The festive lights and seasonal carols are inescapable reminders that the holidays are here. Of
course, there are also the non-stop
media blitzes with a singular message of buy, buy, buy. It is hard to
hide from the holidays. But for a
growing number of Coloradans, it
may be the holidays that are hiding
from them.
Every day across the metro
Denver area, more than 11,000
people, including a growing number of children, wake up not knowing where they will sleep that night;
they’re homeless. According to the
Metro Denver Homeless Institute,
Denver area homeless now outnumber the combined populations
of the resort ski towns of Vail and
Aspen.
No longer are the homeless

Bennet visa bill
Colorado U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet introduced a bill to
reform the visa system to drive economic growth, inspire
entrepreneurship and create jobs right here at home.
The Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) Visa Act of 2011 would create a new
category of visas for students graduating with advanced
degrees in specialties in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM). To fill Colorado’s increasing
number of STEM-related jobs by keeping graduates of
American universities working in the United States and
by encouraging American students to study STEM fields.
In 2009, between one-half and two-thirds of all Ph.Ds
awarded by U.S. universities in physics, economics, computer science, chemicals and other highly technical fields
were earned by international students. The United States
loses many of these individuals – some of the world’s
brightest – due to inflexible and outdated immigration
policies that are not meeting the needs of our economy.
Judicial Branch seeks students’
ideas
The Colorado Judicial Department is soliciting ideas
from middle-school students around Colorado for justicerelated words, phrases, names and dates to be incorporated
into a piece of art that will be prominently displayed in the
Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center when it opens in 2013.
The words and phrases will be cut into bands of mirrorpolished steel that will form a 50-foot abstract tower shape
in the building’s Monumental Staircase. That staircase
sits next to the rotunda, which will house entrances to the
Colorado Supreme Court and Colorado Court of Appeals
courtrooms, and where visitors can look through a four-story
glass wall toward the Capitol.
Words and phrases may be submitted to the Judicial
Department via e-mail to [email protected].
Make sure the term “Sayre project” is in the subject line.
Submissions will be accepted through Jan. 6, 2012.
Free dental care on Christmas Eve
Comfort Dental will be hosting Care Day Saturday, Dec.
24, offering free dental care to those in need. Offices will be

to dental care. On Care Day, all services are free to anyone. Patients are helped on a first-come, first-served basis,
receiving a variety of basic dental care from cleanings to
extractions. More serious dental problems are handled on
a case-by-base basis and at the discretion of the individual
dentist. Nationally, approximately 250 Comfort Dental dentists and 1,300 staff members donate their time on Care Day.

enjoyed at the DIA Holiday Extravaganza.

For the tenth consecutive year, Denver International
Airport’s airlines, concessionaires, contractors and employees hosted a holiday party at DIA for 50 children who currently are in foster care on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Kim Day, Denver Human Services Manager Penny May and
Councilman Chris Herndon also joined the celebration interacting with foster youth, foster families and volunteers from
the airport community.
The Tenth Annual DIA Holiday Extravaganza began
with a sleigh ride to Denver International Airport (DIA) via
DIA buses. Once at the DIA 45-minute Waiting Area, airport
fire trucks with flashing lights escorted the entourage to
Jeppesen Terminal. Upon arrival, firefighters treated foster
youth to a fire truck tour. From there, airport volunteers
guided foster youth and their families to a winter wonderland filled with games and activities. While kids enjoyed
munching on lunch, Santa made a surprise appearance and
later listened to the wishes of each boy and girl. At the end
of the event children received a large bag of gifts.

More than 1,500 individuals and families were welcomed
to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for a prayer
service featuring a festival of Advent Music and Hymns, followed by the annual distribution of a crisp new $20 bill to each
individual (children receive McDonald’s gift certificates) on
Friday, Dec. 16. The gifts are provided by an anonymous donor.
The Father Woody Christmas Party took place on
Sunday, Dec. 18 at the downtown Sheraton Hotel. More than
3,500 homeless and near-homeless individuals and families
were welcomed as honored guests and served a delicious
meal and provided with new Christmas presents.

This year more than 80 participants with memory loss or
physical impairment and guests came to the Johnson Adult Day
Program (JADP) holiday party on Dec. 14 – including Santa.

A group of community and civic leaders representing
broad interests from across Colorado will meet in the coming weeks to evaluate the possibility of Denver submitting
a bid to the U.S. Olympic Committee to host an Olympic
Winter Games.
The Denver Exploratory Committee will identify the
opportunities and challenges of a bid based on facts gathered by many others who have worked on this issue over
a long period. The committee will examine the financial
issues, the feasibility and the economic impact of a potential bid and answer questions about such things as protocol, timing, venue requirements and process. Committee
members will then present their findings to Gov. John
Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock.
Any decision to submit a bid for the 2022 Games
will be based in part on outcomes from the Denver
Exploratory Committee process and any outcomes relating
to the International Olympic Committee and U.S. Olympic
Committee decision-making processes.

as they each enjoyed a personal visit with Santa. The JADP
team serenaded guests with a performance of “We Wish
You a Merry Christmas” and each participant went home
with a special holiday gift. For people with dementia and
Alzheimer’s this was their opportunity to create new and
wonderful holiday memories.
JADP is Colorado’s oldest adult day care programs
for people with memory loss or physical impairment. The
20-year-old social and medical model program for quality
adult care at JADP focuses on the individual needs of your
loved one, striving to maintain and improve the quality of
their lives, while offering respite to families and caregivers.

Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ
When relatives
or friends have birthdays, there are usually presents involved,

birthday
cards and even
birthday parties. The
presents acknowledge the closeness of
the relationship with
our loved ones, the

parties are more for the benefit of friends and
family than the person celebrated.
Once in a while there are genuine
exceptions and we go all out for someone
that really reflects the very love that we
reserve only for ourselves. Among our favorite candidates are our children as they bring

the blessing that this act of celebration can
bring to family and friends.
As long as they remain children, the
value attached to the celebration remains
a constant. However, the children will soon
leave us and be replaced by adults with their
own children and we transfer the value of

de esta confusión ha sido que la celebración
del nacimiento de Cristo se ha convertido en
la ocasión de darse regalos entro los miembros del mundo cristiano y menos acerca de
la fiesta de cumpleaños para el todopoderoso.

Salvador del mundo. Al hacerlo, nosotros
también celebramos el hecho de que

In early December it was announced
that progressive radio talk show host Mario
Solis-Marich’s syndicated show would no
longer be carried in the Denver market.
Solis-Marich informed his listeners in
his Facebook page saying: “Was just told by
Clear Channel that as of today I am being
replaced by a syndicated program in Denver.
More later.” When La Voz reached out to
Solis-Marich for a comment he said he
could not make a statement at the moment.
His show, which addressed issues that
catered to Colorado listeners, was broadcast
from Los Angeles.
Clear Channel, AM 760’s parent company, is facing a firestorm by loyal listeners
after it was announced that syndicated
radio talk show host Norman Goldman
would replace Solis-Marich’s radio program.
Among those who’ve expressed their
anger about the show’s cancellation is the
Denver Latino community. The Colorado
Latino Forum releases a statement expressing concern, disappointment and demanding
the show’s reinstatement. “On December 1,
2011, Clear Channel cancelled the awardwinning Mario Solis-Marich Show much to
the distress of the national Latino community,” said Olivia Mendoza, CLF executive
director.
“The Show has been a stalwart supporter of the Colorado Latino Forum and other
Latino organizations throughout Colorado,”
said Gene Lucero, CLF co-chair. “The reinstatement of the Mario Solis-Marich Show
is critical for the well-being of the growing
Colorado Latino community, which is more
than 20 percent of Colorado’s population,”
he said.
“The cancellation of the Mario SolisMarich Show demonstrates Clear Channel’s
complete lack of sensitivity to the Latino
community in spite of its growing population,” said former Colorado State Senator
and CLF Co-Chair Polly Baca. “We are gravely concerned about the lack of Latinos in the
senior management and program administration of Clear Channel, as well as the lack
of management diversity generally.”

in northern New Mexico in the ‘60s.
The season was all about religion, festivities, gifts, great food and of course family.
Back to a time when it was perfectly normal
to mix religion with public schools, back
when everyone in your town attended the
same church service on Christmas Eve and
walked away with the feeling of joy and peace.
It was a time of rehearsing for the Christmas
school play that involved the nativity scene.
It was a time to rehearse Christmas carols
in both English and Spanish indicative of a
total bilingual student body.
A time to dig your way out of several foot-high snowdrifts that the weather
of yesteryear brought — a time of quiet
solitude as the clear New Mexico skies, free
of pollution, exposed a magical jet-black
sky with endless sparking diamonds on la

father participated in this venture by chauffeuring my mother, I recall a visit to the
single man or widower whom mom delivered
tortillas to because his wife had passed away
last year and he was now “a lonely man.” A
visit to the couple with too many children
meant a box of canned goods and used
clothing for their growing children. These
deliveries brought smiles to many.
The items delivered changed over the
years, sometimes it was roasted piñon, firewood, cherry chocolates, hard candy and
peanuts, but the routine and message was
the same — someone needs us during the
most beautiful time of the year.
As a child I often wondered why my parents did this. I often asked my mom why we
had to make these rounds during the coldest
month of the year when we could be in the
comfort of our own home. She replied, “People
are lonely, ill, poor and need others. When you
give to someone it is returned to you in tenfold.”
Little did I know then that it was a lesson in the true meaning of the season.

