PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Parishioners:
Next Sunday, April 17, is World Day of Prayer for Vocations,
when the Church throughout the world will be praying for
vocations. Although many books and articles have been written
on this topic, the majority of parishioners still have many
misconceptions about vocations. Allow me to share with you my
own vocation story.
Sometimes before I was born, my parents joined the
Vietnamese Missionary Society. They were sent to a poor area in
Saigon City that has very few Catholics. As my mother was going
to the hospital to give birth to me, our Chinese landlord went to
see a fortune teller. The fortune teller said that the child being
born would be troublesome for Chinese people. When we came
back from the hospital, the landlord refused to let us back into the
house. My parents went to the local parish priest for help. I
ended up spending the first two weeks of my life in the parish’s
sacristy. Three missionary priests (one Vietnamese, one Italian,
and one Chinese) baptized me and a seminarian became my
godfather.
The Vietnam War shattered many dreams and disrupted
many lives. My family scattered to different places, with my
mother ending up as far as Rochester, NY. After 9 years of
separations and many failed attempts, I was finally able to leave
Vietnam and reunite with my mom. I never forget the day I left
Vietnam. As I was saying goodbye to my grandparents, my
extremely devout grandmother was going on and on about temp-
tations in America. To give her some assurance, I blurted out:
“Don’t worry, grandma! Once I got to America, I will enter the
seminary!” I myself couldn’t believe what I said!
Two years later, however, with the help of my godfather, I
entered a Chinese Missionary religious order. The order sent me
to study in California, Taiwan, New York, Oregon, Rome and
Connecticut. But I ended up leaving the order and entering the
Diocese of Brooklyn. Bishop DiMarzio ordained me to the
priesthood and put me in charge of the Diocesan Chinese Ministry
in Brooklyn.
As you can see, my vocation was not a result of a break-up
with my girlfriend or a desperate attempt to escape family life or
a last resort career choice. Those are all myths about vocations.
The truth is: God has a plan for me and He planned it so that I
would hear his calling at certain points in my life. I pray that
many other men and women would answer God’s call as I did. It
still is the best decision of my life!

LAY MINISTRY PROGRAM
The Pastoral Institute’s Lay Ministry Program is for sponsored
persons who wish to serve in parish ministry. Candidate for the
program must have parish sponsorship. Nominations are now
being accepted for classes that start in September 2016. If you
are open to contributing to the pastoral life of the parish, please
speak with Fr. Do.

PAROCHIAL DINNER
On Saturday, April 23, at 7:00 PM, in the school auditorium
(Kelly Hall), we will once again have our Parochial Dinner. This
annual event is organized by our parish’s Charity Committee, not
only to raise fund for our parish, but also to bring everyone in the
parish together for a good time. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for

DIVINE MERCY PILGRIMAGE
All are invited to join Bishop DiMarzio on a pilgrimage to the
Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA, on Saturday,
June 18. Buses will be leaving at 7:00 AM from St. Patrick’s
Church (9511 4th Ave, Brooklyn) and will return in the evening.

