Mutual Help
What is mutual self-help housing?
Mutual Self-Help housing is a method by
which families can achieve home ownership.
CVHC reserves the right to assign lots to applicants. Families form an informal association and agree to help each other build their
houses with technical assistance provided
by a competent construction supervisor.
How many hours of labor does each family contribute to the construction of all the
houses in the group?
Each family contributes as much labor as
is required to complete all the houses in
the group. Generally, about 1,600 hours of
labor per family is required, with each family
contributing at least 40 hours each week.
“Family” hours include the labor of the husband, wife, children 16 years of age or older,
and approved helpers.
If the head of the household is a woman,
can she participate in a housing program?
Yes. The same labor commitment is required.
Who can qualify for a self-help housing
loan?
Generally, there are three qualifications:
a. Good credit status
b. Income limits
c. Ability & willingness to complete labor
requirement
An applicant’s information is entered into the
computer and they are given an interested
list number. It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify CVHC of any changes to their
address and telephone number.
Each lending program has different requirements. The waiting period depends on availability of funds and lots for construction.
