Where is happiness? Has God put in the human heart a deep desire that nothing
or no one can satisfy? Many, especially the saints, have experienced that infinite
longing that can only be satisfied by something infinite. In today’s readings,
Christ tells us that whoever finds Him will never be hungry; whoever believes in
Him will never thirst. The secret to human happiness is hidden in these words.
The beginning of happiness is to start looking for God sincerely. To believe in
Christ is to transform our heart in order to change our attitude towards
others. When we learn by faith to give more than to receive, then we will start
to taste true and deep happiness. Jesus said: “It is more blessed to give than to
receive.” St. Augustine, who lived in anguish until he found Christ, wrote: “You
have made us for Yourself, o Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in
You”. May each of us start living this experience today.

¿Dónde está la felicidad? ¿O es que Dios ha puesto en el corazón humano un deseo
profundo que nada ni nadie puede calmar? Muchos, sobre todo los santos, han
experimentado que esa ansia infinita solamente se puede satisfacer con algo infinito.
Cristo nos dice en las lecturas de hoy que quien lo encuentra no tendrá más hambre y
el que cree en Él no tendrá más sed. Y en estas palabras está encerrado todo el
secreto de la felicidad humana. Comenzar a buscar sinceramente a Dios es el
principio de la felicidad. Creer en Cristo es transformar el corazón para cambiar
nuestra actitud hacia los demás. Cuando por la fe aprendemos a dar más que a
recibir, entonces comenzaremos a saborear la felicidad verdadera y profunda. Jesús
nos dijo: “Hay más alegría en dar que en recibir”. San Agustín, que fue un hombre
angustiado hasta que encontró a Cristo, escribió: “Oh Dios, hiciste nuestro corazón
para ti y está inquieto hasta que descanse en ti”. Ojalá hoy, cada uno de nosotros,
comencemos a vivir esta misma experiencia.

Ecuador, to help our brothers and sisters there. Congratulations on a job well
done!

Over 25 young people from our parish joined nearly 3,000 others who attended the
Steubenville Conference in Orlando on the weekend of July 17-19. The conference, founded
to motivate North American Catholics to rebuild the Church, was an unforgettable
experience through which they formed new bonds with others who share their ideals,
strengthened their faith and it will be instrumental in helping form the leaders of tomorrow.
A warm and heartfelt “thank you” to all who contributed to make their trip possible.

Sin and division between man and woman
General Audience, April 22, 2015
Sin generates distrust and division between man and woman. Their relationship
will be undermined by a thousand forms of abuse and subjugation, misleading
seduction and humiliating ignorance, even the most dramatic and violent kind.
And history bears the scar. Let us think, for example, of those negative excesses
of patriarchal cultures. Think of the many forms of male dominance whereby the
woman was considered second class. Think of the exploitation and the
commercialization of the female body in the current media culture. And let us
also think of the recent epidemic of distrust, skepticism, and even hostility that is
spreading in our culture — in particular an understandable distrust from women
— on the part of a covenant between man and woman that is capable, at the
same time, of refining the intimacy of communion and of guarding the dignity of
difference.
El pecado y la división entre hombre y mujer

El pecado genera desconfianza y división entre el hombre y la mujer. Su relación
se verá asechada por mil formas de abuso y sometimiento, seducción engañosa y
prepotencia humillante, hasta las más dramáticas y violentas. La historia carga
las huellas de todo eso. Pensemos, por ejemplo, en los excesos negativos de las
culturas patriarcales. Pensemos en las múltiples formas de machismo donde la
mujer era considerada de segunda clase. Pensemos en la instrumentalización y
mercantilización del cuerpo femenino en la actual cultura mediática. Pero
pensemos también en la reciente epidemia de desconfianza, de escepticismo, e
incluso de hostilidad que se difunde en nuestra cultura —en especial a partir de
una comprensible desconfianza de las mujeres— respecto a una alianza entre
hombre y mujer que sea capaz, al mismo tiempo, de afinar la intimidad de la
comunión y custodiar la dignidad de la diferencia.
Saints this Week/Santos de la Semana
August 4, St. John Vianney, known as the "Cure of Ars,”
he was ordained a priest in 1815 and three years later he
was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet,
where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls
made him known throughout the Christian world. He
heard confessions for 16 hours a day, and is the patron of
parish priests.
Agosto 4, San Juan Vianney, conocido como el “Cura de
Ars”, fue ordenado sacerdote en 1815 y enviado a la remota
parroquia de Ars en Francia, donde su reputación como confesor
y director de almas lo hizo conocido en todo el mundo cristiano.

August 8, St. Dominic de Guzmán, born at Calaruega, Spain, he
preached against the Albigensian heresy, and with six followers
founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), which was
phenomenally successful in obtaining conversions by applying
Dominic’s concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with popular
needs. He is the patron saint of astronomers.

Next Sunday, August 9, our parish will host Most Rev. Antonisamy Francis, Bishop of
Kumbakonam, India, as part of the Archdiocese’s collaboration with the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith. Let us give him a warm welcome and help his diocese to train
catechists, provide catechetical materials and meet other goals to help the poor Catholic
population.

All we possess is a gift from God. Everything we have is freely given for our own good.
This is basic to our faith and is often repeated throughout Scripture. Just as basic and
repeated is another truth: we should return a portion of those gifts (our time, talent
and treasure) to God in gratitude for the abundant generosity we have received.

REPORT FROM OUR MINISTRIES
St. Vincent de Paul Society
Thanks to the generosity of St. Hugh parishioners, the St. Vincent de Paul Society has
been able to help many of those in need. Most contributions have gone to paying rent,
accounting for 48% of assistance; 25% going to utilities, food, transportation and legal
expenses. We have also helped to pay for funeral expenses and purchased a Life Vest
for a very ill heart patient.
As mentioned before, we would like to be able to help a regular parishioner in obtaining employment. She is perfectly bilingual and has experience in Human Resources
and office management. If anyone knows of an opportunity in these fields, please contact us at [email protected], or call the office and leave us a message.
Gracias a la generosidad de los parroquianos de St. Hugh, la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul
ha podido ayudar a muchos necesitados. La mayoría de las contribuciones, 48%, han sido