la religión, las fiestas, buena comida y por
supuesto la familia. Regresando al tiempo
en donde era perfectamente normal mezclar
la religión con las escuelas públicas, cuando
todos en el pueblo iban al mismo servicio
religioso en la noche buena y salía con un
sentimiento de alegría y paz. Era el momento
de ensayar para la obra de teatro de Navidad
en la escuela y que incluía la escena de la
natividad. Era el momento de ensayar los
villancicos en inglés y en español lo cual indicaba un cuerpo estudiantil bilingüe.
Era el momento de abrirse paso en
cúmulos de nieve de varios pies de altos
que trajo el día de ayer — un momento de
soledad tranquila mientras el cielo claro de
Nuevo México, libre de la contaminación,
mostraba un cielo mágico y negro con un
sin fin de diamantes que brillaban durante
la Nochebuena. Era el tiempo en el cual
una sola tira de luces de navidad (bombillos
grandes) en la puerta o ventana de alguien
traía familiaridad a su existencia.
El nuestro no era un pequeño pueblo
típico de los EE.UU. Nuestra pequeña comunidad no era rica o ni siquiera de América
en general y sin embargo no era verdaderamente pobre. No teníamos gente desa-
mparada. Todos tenían un techo sobre sus
cabezas, comida y ropa. Mirando atrás, los
tiempos eran duros para muchos, y me acuerdo de visitar a ancianos de mi comunidad
mientras mi madre entregaba un pastel de
calabaza o de manzana por que de acuerdo a
ella ellos no podían cocinar para sí mismos.
Mientras mi padre participaba en esta aventura haciendo de chofer para mi madre, me
acuerdo de una visita a un hombre soltero
o viudo a quienes mamá les llevaba tortillas
porque su esposa había muerto el año pasado y el ahora era un “hombre solitario”. Una
visita a una pareja con demasiados hijos
significaba una caja de comida enlatada y
ropa usada para sus hijos mayores. Estas
entregas traían sonrisas a muchos de ellos.
Los productos entregados cambiaban
con los años, algunas veces eran piñones
tostados, madera, chocolates de cereza, dulces duros y cacahuates, pero la rutina y
el mensaje eran el mismo — alguien nos
necesita en el tiempo más hermoso del año.

padres hacían esto. Con frecuencia le preguntaba a mi mamá por qué teníamos que
dar esas vueltas en los meses más fríos

ety, the demographics have changed. In a single generation, the
face of the homeless tumbleweed male has been transformed
to one encompassing women, the young, old, black, white,
Hispanic and veterans, too. Diversity has found a home on the
streets — under the bridges, too. And many, perhaps even most,
are adrift in the same communities they once called home.
“About 62 percent of the area’s homeless include families with children,” says the Denver Rescue Mission’s Alexxa
Gagner. Many on the streets are the unemployed, underemployed, evicted or foreclosed. Or, they’re people like 34-yearold single-mother, ‘Lisa.’
The mother of four — three of whom remain with her —
is trying to repair pieces of a life recklessly, violently broken
by years of drug and domestic abuse. She calls many of the
choices she’s made unexplainably foolish. But despite her
situation, she also feels fortunate and imbued with a new
confidence on the eve of her first holiday season where she
is actually free of drugs and the domestic violence that were
daily parts of her life.
“At first I was scared,” she said. “I was leaving everything
behind.” But after weighing exactly what it was that she was
leaving — an all-too-predictable cycle of meth pipes and
pot highs — and a steady dose
of domestic abuse, chaos and
the unintended consequences
of bad choices, anything “had
to be better.”
Now clean for two months,
she’s living at DRM’s “The
Crossings” facility in Stapleton.
“I’m doing good,” she says of
her new life. “My children are a
lot happier. They’re now able to
sleep through the night.”
Her life now has order, a
far cry from the one filled with
unpredictable bursts of violence
brought on by simple misunderstandings or a crazed spouse’s
drug-addled perceptions.
“Now that I’m straight,”
she said, “I see all the hurt I put
on my kids. I’ve also apologized
and plan to move forward.”
DRM’s The Crossings is a
port in the storm for ‘Lisa’ and
about 80 others who’ve found
themselves picking up the pieces of life’s misfortune. “We’re a
hand up, not a hand out,” Gagner said of the 80 individuals
and families who’ve come to count on The Crossings.
Those who’ve been selected for temporary residency
must have a source of income. “They do pay rent … we hold
them accountable,” Gagner said. The Crossings residents

For ‘Lisa,’ that’s been the easy part. She’s welcomed
a return to the spiritual moorings that disintegrated when
being high became her norm. In the drug phase of her life,
“I thought it was my job” to make poor decisions. “I didn’t
have common sense.”
Today she works at a job she chooses not to name for
the sake of her employer’s privacy. And she has met all

Her story is not unusual. DRM’s The Crossings has
been a lifeline for people like ‘Lisa’ for the past six years.
And while it’s understandable that the holidays are when
light gets shined on tragic and personal stories like ‘Lisa’s,’
Gagner says bad luck and bad choices create lines at DRM
every day of the year.
They are just two things that give life to DRM’s mission
of helping those in need, Gagner said. No one, she says, takes
great joy in standing in line in sub-freezing temperatures at
DRM, holidays notwithstanding. But few are turned away.
