on behalf of Concern America, an international development organization
based out of Orange County. Concern America trains people to provide
health care services, clean water systems, etc. in impoverished communities

Why are we celebrating this on September 20th?
September 20th is Catechetical Sunday, the day when all of our
catechists (Faith Formation teachers) will be commissioned and receive
a blessing for their work during in Religious Education for the new
school year. The catechists will be receiving the blessing during the
9:30 a.m. Spanish Mass and the 11 a.m. English Mass. We all who
teach and share their faith to our students, and we especially thank Mary
for her years of commitment and service to our parish.

'Tis the Gift to be Simple
The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey
from innocence to innocence with characteristic
brevity:
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free.
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be.
This journey is easier sung about than done. It
takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power
are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus
says and demonstrates in today's Gospel that members of God's kingdom must hold in their embrace
the most inconsequential of persons, for that person
is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to
the intuition of the world of Jesus' time, as it does in
ours.
The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the
shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and
burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough

St. Justin Martyr is forming an English Children's Choir.
The first day of practice and sign-up is Monday, September 28,
from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the St. Justin Martyr School Music Room (upstairs).
Children from 3rd to 8th grade are welcome.
Children will be singing the 4th Sunday of every month at the 12:30 p.m. Mass.

Gift cards needed
The St. Justin Cenacle is a group of
volunteers who prepares and serves hot
meals here every Sunday throughout the
year. Cenacle is collecting gift cards now
so we will have enough to give to the needy
during Christmas time. A card of any
amount from a grocery store, dollar store, or
fast food would be greatly appreciated. Last
year we gave 70 gift bags filled with a small
shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush,
toothpaste, nutrition bar, fruit, water, pudding, and a gift card.. Please deliver your
cards to the Parish Office or put them into
the Sunday collection basket in an envelope
marked “CENACLE.”
Cenacle is responsible for feeding the
hungry every Sunday at 2:30 p.m. We average between 45 and 100 people and serve a
hot nutritious meal. We can always use
donations of fresh fruit, nutrition bars homebaked desserts and individual bottled waters. Merry Christmas!

Sacred Heart Mission History, part 6
In recognition of this month’s Mexican Heritage Fiesta, we are running a series of articles outlining
a brief history of our mission church, a part St. Justin Parish.
In 1975 the Mission welcomed its first deacon, Art Hiraga, and his wife
Mary. Not only was he the Mission’s first deacon, he was the first deacon for
the newly established (1976) Diocese of Orange. Deacon Art and Mary were of
Japanese descent, and were married in 1942 while they were confined at the
Manzanar Internment Camp. They put a new emphasis and organization to the
Catechism education program, setting up CCD certification classes in their
home. They set up training programs for pre-baptismal classes, lectors,
quinceañeras, and marriages. Deacon Art was on the Board of Directors for the

