Wonderful Wizards
of Words at Flynn

his year marked the commencement of James J. Flynn’s Vocabulary
Word Wizard Kickoff Extravaganza.
As many of the teachers, students,
and school staff walked the halls,
they were pleasantly surprised to see
riveting bulletin boards that illustrated how capably students have
been mastering a brilliant
vocabulary.
“It is magnificent to see and hear
our children using terms that are
quite extraordinary,” said teacher
Virginia Morales. “They love feeling
as if they could conquer the world,
and they can!”
Flynn teachers are indeed introducing a “magical world of words.”
Recently, Miss Morales’ “Wizards
in the Making” traveled along the
halls going into many of the classrooms. Each student marched down
the hallways with pride wearing a
new vocabulary word around their
neck.
“A great sense of pride seemed to
just pour out of them as they told
staff and students about the vocabulary word they wore,” said Miss
Morales. “They were all so
delighted to be able to define and
use their ‘wizard’ word in a
sentence.”
As eloquently stated on Mrs.
Malloy’s bulletin board, “We’re off to
see the wizard ... the wonderful
wizard of words!” ■

“Crazy Socks Day” . . . “Día de Medias Locas”
Administrators, staff and students enjoyed “Crazy Socks Day” at the Dr. Herbert N. Richardson 21st Century
School. Though it was a fourth grade fundraiser, connections were still made in literacy and math by writing
about how much everyone enjoyed seeking each other’s “crazy socks” and graphing and plotting information for
math connections. It was truly a fun-filled day and learning experience for everyone involved. ■ Administradores,

students enjoyed a visit from Lenape
Indian Kevin Two Steps, who
presented a wonderful program on
the history and life of the Lenape
Indian Tribe.
Kevin Two Steps brought beautiful clothing, blankets, jewelry, tools
and other artifacts that the tribe
makes. He told many exciting stories
about his own life and that of his
fellow natives.
The students were able to join him
in some games that the Indian
children loved to play, and they were
able to get up close to all the
fascinating artifacts he brought.
All in all, it made for a very
interactive and entertaining
assembly. ■

It’s A Winter of Wonder
at ECC at St Mary’s
F

and it all began with a railroad trip to
Toyland! Each student had the
opportunity to be the conductor of
their own train as they rode to
Toyland. Once they arrived, students
were photographed at the Toyland
Station for their families to have a
very special keepsake.
There was also a blizzard of
activity as students and staff prepared
for the BLIZZARD OF FUN Book
Fair. Family Literacy Night provided
families a chance to shop at the book
fair in the evening, while enjoying
storytelling, games and a visit with
Clifford, the Big Red Dog!
Then there was Gingerbread
Adventure Day with musical
entertainment for a family dance, and
yummy snacks from the Gingerbread
Boy.
The flurry of activity will continue
in 2008! During January and
February the school’s Nutrition
Project will be up and running. The
Nutrition Project is a collaboration of
the NJ State Department of
Agriculture and Rutgers University,
and consists of eight classroom visits
from a nutrition specialist. The
children will enjoy activities such as
blending smoothies and making fruit
salads. Through this initiative,
children are learning about making
healthy food choices for themselves,
as well as learning to try new foods
and tastes.
In January, Winnie the Pooh and
friends also visited in celebration of
Winnie’s birthday. Character visits
and storytelling truly made this a day
to remember.
This year’s Annual Moonlight Ball
featured a 1950’s Sock Hop theme,
with the DJ spinning plenty of
“golden oldies.”
And finally, love is in the air for
February as the school hosts a
Sweethearts’ Dance. ■

alimentos nuevos y sabrosos.
En enero, Winnie the Pooh y sus

The Vice Principal’s
Classroom
A trip to the Vice Principal’s office
has never been an experience any student has looked forward to or held
among their cherished school memories.
However, Shull Vice Principal Dr.
Alfred Cresci is out to change history
so to speak.
The Magnificent Seven Math
Seminar is the name he’s given to the
group of students who meet in his
office for a bit of individualized
small group instruction. The students
gather during regular class time for a
little individual attention as needed.
“It’s just that small extra push a
good student often needs to get over
some troublesome material,” said Dr.
Cresci. “They like it. It changes the
environment and allows for an easier
connection to the material.”
Dr. Cresci, a former math teacher,
likes transforming his office into a
classroom.
“Once a teacher, always a teacher,” he said. “It’s also a pleasure to
welcome students into my office who
are here by choice, and not because
they’ve done something wrong.” ■

lesson plans and resources for classroom use. All lesson
plans could be modified to match individual standards for
all grade levels. Additional resources and read aloud texts

