I
n the Greek, evangelion, or Gospel, means “good news”. For the ancient Greeks, this word was used especially
after news of a victory. This proves a truly appropriate and fitting word for us to remember, and to pray over,
even today. It may be hard, to remember in times of trial or difficulties (personally and in the bigger picture), that we
have already won, we have achieved victory, in Christ and in God’s ultimate plan of salvation. This “Gospel”, this
good news, is Jesus Christ himself (Mk 1:1), and it’s something that we as Christians always have to remember, Jesus
won the victory over death, and he’s given us a share in eternal life; in other words, we’re gonna be ok!
St. Paul, who experienced and knew this firsthand, lived his life trying to give this Good News that he received to
every person he could meet, going on missionary journeys and being persecuted and jailed (and even shipwrecked!
Acts 27:27-32). If you look at his Letter to the Ephesians (particularly the readings from this weekend Eph 2:13-18),
you’ll see how he describes Christ as our “peace”, and how he broke down “the dividing wall of enmity”, and it is
because of Christ that we have peace, and reconciliation to the Father, and basically, to every other good thing under
the heavens. It is through Christ that we “have access in one Spirit to the Father”. What is St. Paul saying? Chin up,
Christians, look at all that we have, and all we have been given, this is not a time for mourning, but for rejoicing,
Christ is the Good News!
I am purposefully focusing on this message of the Good News, not just in response to all of the developments
here in our own country, and the things that are going on throughout the world, but in response to the despair that
can set in each of our individual hearts. There is so much that we have to worry about, be sad, angry, disappointed,
frustrated with, etc., but there is so much more to be happy, enthusiastic, joyful about. Remember the meaning of
the word Gospel, that it means Good News, and that is what you hear from the pulpit every Sunday, the Good News.
Listen to the words from Isaiah (61:1), “he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners…” This is what Christ has done for us,
listen to Isaiah, listen to Paul, and most especially, listen to Christ: “I have said this to you, so that in me you may
have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world! (Jn 16:33)”.

n el idioma griego, evangelion, o Evangelio, significa "buena noticia". Para los antiguos griegos, esta palabra
se utilizaba sobre todo después de la noticia de una victoria. Esto demuestra una palabra verdaderamente
adecuada y apropiada para nosotros recordar y orar más, incluso hoy en día. Puede ser difícil recordar en los
momentos de prueba o dificultad (personalmente y en el cuadro más grande), que ya hemos ganado, ya hemos
logrado la victoria, en Cristo y en el plan de Dios de la salvación. ¡Este "Evangelio", esta buena noticia, es Jesucristo
mismo (Mc 1: 1), y es algo que nosotros como cristianos siempre tenemos que recordar, Jesús ganó la victoria sobre la
muerte, y Él nos ha dado una participación en la vida eterna; en otras palabras, vamos a estar bien!
San Pablo, quien vivió y experimento esto personalmente, vivió su vida tratando de difundir esta buena nueva
que él había recibido a todas las personas que pudiera encontrarse, haciendo viajes misioneros y siendo perseguido y
encarcelado (e incluso náufrago Hechos 27: 27-32). Si nos fijamos en su Carta a los Efesios (en particular, las lecturas
de este fin de semana Efesios 2: 13-18), verás cómo describe a Cristo como nuestra "paz", y cómo derribó "el muro que
los separaba de la enemistad", y es por causa de Cristo que tenemos paz y reconciliación con el Padre, y básicamente,
con cualquier cosa debajo de los cielos. Es a través de Cristo que "tenemos entrada por un mismo Espíritu al Padre".
¿Qué está diciendo San Pablo? ¡La barbilla hacia arriba cristianos, mira todo lo que tenemos, y todo lo que se nos ha
dado, este no es un tiempo de luto, sino de regocijo, Cristo es la Buena Nueva!
Estoy decididamente enfocado en este mensaje de la Buena Nueva, no sólo en respuesta a todos los desarrollos
aquí en nuestro propio país, y las cosas que están sucediendo en todo el mundo, pero en respuesta a la desesperación
que se puede establecer en cada uno de nuestros corazones. Hay tantas cosas en las cuales tenemos que
preocuparnos, estar triste, enojado, decepcionado, frustrado, etc., pero hay muchas cosas más para ser feliz,
entusiasta, alegre. Recuerden el significado de la palabra Evangelio, que significa Buena Nueva, y eso es lo que
ustedes escuchan desde el púlpito cada domingo, la Buena Nueva. Escuchen las palabras de Isaías (61: 1) ", me ha
enviado para dar la buena nueva a los oprimidos, a unir a los quebrantados de corazón, a proclamar la libertad a los
cautivos y la liberación a los prisioneros..." Esto es lo que Cristo ha hecho por nosotros, escuchen a Isaías, escuchen a
Pablo, y muy especialmente, escuchen a Cristo: " He dicho esto a ustedes, para que en mí tengáis paz. En el mundo se
enfrentan a la persecución. ¡Pero tened valor; Yo he vencido al mundo! (Jn 16:33)”.

