First Reading: Jeremiah 33: 14-16
The Lord tells of fulfilling the promise he
had made to Israel. He will send a replacement for David, someone who "shall do what
is right and just in the land," believed by
most to mean Jesus.
Second Reading: 1Thessalonians 3:12-4:2
Paul encourages the Thessalonians to be
ready for the coming of the Lord. He explains that although they are conducting
themselves in a way that would please God,
they should always strive to do even better.
Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36
Jesus warns his followers to be prepared for
the end of the world. He reminds them not to
be preoccupied with unimportant events, or
they will be caught unaware rather than being
on watch as they should.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
This Sunday, December 6th at
12:00pm, there will be a procession
in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
starting from Plainfield Public Library and ending with the mass at
1:30pm. Monday, December 7th,
the Torch of the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico reaches St. Mary’s
at 7:00 PM, followed by the Mass. On Friday,
December 11th, at 12:00 AM, we will begin the
Vigil for the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe
with a procession continued with prayer and
music in church. The celebration will be conducted by musical bands with marimba & traditional mariachi music from groups of the Parish.
It will conclude with Mass at 5:00AM.

el Lunes, 7 de Diciembre la Antorcha de la
Basílica de la Virgen de Guadalupe de México
llegara a la Iglesia Santa María a las 7:00PM
culminando con la misa a las 7:00PM. El
viernes 11 de diciembre a las 12.00AM, vamos a comenzar la Vigilia de la fiesta de la
Virgen de Guadalupe con una procesión, que
termina en la Iglesia donde vamos a seguir
con la oración y la música. La celebración
concluirá con la Misa de las 5:00AM, con música de mariachi tradicional. Y otras bandas
musicales de grupos de la Iglesia.

FROM THE HOLY FATHER
Today the Church begins a new liturgical year, a journey that is subsequently enriched by the
Year of Faith, which we observe 50 years after the opening of the Second V atican Council. The
first part of this journey is Advent, constituted, in the Roman Rite, by the 4 weeks that precede
the Christmas of the Lord, that is, the mystery of the Incarnation. The word “advent” means
“coming” or “presence.” In the ancient world it indicated the visit of the king or emperor to a
province; in the language of Christianity it refers to the coming of God, to his presence in the
world; a mystery that involves the entire cosmos and all of history, but that knows 2 culminating
moments: the first and the second coming of Jesus Christ. The first is precisely the Incarnation;
the second his glorious return at the end of time. These 2 moments that are chronologically distant – and it is not given to us to know how distant – touch each other in their depths, because
with his death and resurrection Jesus has already realized that transformation of man and the
cosmos that is the final goal of creation. But before the end, it is necessary that the Gospel be
preached to all nations, Jesus says in the Gospel of St. Mark (cf. Mark 13:10). The Lord’s coming continues, the world must be penetrated by his presence.
Our collaboration is required in this permanent coming of the Lord in the proclamation of the
Gospel; and the Church, which is like the Bride to be, the Betrothed of the crucified and risen
Lamb of God (cf. Apocalypse 21:9), in communion with her Lord collaborates in this coming of
the Lord in which his glorious return already begins.
The Word of God reminds us of all this today, describing the conduct that is necessary to ready
for the Lord’s coming. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus says to the disciples: “Do not let your hearts
be weighed by dissipation, drunkenness and the troubles of life ... be vigilant, therefore, praying
at all times” (Luke 21:34, 36). So, sobriety and prayer. And the apostle Paul also invites us to
“grow and superabound in love” among ourselves and toward others, to make our hearts strong
and blameless in sanctity (cf. 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13). In the midst of the upheavals of the
world, or in the deserts of indifference and materialism, Christians welcome the salvation that
comes from God and bear witness to it with a different way of living, like a city set on a hill. “In
those days,” the prophet Jeremiah announces, “Jerusalem will live in peace and be called ‘the
Lord our justice’” (33:16). The community of believers is a sign of God, of his justice, which is
already present and active in history but is not yet fully realized, and because of this is always
awaited, invoked, sought with patience and courage.
The Virgin Mary perfectly incarnates the spirit of Advent; this spirit is one of listening to God, of
profound desire to do his will, of joyous service to our neighbor. Letting ourselves be guided by
her, so that the God who comes does not find us closed and distracted, but can, in each one of us,
extend a part of his kingdom of love, of justice and of peace.

DEL SANTO PADRE
Hoy, la Iglesia inicia un nuevo año litúrgico, un camino que se ve reforzado por el Año de la Fe,
a cincuenta años de la apertura del Concilio Vaticano II. El primer tiempo de este itinerario es el
Adviento, formado, en el rito romano, por las cuatro semanas previas a la Navidad, que es el
misterio de la Encarnación. La palabra "adviento" significa "venida" o "presencia". En el mundo
antiguo indicaba la visita del rey o del emperador a una provincia; en el lenguaje cristiano se refiere a la venida de Dios, a su presencia en el mundo; un misterio que rodea la totalidad del cosmos y de la historia, pero que conoce de dos momentos culminantes: la primera y la segunda
venida de Jesucristo. La primera es la Encarnación; y la segunda es el retorno glorioso al final de
los tiempos.
Estos dos momentos, que cronológicamente son distantes --y no nos es dado saber cuánto--, y
que en profundidad se tocan, porque con su muerte y resurrección, Jesús ya ha realizado aquella
transformación del hombre y del cosmos que es el fin último de la creación. Pero antes del final,
es necesario que la Buena Nueva sea anunciada a todas las naciones, dice Jesús en el evangelio
de san Marcos (cf. Mc. 13,10). La venida del Señor continúa, el mundo debe ser penetrado por
su presencia. Y esta venida permanente del Señor en el anuncio del evangelio pide constantemente de nuestra colaboración; y la Iglesia, que es como la novia, la prometida esposa del
Cordero de Dios crucificado y resucitado (cf. Ap. 21,9), en comunión con su Señor, colabora en
esta venida del Señor, en la que ya empieza su regreso glorioso
Esto es a lo que nos llama hoy la palabra de Dios, trazando la línea de conducta a seguir con el
fin de estar preparados para la venida del Señor. En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús dice a los
discípulos: "Cuiden que no se emboten sus corazones por el libertinaje, por la embriaguez y por
las preocupaciones de la vida ... estén en vela, pues, orando en todo tiempo" (Lc. 21,34.36). Por
lo tanto, sobriedad y oración. Y el apóstol Pablo añade la invitación a "progresar y sobreabundar
en el amor" de unos con otros y hacia los demás, para que se consoliden nuestros corazones y
seamos irreprochables en santidad (cf. 1 Ts. 3,12-13). En medio de la agitación del mundo, o
ante los desiertos de la indiferencia y del materialismo, los cristianos acogen la salvación de Dios
y dan testimonio con una forma de vida diferente, como una ciudad asentada sobre un monte.
"En aquellos días --anuncia el profeta Jeremías--, Jerusalén vivirá en seguro, y será llamada:
Yahvé, nuestra justicia" (33,16). La comunidad de los creyentes es un signo del amor de Dios, de
su justicia, que ya está presente y operante en la historia, pero que aún no se ha realizado plenamente, y por lo tanto es siempre esperada, invocada, buscada con paciencia y heroísmo.
La Virgen María encarna a la perfección el espíritu del Adviento, que implica escuchar a Dios, y
un profundo deseo de hacer su voluntad, de gozoso servicio a los demás. Dejémonos guiar por
ella, para que el Dios que viene no nos encuentre cerrados o distraídos, sino que pueda, en cada
uno de nosotros, extender un poco su reino de amor, de justicia y de paz.
