, expositor de sus obras en diferentes ciudades de los Estados Unidos y en su tierra natal. Egresado de la Universidad
Autónoma y de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Arte de Santo Domingo.
Clara Waloff: Es una artista de la comunidad cuyo trabajo se enfoca en la educación y el
desarrollo de ser humano – Ambas formas artísticas en sí mismas.- Clara colabora con
artistas, jóvenes y de edad madura, en una variedad de medios de arte, que incluye murales, títeres, mascaras, grabados, empastado de libros, edredones y fotografía. Clara
ha trabajado a través de la ciudad de Nueva York y los Estados Unidos y Latino América. Desde 2005 su base ha sido El Puente, donde ella es miembro activo de un equipo
espectacular de artistas educadores y miembro de CADRE.
Alex Marin es un artista visual multimedia, especializándose en dibujo, pintura, diseño
grafico, arte de aerosol, fotografía y cine. El ha tomado clases y al mismo tiempo
ensenado en Art Start y a El Puente. Alex ha sido influenciado por sus viajes y experiencias en Nueva York y Ecuador. El estará pintado en vivo en el Festival WEPA.
Silvya Hernandez es una reconocida artista de edredones de Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Ha
exhibido su trabajo a nivel nacional en museos y exposiciones de edredones. Su trabajo
se ha visto en la exhibición anual de Edredones del Smithsonian, Prospect Park, Brooklyn All-Star Quilt Show, la Iglesia Church Centennial y muchos otros sitios. Uno de sus
edredones está representado en The Journey of Hope in America: (El Camino de la
Esperanza en América.) Edredones inspirados por los libros y exhibiciones del Presidente Barack Obama Silvia es miembro de la Asociación de Edredones de Brooklyn,
La Asociacion Americana de Edredones, Las Comadres org, Arte de Artistas Latinas y
El Puente CADRE. Sylvia creció en los Sures y fue a la Iglesia Epiphany, PS 16 y IS 71, y
luego fue a la Escuela Secundaria de Arte y Diseño. Julia Comita es una fotógrafa Norteamericana de Brooklyn, Nueva York. Con mucha
diligencia ella ha trabajado por los últimos siete años para perfeccionar su arte. Primero realizando una película y ahora trabajando en un medio digital. Desde su llegada a
la ciudad de Nueva York solamente hace pocos años ella ha fotografiado para Twisted
Lamb, .la revista Idoll y la revista Zink entre otros. Ella inicio sus estudios en San Francisco donde se graduó de la Academia de Arte, antes de ir a trabajar y realizar un internado en la gran Manzana donde sus ojos fueron esculpidos por los editores de Vogue
y el personal del Estudio Klein. Actualmente ella trabaja por cuenta propia como fotógrafa de de moda y fotografía artística. Julia también está contribuyendo a la actual
exposición, Renacimiento, en la Iglesia Luterana de San Paul.
Zuelay Rodriguez es una artista de Brooklyn cuyo trabajo es imaginativo, fantástico y de
“dibujos animados”. Zuelay ha completado su aprendizaje en el Bead Project y el taller
Urban Glass. Ella ha tomado clase y ensenado arte visual en El Puente donde ha sido
miembro de Los Muralistas desde 2007.

The El Puente Green Light District is a strategic ten-year initiative to sustain, grow,
green, and celebrate Williamsburg’s Southside community! At a time when communities across New York City are facing rapid changes that threaten to destabilize our
neighborhoods, the Green Light District seeks to flip the disempowerment of gentrification and put the power of transformation in the hands of its residents and stakeholders. ABOUT EL PUENTE:
El Puente is a community human rights institution that promotes leadership for peace
and justice through the engagement of members (youth and adult) in the arts, education, scientific research, wellness and environmental action. Founded in 1982 by Luis
Garden Acosta, El Puente currently integrates the diverse activities and community
campaigns of its Center for Arts and Culture and its Green Light District & Community
Wellness Program within its four neighborhood Leadership Centers, and its nationally
recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn and beyond, El Puente remains at the forefront of community/
youth learning and development issues and as such, initiates and impacts social policy
both locally and nationally.

Southside Merchants is an organization creating a strong partnership between local
