TIEMPO DE ADVIENTO
Significado del Adviento.
—"En el sagrado tiempo de Adviento la Iglesia despierta en nuestra conciencia el recuerdo de los pecados que
tristemente cometimos; nos exhorta a que, reprimiendo los malos deseos y castigando voluntariamente nuestro cuerpo,
nos recojamos dentro de nosotros mismos con piadosas meditaciones, y con ardientes deseos nos movamos a
convertirnos a Dios, que es el único que puede, con su gracia, librarnos de la mancha del pecado y de los males, que son
sus consecuencias."
2. Origen y razón de ser del Adviento. El Adviento (del latín: adventus, " advenimiento" , " llegada" ), es un tiempo
de preparación para el Nacimiento de Jesucristo, en Belén, y representa los cuatro mil y más años que estuvieron los
antiguos aguardando y suspirando por la venida del Mesías.
La institución del Adviento como tiempo preparatorio para Navidad, data, en España, de fines del siglo IV, según consta
por un canon del concilio de Zaragoza celebrado el año 380, y en el resto de Occidente, de principios o mediados del
siglo V.
Hoy día comienza el Adviento el domingo más cercano a la fiesta de San Andrés (30 de noviembre), o sea, entre el 27 de
noviembre y el 3 de diciembre, y abarca, por lo tanto, tres semanas completas y parte de la cuarta.
Por asociación de ideas, a la primera venida de Jesucristo a la tierra, en carne mortal, une la Iglesia el pensamiento de la
segunda, al fin del mundo; y, en consecuencia, el Adviento viene a resultar una preparación a ese doble advenimiento del
Redentor.
ADVENT
The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation
for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew
the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very
similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the
Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event.
The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the
end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas.
Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not mean that Advent
is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor.
The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit. Religious traditions
associated with Advent express all these themes.