here’s a bit of a “missing link” in the first two
sentences of today’s Gospel from Mark. In the
first, the apostles return from having been sent out on
mission two by two (“one who is sent” is the meaning
of “apostle”). Their instructions were to preach
repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in
Jesus’ name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to
come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice
for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a
look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face
of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his
name, and how they didn’t have to shake the dust off
their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not
be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as
the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing,
allowing the Lord to hear what we’ve sought to do in
his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get
away with him for a while to be fortified for further
work in God’s name. For we, the baptized, are not only
the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power
of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ,
the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world.

l evangelista Mateo (14:21) recuenta que cuando Jesús
multiplicó los panes, dio de comer a “unos cinco mil
hombres, sin contar las mujeres y los niños”. Este pequeño
detalle lo tiene sólo él. Mateo escribió su Evangelio para los
cristianos de origen judío, por lo cual contiene muchos
detalles que solamente reconocen aquellas personas de
origen judío. Por ejemplo, el detalle acerca del número y la
clasificación de personas que comieron del pan
multiplicado. En aquella época, la religión judía sólo
permitía la participación del varón. Las mujeres y los niños
no contaban para el culto, ni en la toma de decisiones en la
casa. Por lo tanto, al subrayar la presencia de las mujeres y
los niños, Mateo indica que en la Iglesia o comunidad
cristiana, las mujeres y los niños participan activamente.
También ellos comen y reciben de la bondad de Jesús. Esto
engrandece la maravilla del milagro, porque el número de
personas que comieron se multiplica. Pero más importante
aún, subraya la apertura de la comunidad nueva,
instaurada por Jesús, la Iglesia, donde ni mujeres ni niños

