In 1995, Bishop Vera was named Coadjutor Bishop of Chiapas, serving with Don Samuel Ruiz
Garcia. According to Bishop Vera, his work with the poor indigenous communities in Chiapas
became, for him, a conversion experience. He worked alongside
Bishop Ruiz in the peace and reconciliation process in Chiapas and
has since become an outspoken advocate of the poor and
dispossessed in Mexico.
In 1999, Bishop Vera was named Bishop of Saltillo, Coahuila, in
northern Mexico. There he created and presides over the Diocesan
Center for Human Rights Fray Juan de Larios, which works with
vulnerable groups, including migrants, indigenous, women, and sex
workers. Under his leadership, the Diocese founded a shelter for migrants, the Belen Posada
del Migrante. Bishop Vera has been particularly active in the struggle for justice by the families
of 65 coal miners killed in the Pasta de Conchos mine in Coahuila in 2006. Bishop Vera is also
the head of the Mexican Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Immigration.

and the University of Chicago's Human Rights Program and Center for Latin American Studies.

At 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 21, Bishop Vera will speak at the University of Chicago Social Sciences Research
building (1126 East 59th Street, Chicago). Admission is free. Bishop Vera's visit to Chicago is supported by the
University of Chicago's Human Rights Program, Center for Latin American Studies, Friedrich Katz Center for Mexican

En 1995, el Monseñor Vera fue nombrado Obispo coadjutor de Chiapas, sirviendo con Don
Samuel Ruiz. Según Mons. Vera, su trabajo con las comunidades indígenas en Chiapas
cambió su vida. El servía al lado de Mons. Ruiz en el proceso por
la paz y reconciliación en Chiapas y desde ese entonces ha sido
una voz abogando por los pobres y marginados en México.
En 1999, Mons. Vera fue nombrado Obispo de Saltillo, Coahuila,
México, donde creó y ahora preside sobre el Centro Diocesano de
Derechos Humanos Fray Juan de Larios, que trabaja con grupos
que sufren injusticias, como inmigrantes, indígenas, y mujeres. Bajo
su liderazgo, su diócesis fundó un albergue para inmigrantes, la
Posada Belén del Migrante. El Obispo Vera está muy activo en la lucha por la justicia para las
familias de los 65 mineros que murieron en la mina, Pasta de Conchos en 2006. También él es
el presidente del Comité de Migración para la Conferencia Episcopal de México.
