The Zeitgeist - Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral
Saint Thomas Aquinas April 3, 2013 Cathedral 310 West 2 nd St reet Reno NV 89503 7 7 5 / 329-2571 The Zeitgeist Zeitgeist is a German word meaning, roughly, the spirit of the times. It’s not always easy to capture the spirit of times so as to give it a clear, comprehensive and durable meaning. Elusiveness is, of course, the nature of spiritual things. Nonetheless, from the perspective of Christian discipleship, one thing is clear: not every spirit comes from God (cf 1 John 4:1-3). Therefore, the Apostle admonishes us, we are to test the spirits, to probe and discern them to see if they are consistent with Gospel of Jesus, with our Lord’s example, with the Son’s love for the Father and God’s love for us. Two very disturbing elements of the national Zeitgeist have penetrated to northern Nevada in recent months and will begin, more and more, to impact the Body of Christ in both its spiritual mission and its institutional commitments. Firstly, there is a bill (SJR-13) before the 77th Legislature now in session in Carson City that removes from the Nevada Constitution the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This is certainly the national Zeitgeist, is it not? Who today has not witnessed the spectacle of once conservative and allegedly profamily politicians bailing out of the “sinking” ship of traditional marriage? While politicians are thinking of the polling that impacts fundraising for their next election campaign, the rest of the nation stands in utter bewilderment as the last vestiges of natural law are stripped away from the most fundamental institution of our society. The procreation of children is eviscerated of any meaning in the context of law and public policy. Secondly, Planned Parenthood is promoting legislation (AB-230) that will place their pro-abortion and pro-contraception agenda into every Nevada public school classroom as a requirement. How ironic that our state consistently ranks at the bottom of the list of national high school graduation rates, but instead of lowering teacher-student ratios in the public school classroom, the Zeitgeist would rather dispense contraception to twelve year olds without their parents’ knowledge. No indeed, it is not every spirit that comes from God. Friar Francisco Nahoe OFM Conv Budget News Thank you for your support to help us meet our Monthly commitments & Religious Programs. THIS YEAR, THE CATHEDRAL RECOGNIZED BRIAN SAEMAN & JUAN IBARRA. Brian Saeman, an alumnus of the University of Nevada and Gonzaga University of Law. Brian is an active parish council member of St Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, a past Grand Knight of Nevada Council 978 and a member of the Reno Catholic Business & Professional Organization. At the University of Nevada, Brian is an Alumni Council board member and this year’s Vice-President for Student Outreach. Professionally, Brian has served as an editor of the Across Borders International Law Journal, is a current member of the Nevada Bar. Here in Reno, he has served as an intern at Delay, Curran, Thompson, Portarolo & Walker and as a shareholder at Guild, Russell, Gallagher & Fuller, Ltd. Whether it’s in connection with the Knights of Columbus or Parish Council activities or ushering and helping to keep things orderly a the Sunday-morning Masses, when you need something done, Brian is a go-to guy at St Thomas Aquinas Cathedral. Just last month, when the Cathedral’s Homeschooling Coop director expressed her concern about having to cook corned beef and cabbage for more than 100 people for the St Patrick’s dinner, he was heard to have remarked, “cooking for a hundred is no problem. It’s just like cooking for two hundred!” Apparently, his experience in the Knights of Columbus have taught him skills that you can’t count on learning in law school. At the Cathedral, we’re very proud to have Brian as an active parishioners & Parish Council Member. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Juan Ibarra born in tiny town of Capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe in Jalisco, Mexico. Juan Ibarra was reared according to a traditional Mexican piety that emphasizes personal humility, religious duty and filial devotion to the Mother of God under her title as the Virgen de Guadalupe. A resident of Nevada for twenty years, Juan reared his three children in Reno. He is one of eleven brothers and sisters, so if you ever need to fill up a space, make sure to invite the Ibarra siblings and their respective families. Juan and his wife, Maria Reyes, are owners of the local Mexican deli El Rosal, a business that also supplies tortillas and other Mexican foods to local restaurants & casinos. Part of the bedrock of our long-term ministry to Latino families, Juan is a faithful supporter of the Cathedral’s Spanish-language liturgical and pastoral activities. Every year, Juan & his family are instrumental in planning the multiple activities associated with the December 12th Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe and he has been a generous contributor to the annual breakfast and dinner served every year to all comers in honor of the Virgen. In his typically humble manner, when we told him that he had been chosen by the parish council for this award, he said, “¿Pero porque yo?” At the Cathedral, we’re very proud to have Juan as an active parishioners and Eucharistic Minister. If you get the opportunity, please be sure to congratulate Brian and Juan. Michael Brimer spoke about a kit of supplies and making sure that there was a way to stay informed. I know that most of us do not have one of these kits made up in the next few weeks I will attempt to have an insert in the bulletin with what everyone would need for one of these survival kits. DIOCESE OF RENO SCHOLARSHIP- OPEN THE DOOR OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION TO A LOCAL STUDENT EL BUEN PASTOR El Buen Pastor no sólo nos conoce sino que da su vida por nosotros. . . y me siguen".
