DECEMBER 27, 2015 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH Reflection The Church has appointed this Sunday within the Octave of Christmas as the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Today, we celebrate not only the holy family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, but our own families too. The holy family of Nazareth (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) is presented as a model for all Christian families to follow. Why should this family be imitated, and what made them a holy family? In the first place, they lived united to God. They planted in their family, the seed of righteousness which is the culture of godliness based on the virtues laid down by St Paul in today’s second reading; the virtues of Compassion, Kindness, Lowliness, Meekness, and Patience, forbearing one another and, forgiving each other. Christ grew up in this culture and God was with him. He went about doing good. In Joseph, each father or husband has the duty of patiently and humbly working to provide the necessities of life for his family as he did to Mary and Jesus. You may not always give them all you would wish for them but you do what you can gladly and humbly. You have to be there for them at all times. Even though your name does not make headlines in the newspaper, but your life should make great impact on your family. In Mary, each mother or wife has a perfect example she should strive to follow. She has to be a dutiful, faithful wife, and an ideal and loving mother as Mary was. An ideal wife is always sensitive to the fact that her beloved spouse has to struggle so hard to earn their meager, daily bread. It is always painful when either of the spouses is insensitive to the problems or plight of the other or their children. Mary had her days of sorrows and anxieties seeing her son suffer humiliations and taunts which culminated at the foot of the cross on Calvary. She did not commit suicide or talk ill of God; rather she accepted it all as God’s will for the salvation of the world. In times of sorrows and anxieties, mothers should turn to Mary for courage and help to forge ahead in their hard road of motherhood. Remember, the salvation of your family is in your hand, do your work as a mother or wife. Do not dance to the drum of secularism, rather dance to the tune of morality and conscience. Children, your duty in the family is to love, honor, and obey your parents. Your model is none other than Jesus Christ who, though he was God, made himself subject to Joseph and Mary. Be a comfort and a consolation to your parents. Remember always what they have done for you in your infancy when you could not help yourself. Remember what they are still doing for you in order to give you a place in life. Show your thankfulness and appreciation by being good children. You may not see the reason for all their restrictions and corrections, it is because they truly love you and want you to be good. Family life is so important that it cannot be neglected. In the heart of marriage is not only love but family. The heart of the Church is the family. That is why Church sees the family as a miniature Church. Remember to put God first in your family life and pray always. - Fr. Jubilee Year of Mercy December 27, 2015 Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Imagine: three New Year’s celebrations in little over a month! In late November, Advent began the new liturgical year; December 8, the Jubilee Year of Mercy; this coming Friday, the New Year 2016. In today’s Gospel, after three days of anguish, Mary tells Jesus how desperately she and Joseph have been searching for him. Mary could be speaking for the whole human race. With religious persecutions raging, international and domestic conflicts seething, our family and friends suffering various difficulties, not to mention our own personal problems, how much our world needs Jesus as another New Year veiled in mystery begins! As we pray for God’s mercy to enfold our world and embrace each of us in 2016, let our New Year’s resolution be to live the Jubilee Year of Mercy by being for others, as Mary was, a channel of God’s mercy and an instrument of Christ’s peace. Help kids understand boundaries during the holidays Christmas is a time for families, and extended aunts, uncles, and cousins gather to celebrate the season together. Your children should be comfortable around their family members, but they should also know the limits of their comfort zones, and what to do if someone crosses a line – too many hugs and kisses, or inappropriate tickling. Your children should be comfortable saying “NO” whenever things cross their lines, and they should know that you’ll back them up. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Know the Warning Signs: Just Where Is the Boundary Line?” email: [email protected]. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank you.
