Blessed Are You Among Women - Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral
Saint Thomas Aquinas December 22, 2013 Cathedral 310 West 2nd St reet Reno NV 89503 775/ 3 2 9 -2 5 7 1 Blessed Are You Among Women If the figure of John the Baptist seemed to dominate the earlier phase of Advent, there is no question that Roman liturgy today turns resolutely toward the Blessed Virgin Mary. The mythologies of all ancient cultures depict the overshadowing of a human person by a divine being, but the results are invariably disastrous for the human. Nonetheless, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the eternal Word of God finds both a willing and a worthy dwelling place. Moreover, His entrance into human history as the Virgin’s child brings not woe, but weal, not calamity, but salvation. In his first biography of the Poverello, Friar Thomas of Celano says that Saint Francis of Assisi “embraced the Mother of Jesus with inexpressible love, since she made the Lord of Majesty a brother to us. Francis honored her with his own praises, poured out prayers to her, and offered her his love in a way that no human tongue can express.” In his well-known Salutation of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Francis writes: Hail, O Lady, Holy Queen, Mary, holy Mother of God, Who are the Virgin made Church, chosen by the most Holy Father in heaven whom he consecrated with His most holy beloved Son and with the Holy Spirit the Paraclete, in whom there was and is all fullness of grace and every good. Hail His Palace! Hail His Tabernacle! Hail His Dwelling! Hail His Robe! Hail His Servant! Hail His Mother! Saint Francis' remarkable phrase Virgin made Church marks a stunning anticipation of the mariology of the Second Vatican Council 700 years later. Just as the Blessed Virgin herself once brought the Word of God to the world in concrete terms, so too the Church today must incarnate the Word in concrete ways within the actual world in which contemporary disciples of Jesus now live. May our celebration of Christmas mark a renewed effort on the part of all Christians to live the Gospel more authentically and, like the Blessed Virgin, to make a Christ a brother to all. + Pax et bonum, Friar Francisco Nahoe OFM Conv Budget News Date Dec 1 Dec 8 Dec 9 Dec 15 Dec 22 Dec 25 Dec 29 Thank you for your support to help us meet our Monthly commitments & Religious Programs 1st Collection 2nd Collection 2nd Collection To Benefit $9,217 $2,005 Long Term Repairs $5,650 No 2nd collection $ No 2nd Collection $ $ Retirement Fund for Religious $ No 2nd collection $ No 2nd collection $ Parish Office Closed December 23 - January 3, 2014. ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE FRANCISCAN LEPER MISSION IN VIETNAM Please make checks payable to: St Thomas Aquinas Cathedral. FROM THE DESK OF DEACON RICHARD RAMM FRIARS’ FOOD PANTRY Over the past months we have received quite a bit of good canned items. Since quite a few of the people served live on the street, the pantry needs a continual supply of small cans 5-7oz of precooked items like Vienna Sausages, Red Beans & Rice, Stew, and packages of Tuna & crackers. The pantry has found a supplier for the majority of the hard to find food that has a good protein count. There cost is reasonable but it takes money to use them. With the end of the year coming and you would like to lessen your taxes, please remember the Friars Pantry. A man, late for an important meeting, was searching desperately for a parking spot in a crowded lot. Looking up to the sky he entreated: “Lord if you find me a parking spot, I promise to start going to church again.” The words were barely out of his mouth, when a spot opened up right in front of his car. The man looked back up, “never mind I found one.” THE BOOKSTORE & GIFT SHOP Christmas is just 3 days away. Please STOP by and check out the inventory for that last minute gift. Jack will be more than happy to give you some ideas. Entrada Ven, ven, Señor, no tardes, ven, ven que te esperamos. Ven, ven, Señor, no tardes, ven pronto Señor.