Reflexiones sobre la Palabra ¿Quién es el más importante?
Sabiduría 2:12, 17-20 Algunas sociedades antiguas creían que los monarcas eran descendientes o al menos manifestaciones de Dios. en esos casos, el
título “hijo de Dios” sería un apelativo real; pero no parece que se trate de
eso en este pasaje, sino que sea más bien a una alusión más íntima, a una
relación incluso familiar con Dios —una relación única—. Esto molesta a
los malvados, a quienes tal manifestación, y sobre todo, las obras de quien se
dice hijo de Dios, les resulta una acusación a su propia conducta.
Santiago 3:16-4:3 Una de las características más notables de la enseñanza
sapiencial es el contraste entre el camino del malvado y el del justo. El enfoque de esta lectura pasa de la visión de paz que ofrece Dios a la realidad de
conflicto de la mayoría de las comunidades humanas. Tal conflicto es una
indicación de que las personas no han sido capaces de caminar por las sendas de Dios.
Marcos 9:30-37 Jesús se identifica aquí con el Hijo de Dios que ha de venir
en las nubes anunciando el final de una era y el comienzo de otra, pero antes,
tendrá que ser entregado, traicionado y sufrir. Los discípulos no lo entienden. es lógico porque, por un lado, Jesús se identifica con el Mesías, que
ellos esperaban que viniera triunfante. La idea de alguien que, siendo de
condición divina, se vacía a sí mismo y toma la condición de esclavo o de
niño totalmente dependiente, no se les hace adecuado; y Jesús va más allá:
en una sociedad en la que los niños estaban en lo más bajo de la escala social, Él dice que los más pequeños son los favoritos de Dios.
Nuestra cultura: Nuestros niños son muy importantes para nosotros. Los
amamos y los protegemos y consideraríamos la vida incompleta si no hubiera niños. A veces, en las culturas inmigrantes, en el afán por darles a los
hijos lo que nosotros no tuvimos, podríamos consentirlos demasiado y no
ayudar a su verdadero desarrollo como personas maduras; o bien podríamos
estar exigiéndoles demasiado o imponiendo sobre ellos nuestros propios
sueños de triunfo.
Reflexiones para la Homilía
Los niños a menudo quieren ser el número uno, los mejores. Pelean
entre ellos por quién es el más importante, a quién quiere más la abuelita,
quién tiene más cosas… Algunas veces los podemos mirar con indulgencia,
pensando que sólo son niños y que actúan como niños, quizá sin darnos cuenta de que los adultos hacen prácticamente lo mismo en muchas ocasiones.
La competitividad es un rasgo muy característico de la sociedad, no sólo
en deportes, sino en el propio trabajo e incluso entre nuestras amistades. Muchas veces los medios de comunicación nos animan, con anuncios en los que
se nos invita a ser igual o más que los vecinos, a tener tanto como ellos. Por
otra parte, se considera importantes a personas que tienen éxito, fama, dinero
o estudios de nivel muy alto. Así también andaban los discípulos de Jesús,
discutiendo sobre quién sería el más importante.
Jesús hoy trastoca todo eso y le da la vuelta al sentido de valores que
pueda tener el mundo. Les responde a sus amigos que precisamente el mayor
de todos, el Hijo de Dios, tendrá que sufrir y vaciarse de todo; y que el reino
pertenece a los más pequeños, a los últimos.
Seguramente no era lo que querían oír, tan empeñados como estaban en
ser los mejores, los primeros, pero este es el mensaje: quien quiera ser el
primero, tendrá que ser el servidor de todos. “Poder es servir, porque Dios es
amor”, cantamos a veces en la misa. el resultado de una comunidad sin competición, una comunidad o una familia en la que las personas tratan de servirse unas a otras, será una comunidad llena de paz, sin violencias y sin tanto
conflicto.
Para la reflexión: ¿En qué momentos de mi vida me siento en la tensión de
competir con otros por atención, puestos o privilegios? ¿Qué cosas producen
más conflicto y tensión en nuestra comunidad? ¿Somos capaces de ceder y
servir sin esperar la fama, el privilegio o el control? ¿Cómo podemos introducir en nuestra comunidad una oportunidad para que sus miembros reflexionen acerca de las tensiones y los conflictos? ¿Hay alguien en mi familia
o comunidad que necesita de mi atención para resolver sus conflictos? ¿Qué
puedo hacer por ellos?

Los abuelos, un tesoro en la familia

Esta generación de personas mayores se forjó en los años duros
donde todavía no había aparecido la llamada sociedad del bienestar.
No tuvieron las comodidades que gozan hoy sus nietos, ni las posibilidades culturales y educativas que tienen sus hijos pues muy pronto conocieron la dureza del trabajo para traer dinero a casa.
Son hombres y mujeres hechos a sí mismos, autodidactas, sacrificados,
capaces de un aguante sobrehumano y de las más heroicas renuncias.
Precisamente son ellos quienes están desempeñando una labor supletoria
en la transmisión de la fe y de los valores que han configurado la institución natural de la familia. Por esto y por otras muchas razones, los abuelos siguen siendo un gran tesoro de humanidad en todas las tradiciones
culturales.
En África se dice que, cuando muere un anciano “ha desaparecido
una biblioteca”. Los mayores allí son los custodios de la memoria colectiva. en cambio, en occidente, nadie quiere parecer viejo y se ha perdido
el respeto a la “vejez venerable”. Es necesario crear una nueva mentalidad respecto de nuestros mayores. En primer lugar, hace falta considerar
al anciano en su dignidad de persona. Luego hay que procurarle una
inserción efectiva en el entramado social. No son un peso para la sociedad, sino una fuente de sabiduría y armonía que puede contribuir al bien
común.
Ellos pueden ser —y son tantas veces— los garantes del afecto y la
ternura que todo ser humano necesita dar y recibir. Ellos dan a los pequeños la perspectiva del tiempo, son memoria y riqueza de las familias.
Ojalá que, bajo ningún concepto, sean excluidos del círculo familiar.
Son un tesoro que no podemos arrebatarles a las nuevas generaciones.

mujeres embarazadas que necesitan ayuda para tener a sus bebes. Estos
centros les proveen lo que ellas necesitan como: asistencia médica, consejería, techo, comida, panales, ropa y las ayudan a salir adelante en la vida.
En todas las Misas Dominicales del 11,18 y 25 de Octubre habrá en el
altar de nuestra Parroquia canastos o cajas grandes con un letrero
“PENNIES FROM HEAVEN”, ahí puedes dejar el biberón con tu donación.

En honor por el día de San Francisco de Asís, acompáñenos el

Traigan a todos sus compañeritos de cuatro patas, a sus amoguitos
peludos y todos sus mascotas que se arrastran, vuelan o nadan para darle
gracias a Dios por toda su creación y compañeros que nos ha dado.
Los niños tienen que ser acompañados por un adulto. Por favor de