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE
All are invited to join Bishop DiMarzio and the Diocese of
Brooklyn on a Marian Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on Saturday, October
29. Buses will leave early in the morning and return by 10:00 PM
of the same day. Overnight packages are also available. Please
contact Fr. Lin in the rectory for more information.
PARISH PILGRIMAGE
All are invited to join St. Agatha Parish on a Year of Mercy
pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, visiting
Mexico City, Xochimilco, Cuernavaca, and Taxco, November 18-22.
Cost for double occupancy is $1200 per person; a non-refundable
$400 is required. For more information, please contact Fr. Ortiz in
the rectory.
LA PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO
Queridos Feligreses:
El próximo domingo, 17 de abril es el Día Mundial de
Oración por las Vocaciones, cuando la Iglesia en todo el mundo
estará orando por las vocaciones. Aunque muchos libros y
artículos se han escrito sobre este tema, la mayoría de los
feligreses todavía tienen muchas ideas falsas sobre las vocaciones.
Permítanme compartir con ustedes mi propia historia vocacional.
En algún momento antes de mi nacimiento, mis padres se
unieron a la Sociedad Misionera vietnamita. Fueron enviados a una
zona pobre de la ciudad de Saigón que tiene muy pocos católicos.
Mientras mi madre iba al hospital a dar a luz a mí, nuestro
propietario chino fue a ver a un adivino. El adivino dijo que el niño
que iba a nacer sería problemático para el pueblo chino. Cuando
volvimos del hospital, el propietario los negó la entrada a la casa.
Mis padres fueron al párroco de la iglesia local en busca de ayuda.
Terminé pasando las dos primeras semanas de mi vida en la
sacristía de la parroquia. Tres sacerdotes misioneros (uno
vietnamita, un italiano y un chino) me bautizaron y un seminarista
se convirtió en mi padrino.
La guerra de Vietnam destrozo muchos sueños e interrumpió
muchas vidas. Mi familia se dispersó a diferentes lugares, con mi
madre terminando hasta Rochester, Nueva York. Después de 9
años de separación y de muchos intentos fallidos, por fin pude salir
de Vietnam y reunirme con mi madre. Nunca olvido el día que salí
de Vietnam. Mientras les decía adiós a mis abuelos, mi abuela
extremadamente devota habla sin cesar sobre las tentaciones en
América. Para darle cierta seguridad, dije bruscamente: "No se
preocupe, abuela! Cuando llegue a América, voy a entrar al
seminario!” Yo mismo no podía creer lo que había dicho!
Sin embargo, dos años más tarde, con la ayuda de mi padrino,
entré en una orden religiosa china Misionera. La orden religiosa
me envió a estudiar en California, Taiwán, Nueva York, Oregon,
Roma y Connecticut. Pero terminé dejando la orden religiosa y
entre a la Diócesis de Brooklyn. El Obispo DiMarzio me ordenó al
sacerdocio y me puso a cargo del Ministerio chino Diocesano en
Brooklyn.
Como puedes ver, mi vocación no fue el resultado de una
ruptura con mi novia o un intento desesperado de escapar de la
vida de la familia o una elección de carrera como último recurso.
Esos son todos mitos sobre las vocaciones. La verdad es: Dios tiene
un plan para mí y Él lo planeó para que pudiera escuchar su
llamado en ciertos momentos de mi vida. Oro para que muchos
otros hombres y mujeres quieran responder al llamado de Dios,
como lo hice. Todavía es la mejor decisión de mi vida!

El Programa de Ministerio Laico del Instituto Pastoral es
para personas patrocinadas que desean servir en el ministerio
parroquial. Los candidatos al programa deben tener el patrocinio

神父的话
主内亲爱的兄弟姐妹：
下个星期天，四月十七日，是世界圣召祈祷日，普
世教会一起为圣召祈祷。虽然很多书和文章已经讨论
过这个题目，但是大多数的教友对于圣召仍有许多错
误观念。请允许我在这里和大家分享我自己的圣召故
事。
在我出生以前，我的父母加入了越南传教会。他们
被派到西贡的一个只有很少天主教徒的贫穷地方。当
我母亲到医院要生我的时候，我们的华人房东去见了
一个算命师。这个算命师告诉他要出生的孩子为中国
人将是一个麻烦，所以当我们从医院回来的时候，房东
不让我们进去房子里面，我的父母只好到当地的神父
那里求助。我生命中的前两个星期就住在了教堂的更
衣所里，三位传教士神父（一位越南人，一位意大利人，
和一位中国人）给我领洗，一位修士做了我的代父。
越南战争使许多人的梦想破灭，也扰乱了许多人的
生活。我们全家分散去了不同的地方，而我的母亲远至
纽约的罗切斯特（Rochester, NY）。经过九年的分离和
多次失败的尝试，我终于离开了越南和我母亲团聚。我
永远不会忘记我离开越南的那一天，当我和祖父母告
别的时候，我极其虔诚的奶奶一遍又一遍的说着在美
国会遇到的诱惑。为了给她一些保证，我脱口而出说
到：“不要担心，奶奶！一到了美国，我就进修道
院！”我自己都不相信我当时所说的！
不管怎样，两年以后，在我领洗代父的帮助下，我
加入了一个中国的传教修会。修会送我到加州、台湾、
纽约、俄勒冈州、罗马和康州学习，但最后我离开了修
会而加入了布碌仑教区。迪马守主教祝圣我为神父并
且任命我主管布碌仑教区的华人牧灵工作。
就如我所说的，我的圣召不是因为和女朋友分手或
想逃离家庭生活，也不是不得已的职业选择，这些都是
关于圣召的错误看法，而真相是：天主对我有一个计
划，他也使我在生命中的特别时刻听到他的召叫。我祈
求有更多的男女都如同我一样回应天主的召叫，这仍
然是我生命中最美好的决定！
