2nd Sundy of Easter
Page 2 Second Sunday of Easter Divine Mercy Sunday—May 1st The first Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, a day of special significance for peace for the world. A day to contemplate Our Lord’s Divine Mercy for all His loved creatures. The message is simply that God is merciful, that He is Love poured out for us, and He wants all of us to turn to Him with trust in repentance and conversion. In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order “to insure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence (the remission of temporal punishment due for a sin that has been sacramentally absolved)...so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of consolation of the Holy Spirit.” God’s plan of Mercy has come to us through the revelations received by a young Polish nun Sister Maria Faustina in the 1930’s. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 30, 2000. I Arose and Am Still with You! from Bishop Robert H. Brom Jesus has passed over from death to life! He speaks to us as He demonstrated and spoke to His contemporaries: “I arose and am still with you.” Let us listen to Jesus not only with our heads, but with our hearts, and in a way that will make a difference in our lives: I arose and am still with you! I am with you to be light for you who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. “In Christ our light, glory fills the earth. Darkness vanishes forever” (Easter Proclamation). I arose and am still with you! I am with you to establish a new creation in which men and women are redeemed, restored to grace and grow together in holiness. “O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam which gained for us so great a Redeemer” (Easter Proclamation). I arose and am still with you! I am with you to lead you from the slavery of selfishness and sin to the freedom of life and joy as children of God. “How boundless God’s merciful love. To ransom slaves, He gives away his Son” (Easter Proclamation). I arose and am still with you! I am with you to be for you a source of living water springing up to eternal life. “Jesus broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave. He sheds His peaceful light on all mankind” (Easter Proclamation). Jesus has passed over from death to life. He is risen and is still with us that we might share in His victory over darkness, evil, sin and death and live in that communion with God for which we were made. In His word, in the sacraments and in the Church, the community of believers, Jesus is alive and in our midst. There are everyday signs, too, that Jesus remains with us on our journey of faith, not in the strict sense of sacrament, but they are there: whenever the love of God is enfleshed by others and in whatever is true and good and beautiful and holy. Easter invites us to read and welcome all the signs of the risen Lord among us, and to live in the joy that the world cannot give, a joy which should never be lost amid the trials and tribulations of life, the joy of Easter. Always our Children Tuesdays, May 10 & 17 7:00pm in the Parish Hall We will be conducting an informal workshop focused on a statement of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops entitled: "Always Our Children: A Pastoral Message to Parents of Homosexual Children." This statement was first published in 1997 but is relatively unknown. During the two evenings we will read through the document. "The purpose of this pastoral message is to reach out to parents trying to cope with the discovery of homosexuality in their adolescent or adult child. It urges families to draw upon the reservoirs of faith, hope and love as they face uncharted futures. It asks them to recognize that the Church offers enormous spiritual resources to strengthen and support them at this moment in their family's life and in the days to come." NCCB The workshop is also open to those with same-sex orientation. Fr. Mike Sinor and Michael Serra, a parishioner, will be guiding the participants through the document.
