Pastors Corner Jan. 24, 2016 Page 2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time We are the Body of Christ In our second reading today St. Paul says that ―as a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.‖ This analogy of the body provides one of Paul‘s most striking metaphors. Two key points are to be drawn from this analogy. First, as in the body, all members are necessary; so in the body of Christ all are necessary. This reminds us that each member of the believing community is important and should not be forgotten. No matter whether we like an individual, we must realize that person is necessary for the completion of the plan of God. If we do not like the shape of a finger, we do not cut it off. We realize instead its importance. The second point is that what happens to one member has an effect on all. If we injure one part of our body, we feel the pain all through it. Therefore, when we hurt one member of the community, we are sending a rippling effect of hurt all though the community. We must constantly realize that because we form one body, our actions do have effects beyond our capacity to predict or understand. Therefore, we must think before we act, for we are the body of Christ. Our Archbishop is asking our support for the Body of Christ here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by making a commitment to the Together in Mission Campaign. The poorest areas of this wonderful Archdiocese need our help to provide the basic services and keep the church and school doors open. Please make a commitment to the Body of Christ here in Los Angeles. In giving to THEM you are actually giving to US. Peace, Fr. Tom Together In Mission – The mailing for the 2016 Together in Mission Campaign has begun. This Campaign assists needy parishes and schools in our Archdiocese (37 parishes and 56 Catholic schools). These funds help maintain a meaningful Catholic presence in some of the most impoverished areas of our Archdiocese. Having been a pastor for over 8 years in a parish that received financial assistance through this program I know first-hand how vital this campaign is. Please make some commitment for this Campaign. Envelopes are in the pews and brochures are in the back of the Church. Thank you. In the Spotlight St. Vincent de Paul Dennis & Kathy Clark Kathy has been a parishioner since 1981 and I have been there since 1990. We actually met at a Little Rock bible study class. Kathy has been involved with St. Vincent de Paul for 30 years and is currently the vice-president of the council. The Vincentians began their mission to serve the poor 180 years ago in France and are now a worldwide organization. Here in the Antelope Valley SVDP Our Lady of Charity Council serves all of the needy regardless of their faith. We serve meals on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and feed between 120 and 180 people at each meal. We provide food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter as well as the Toy Giveaway for children at Christmas. We provide clothing and toiletries as needed. We also conduct home visits to those who ask for help and, after an evaluation, may provide financial assistance for utilities and/or rent. Kathy loves cooking the morning meals and leading the morning prayers before the food is served. Her fellow Vincentians are all good caring people and the feedback we receive from those we serve is a joyous thing. When Jesus said, ―whatever you do to the least of these you also do unto me‖ I think he was speaking about the kind of work we do at St. Vincent de Paul. This is an opportunity to actually do something about the most forgotten and needy segment of our valley residents. If Jesus walked the earth today, I think he'd be right there at our facility on Trevor, serving food, sorting clothing, and providing counsel to them, just as we do. Giving time to this effort pays dividends far beyond what one might imagine. Helping the needy leave us feeling happy and fulfilled. If you are interested in our ministry, please stop by our Site 1 facility at 45058 Trevor Ave, Lancaster, or you can call at (661) 942-3222. Page 6 Kik Messenger and the Dangers of Anonymous Messages Ushers and Greeters Needed Social media sites are available to anyone with an internet connection . Your kids may be sharing their lives with complete strangers, and parents should be aware of the sites they use, what they share, and who their friends are. One mobile app, Kik, is regarded as the most dangerous site for internet predators, because users can send messages to anyone with a cellphone, including young children. Kik has no options for parental controls, leaving kids exposed to the entire web. To learn more about this app in the Virtus® article ―Mobile App Danger—Kik Messenger,‖ email [email protected]. A warm welcome greatly enhances worship and community even before the Mass begins. For newcomers, it is the first impression that people have about how friendly our church body truly is. The simple message that they provide is: "all are welcome in the presence of God's people!" Pray for Vocations Please remember to pray for more vocations to the consecrated life and the priesthood . You may also go to the parish office and check out the ―Vocation Chalice‖ for a week as a reminder and tool to pray for vocations. Greeters welcome the parishioners as they enter Mass and the Ushers give assistance during the worship service. It would imply coming 20 minutes before Mass begins in order to serve. If you are interested in volunteering please call (661) 202-0995, or even talk to an usher or greeter after any of the Masses to inquire. Thank you!
