Reconciliation (Confession): Saturday: 4:00 p.m. Weekdays: by Appointment Fourth Sunday of Easter April 26, 2015 Wayne’s World Francis Cardinal George (1937-2015) Dear Friends, cares for his flock. Cardinal George cared for this flock, for sure. Happy Easter! Another visit from the Cardinal was the second Sunday of Advent in 2011. Our former Director of Music, Jacob Bancks, a convert to Catholicism himself, and a great admirer of Cardinal George, wrote a musical setting for a Mass. The Cardinal, ever the good shepherd, agreed to come for its premier. He not only celebrated the Mass, he stayed for a reception honoring Jake. As usual, the Cardinal was one of the last to leave the reception. He wanted to be sure that each person who wanted to greet him and to pose for a photograph with him would have the opportunity to do so. Even though his physical heath caused him pain, he didn’t let on. He stayed, posing for picture after picture. And in his humble way, he directed all the attention to Jake. Fifteen days after the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord, Francis Cardinal George slipped away. After valiantly serving this Archdiocese for over seventeen years, after more than fifty years of priesthood, after participating in the election of two popes, after suffering a lifelong illness and after more recent battles with cancer, our longtime shepherd went home to the Good Shepherd. This week we laid him to rest. I considered Cardinal George a pastor and a model of priestly life. He shepherded the Archdiocese of Chicago for more than two thirds of the time that I have been a priest here. He loved the Church. He loved our Lord and he loved Our Lady, and he loved the people of this Archdiocese. I cannot even count the number of times our pilgrimage groups have had the opportunity to be with Cardinal George. Cardinal George always made time for young people. We met him for World Youth Day in cities around the globe. Without fail, he would stay for questions and photos every time. He challenged the young people to stay close to the Lord and close to the Church. He told them that he valued them and that they were important in the life of the Church. I guess I am most grateful for Cardinal George’s wisdom and his directness. I remember that October day in 2005 when I quite literally bumped into the Cardinal at a priest meeting. I had been a full-time associate administrator of Catholic Charities and had truly been enjoying that assignment. After nearly bumping into each other the Cardinal said, “I want you to be a pastor.” I told him that I was just over three years into my term and was really enjoying my ministry. The Cardinal responded, “Then do both!” and turned and walked away. Days later, I received the parish profile of Saint John Berchmans, and within weeks received my assignment here. Some of my best pilgrimage memories of Cardinal George come from the trip in 2008 when more than 200 people from the Archdiocese of Chicago joined the Cardinal on the first Archdiocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. The Cardinal traveled with, stayed with and ate with the pilgrims. He accepted no preferential treatment. He even took time to sit in a confessional — without air-conditioning — for hours hearing the confessions of the pilgrims who joined him. Pope Francis has said that a good shepherd smells like his sheep. In his willingness to walk with, eat with and sweat with his sheep on that pilgrimage in 2008, Cardinal George showed me and so many other what kind of shepherd he really was. He imitated the Good Shepherd, because he believed what Saint John says in today’s second reading: “See what love the Father has bestowed on us… We shall see him as he is!” In the nine years that I have been your pastor, Cardinal George visited this parish twice. In February of 2009, he came for the blessing and dedication of the elevator and accessibility project. He supported the project from its inception. Shortly after I arrived, I had a funeral here. A relative of the deceased arrived, without knowing that the church wasn’t accessible to a person in a motorized wheelchair. After pulling up to the church, the relative saw the steps and sent someone to ask where the accessible entrance was. I told the relative that there really was none. The relative drove off, turned away from mourning and praying with her family. I told Cardinal George that story. He pledged to help me get the elevator installed. He arranged for loans from the Archdiocese to be made and followed the progress intently. As the work commenced, the Cardinal encouraged me to not only install an elevator, but to make the entire sanctuary accessible, so that people of all abilities would be able to answer the call to liturgical ministry in this church. A good shepherd May Cardinal George rest in peace; may his good deeds go with him. Peace, Our Mission: Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place. 2 April 26, 2015 Fourth Sunday of Easter THE YEAR OF THE SACRAMENTS Pope Francis’ Vision of Healing and Communion (JULY 2014 - JUNE 2015) Parish Announcements SEAL The Rite of Confirmation contains these essential words for the conferral of the sacrament: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” The exact meaning of these words may elude us.What does it mean to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit? To seal something can often mean to enclose it, but clearly that is not the meaning of Confirmation. Another meaning is to certify or to guarantee. When something is sealed or has a seal affixed to it, we know that it is real and genuine. As we try to follow Jesus and live his way of discipleship, we may be uncertain. And we should be, especially if we are relying on ourselves and our own efforts. In fact, when we are his confirmed disciples on whom the seal of the Holy Spirit has been set, we can be absolutely certain. We live and walk, not on our own, but by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENTS Many of the students in both our school and Religious Education program are in the final stages of preparing to receive Sacraments in the first week of May. First Communions will be celebrated at the 5pm Mass on Saturday, May 2nd and the 9:45am, 11:30am & 6:30pm Masses on Sunday, May 3rd. Confirmation will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday, May 6th. Please keep these students in your prayers during these final weeks and consider joining us at one or more of the Masses to share their Sacramental joy! SUMMER ON THE SQUARE Save the Date! Summer on the Square will be held on Saturday, June 13th. We will begin with an outdoor Mass at 4pm, and the fun will continue throughout the evening with foods from around the world, various musical performances on the Church steps, and games and activities for the kids! World Day of Prayer for Vocations Raffle tickets will be on sale soon! If you can help with the raffle sale or in anyway at Summer on the Square, sign-up sheets are available in the vestibule or you can contact Jennifer in the rectory office. It will take the entire community to make this event a success. Please consider volunteering your time or purchasing a raffle ticket. Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to priesthood and religious life? •Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. •Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. •Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. •Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call. MASS INTENTIONS All St. John Berchmans parishioners and friends are invited to request Mass intentions for those who have died, for loved ones on their birthdays or anniversaries, or for any other occasion or concern. As the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most powerful prayer of the Church, this is a very effective way to honor the living or pray for the dead. “At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples: ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.’” (Mt 9:37-38) The suggested donation for these Masses is $10 per Mass. We will be limiting the number of intentions to two per Mass, so in order to ensure availability of your requested day and time, please submit this request to the rectory office as soon as possible. Intentions will be added to the calendar on a first-come basis. Mass intentions are now be accepted for all Masses through December 2016. Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection May 10, 2015 Assistance is Available In conjunction with several programs provided by the State of Illinois, Catholic Charities can help you provide for your children. Él no aceptó ningún tratamiento preferencial.
