Fourth Grade News
Happy December parents we hope that your
Thanksgiving Break was safe and restful. We
st
completed our 1 trimester of the school year. At
our conferences, we will be sharing with you all
the areas your students have been improving and
excelling in, as well as areas they can strengthen.
Check your times and dates and please be on
time.
Social Science and Science
California Native Tribes was the topic we learned
about in November. Ask your child about the
many fascinating aspects of Native life they were
experts in such as landforms, climate,
plants/animals as natural resources, Tribal Life,
and interesting facts. In science they learned
about symbiotic relationships and how organisms
benefit through them or not. We’re sure you’d
love to hear your student sing our class
“Longitude Latitude Song” as well. We encourage
you to sit with your child and look at a world map
and have your child show you the names of the
various oceans, continents, equator, and prime
meridian.
Reading and Writing
As always, the best way to bond with your child
as well as improve their reading skills is to read
with them, whether they read to you or you read
to them. Make sure to discuss the books and
have your student retell important facts to you.
Reading also improves writing skills because they
are exposed to correct grade level sentence
structure and vocabulary that they can use in
their writing. The more words they know the
stronger their writing becomes. This next
trimester we will be teaching on how to write
informational writing. Students will be required to
use evidence from texts to support their work.
You can practice at home by asking your student
comprehension questions after reading. Then,
have them show you in the book evidence to
support their answers.
Fundraiser for Fieldtrip
Parents we will be having our first fundraiser on

December 12 to help raise $1,569 in order to go
on our fieldtrip to Mission San Juan Capistrano.
We will be handing out more information
regarding the fundraiser at our parent/teacher
conferences.
Fifth Grade News
We have been concluding
many units as we concluded
the trimester.
Social Studies
Having learned about the early
exploration of the New World,
we turn our attention to what
life was like as a settler in a
new land and how the
European newcomers
cooperated and conflicted with
the Native Americans.
Science
After spending the entire first
trimester exploring the
relationship between the Sun,
the Moon, and Earth we are
now ready to investigate the
importance of water to all parts
of the Earth. We will focus our
studies around the current
drought facing our area.
Language Arts
Both classes have greatly
enjoyed studying poetry over
the past two weeks. Students
have explored different kinds
of poems and deepened their
appreciation for the wide
variety of possibilities for what
a poem can be. They have
written their own compositions
and have (or will soon have)
memorized a poem to recite.
Math
We will soon have completed
our first major unit of the year,
decimals and place value. We
will continue to challenge
students’ number sense as we
delve into fractions.

Lectura y Escritura
¡Feliz diciembre a todos! Esperamos que
sus vacaciones de Thanksgiving fueran
sanas y reposadas. Acabamos el 1º
trimestre del año. En las conferencias,
vamos a compartir como sus hijos están
mejorando y teniendo éxito además como
pueden mejorar. Chequeen sus citas y
favor de llegar a tiempo.
Estudios Sociales y Ciencias
Los indígenas de California fueron la tema
de noviembre. Pregunten su hijo sobre los
hechos de la vida nativa que aprendieron,
como formas de tierra, clima, animales y
plantas como recursos naturales, y hechos
interesantes. En las ciencias aprendieron
sobre las relaciones simbióticas. Les
gustará oír la “Latitude and Longitude Song”
de su hijo. Además, discuten el mapa del
mundo con su hijo – los océanos,
continentes, ecuador, y el primer meridiano.
Como siempre, leer juntos es una buena
manera de unir con su hijo además a

Tendremos la 1ª recaudación de fondos el

Noticias del quinto grado
Hemos estado concluyendo
muchas unidades como se
concluyó el trimestre.
Estudios Sociales - Después
de haber aprendido acerca de
la exploración del Nuevo
Mundo, dirigimos nuestra
atención a lo que era la vida de
un colono en una tierra nueva y
cómo los recién llegados de
Europa cooperaron y entraba
en conflicto con los nativos
americanos.
Ciencia - Después de pasar
todo el primer trimestre
explorando la relación entre el
Sol, la Luna, la Tierra, ahora
estamos listos para investigar la
importancia del agua para
todas las partes de la Tierra .
Nos centraremos nuestros
estudios en torno a la actual
sequía que enfrenta nuestra
área.
Lengua y Literatura - Ambas
clases han disfrutado
enormemente el estudio de la
poesía en las últimas dos
semanas. Los estudiantes han
explorado diferentes tipos de
poemas y han profundizado su
reconocimiento por la amplia
variedad de posibilidades de lo
que un poema puede ser. Ellos
han escrito sus propias
composiciones y tienen ( o
tendrán pronto ) memorizado
un poema para recitar .
Matemáticas - Nos pronto
habrá terminado nuestra
primera unidad principal del
año, decimales y lugar de valor.
Vamos a seguir para desafiar el
sentido numérico de los
estudiantes mientras
exploramos fracciones.