“Inferring Through the Arts”
T eachers, like students, never stop learning. Anthony V.
Ceres teachers are certainly no exception. Recently
teachers were offered “Inferring Through the Arts,” a
unique workshop created by Ceres Reading Specialist
Leanne Cosentino.
“My idea was to introduce participant teachers to
multi-sensory approaches to instruct students in inferential thinking skills,” she said. “A motivating way to do this
is through the use of the arts in all the content areas.”
The workshop was designed to demonstrate how the
arts can open new doors to help students learn complex
strategies necessary to comprehend text. The compelling
technique is meant to help students understand the
concept of inferring through multi-media strategies, and
better enable them to transfer this strategy to text.
Workshop facilitators guided teachers in interactive,
student-centered learning activities useful for classroom
application.
For example, teachers learned how to introduce
“feeling words” to K-1 students using a “Color Collage.”
They also learned techniques for using music to generate
inferential thinking. In addition, the popular Harry Potter
series also became a teaching tool, with teachers making
use of the beloved characters of Hogwarts to infer
meanings of content area terms.
“The model presented in this workshop is a sample of
motivational lessons we can use to help our students learn
and achieve higher levels of success,” said Mrs. Cosentino.
“Integrating the arts into our lessons can help us to better

American Education Week
E
ach year in November, schools
across America celebrate American
Education Week. Each year, Edward
J. Patten School’s Home-School
Relations Committee plans several
events that allow parents to participate in a variety of activities during
that week. Education in Action was
the theme for this year’s activities.
An open invitation was presented
for parents to not only attend the
meeting of the Home-School
Relations Committee, but to
encourage more parental participation at the planning and advocacy
level. Parents were also invited to the
meeting of the school’s Nutrition
Committee to join other parent and
staff committee members to discuss
school and family nutrition issues.
During the school’s celebration of
the “Day of the Young Reader” in the
Parent Library / Literacy Center,
parents were given gift bags with
various prizes, small gifts, reading
incentives and books to share with
their children. In addition, parents
were able to view the education
process as “silent observers” during
classroom instruction, or participate
in classroom projects as part of the
week’s activities.
The highlight of the week was the
Parent-Student Luncheon, where
over 200 parents had the opportunity
to have the school lunch with their
child and watch their recess
activities.
Two workshops were also presented during the week. There was a
workshop for parents on language
development, outlining strategies and
techniques for helping children build
vocabulary, and a family workshop,
New Horizons in Science, where
families worked together on science
projects and experiments.
The week’s activities ended with
the Saturday Morning Family School’s
annual Thanksgiving Luncheon,

which was a covered dish event
attended by over 250 of the program’s participants and staff members.
This year nearly 500 parents,
guardians and adult family members
attended Edward J. Patten School’s
American Education Week activities.
It was indeed a great success. ■

to avoid gang pressure and youth
violence. The G.R.E.A.T (Gang
Resistance Education and Training)
Program continues to improve, now in
its third year.
“This is my first year at McGinnis,
and I have already noticed that
students have shown an increased
interest in school,” said Ana Maria
Mascenik, McGinnis School Principal.
“It has had and continues to have a
significant impact.”
“The G.R.E.A.T program inspires
students to become positive role
models,” said Lorraine Morgan, Shull
School Principal. “ It also enhances
their ability to avoid negative peer
influences, while exhibiting leadership
and respect for their school
environment.”
Under the instruction of officers
from the Perth Amboy Police
Department, 7th grade students at both
middle schools are presented with a
skills-based curriculum designed to
produce knowledge and attitudinal and
behavioral changes through the use of
facilitative teaching, positive behavior
rehearsal, cooperative and interactive
learning techniques, and extended
teacher activities. The curriculum has
integrated National Learning English
Language Arts Standards and National
Health Standards and is based on
effective research practices.
“Children also have the opportunity
to look beyond the badge and see that
we are a human being just like
everyone else,” said Officer Lisa Capo,
G.R.E.A.T. instructor at the Shull
School. “Interacting with kids is great
because they are our future.”
At the end of January approximately 375 McGinnis and 310 Shull
School students graduated from the
