Violence Prevention Training Course with a Public Health Approach an Experience from El Salvador Emperatriz Crespín MD. MPH Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO)/ & German Technical Cooperation GTZ International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War /IANSA Public Health Network • Could violence be prevented as other diseases like diarrhea ,malaria ? • Could health workers do something ? • What do we need to learn to prevent violence ? There is a role of physicians and other health workers in the preservation and promotion of peace is the most significant factor for the attainment of health for all. In El Salvador, almost 3, 000 homicides involving firearms occur each year, youngsters are involved as victims and perpetrators. Objective to assess the role of violence prevention training course with a public health approach addressed for people working with Youth Programs in El Salvador, to make suggestions to improve implementation and follow up. Material and methods. The implementation of the Youth Violence Prevention Curricula of WHO has been developed. the program with 43 participants from different NGO´s (now more than 100) , members from civil society working with violence prevention programs for youngsters and students from the National University of El Salvador from different health specialties developed in three series of workshops T raining, E ducating, A dvancing C ollaboration in H ealth on V iolence and I njury P revention for Y outh TEACH VIP Youth esta basado en: A curricula developed by PAHO and designed to be implemented with students from the health sector and health workers that work in violence and injury prevention. A second phase of follow up included semi –structured interviews after 3 months since the first workshop and a second round of interviews 3 months later in order to explore how the participants applied their knowledge into their current youth violence prevention programs . Discussion and conclusions. It was found that an improved training program for violence prevention with a public health approach for health workers and civil society would benefit the current youth violence prevention programs which could be cost-effective and may even prevent further violence.