III. ECOLOGICAL CONVERSION
216. The rich heritage of Christian spirituality, the fruit of twenty centuries of personal and communal experience, has a precious
contribution to make to the renewal of humanity. Here, I would like to offer Christians a few suggestions for an ecological spirituality
grounded in the convictions of our faith, since the teachings of the Gospel have direct consequences for our way of thinking, feeling and
living. More than in ideas or concepts as such, I am interested in how such a spirituality can motivate us to a more passionate concern
for the protection of our world. A commitment this lofty cannot be sustained by doctrine alone, without a spirituality capable of
inspiring us, without an “interior impulse which encourages, motivates, nourishes and gives meaning to our individual and communal
activity”.[151] Admittedly, Christians have not always appropriated and developed the spiritual treasures bestowed by God upon the
Church, where the life of the spirit is not dissociated from the body or from nature or from worldly realities, but lived in and with them,
in communion with all that surrounds us.
217. “The external deserts in the world are growing, because the internal deserts have become so vast”.[152] For this reason, the
ecological crisis is also a summons to profound interior conversion. It must be said that some committed and prayerful Christians, with
the excuse of realism and pragmatism, tend to ridicule expressions of concern for the environment. Others are passive; they choose not
to change their habits and thus become inconsistent. So what they all need is an “ecological conversion”, whereby the effects of their
encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them. Living our vocation to be protectors of
God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.
218. In calling to mind the figure of Saint Francis of Assisi, we come to realize that a healthy relationship with creation is one dimension
of overall personal conversion, which entails the recognition of our errors, sins, faults and failures, and leads to heartfelt repentance
and desire to change. The Australian bishops spoke of the importance of such conversion for achieving reconciliation with creation:
“To achieve such reconciliation, we must examine our lives and acknowledge the ways in which we have harmed God’s creation through
our actions and our failure to act. We need to experience a conversion, or change of heart”.[153]
219. Nevertheless, self-improvement on the part of individuals will not by itself remedy the extremely complex situation facing our
world today. Isolated individuals can lose their ability and freedom to escape the utilitarian mindset, and end up prey to an unethical
consumerism bereft of social or ecological awareness. Social problems must be addressed by community networks and not simply by
the sum of individual good deeds. This task “will make such tremendous demands of man that he could never achieve it by individual
initiative or even by the united effort of men bred in an individualistic way. The work of dominating the world calls for a union of skills
and a unity of achievement that can only grow from quite a different attitude”.[154] The ecological conversion needed to bring about
lasting change is also a community conversion.
220. This conversion calls for a number of attitudes which together foster a spirit of generous care, full of tenderness. First, it entails
gratitude and gratuitousness, a recognition that the world is God’s loving gift, and that we are called quietly to imitate his generosity in
self-sacrifice and good works: “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing… and your Father who sees in secret will
reward you” (Mt 6:3-4). It also entails a loving awareness that we are not disconnected from the rest of creatures, but joined in a
splendid universal communion. As believers, we do not look at the world from without but from within, conscious of the bonds with
which the Father has linked us to all beings. By developing our individual, God-given capacities, an ecological conversion can inspire us
to greater creativity and enthusiasm in resolving the world’s problems and in offering ourselves to God “as a living sacrifice, holy and
acceptable” (Rom 12:1). We do not understand our superiority as a reason for personal glory or irresponsible dominion, but rather as a
different capacity which, in its turn, entails a serious responsibility stemming from our faith.
221. Various convictions of our faith, developed at the beginning of this Encyclical can help us to enrich the meaning of this conversion.
These include the awareness that each creature reflects something of God and has a message to convey to us, and the security that
Christ has taken unto himself this material world and now, risen, is intimately present to each being, surrounding it with his affection
and penetrating it with his light. Then too, there is the recognition that God created the world, writing into it an order and a dynamism
that human beings have no right to ignore. We read in the Gospel that Jesus says of the birds of the air that “not one of them is
forgotten before God” (Lk 12:6). How then can we possibly mistreat them or cause them harm? I ask all Christians to recognize and to
live fully this dimension of their conversion. May the power and the light of the grace we have received also be evident in our
relationship to other creatures and to the world around us. In this way, we will help nurture that sublime fraternity with all creation
which Saint Francis of Assisi so radiantly embodied.
To the Parish Family of Little Flower,
As many of you are aware, as a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Miami, I have been serving here at
Little Flower for almost a year now as part of my Pastoral Year in priestly formation – an “internship” year
completed the year before a seminarian’s ordination to the diaconate. As my time here comes to a close, I
wanted to take the opportunity once more to thank all the priests – especially our pastor, Fr. Davis – the
staff, and all the parishioners of the parish for the wealth of prayers, kindness, guidance and support that
I have been graced to receive throughout this year. It has truly been a privilege and a blessing to serve
you all during my time here at Little Flower. This Sunday I will be beginning a time of retreat and
vacation, after which I will be returning to the parish briefly in August before heading back to the
seminary in Boynton Beach to continue my studies. Nevertheless, I wanted to assure you all of my
continued prayers and I ask that you also continue to keep my brother seminarians and I in your prayers.

Part of creating a welcoming, helpful, smooth-flowing, and
efficient liturgy each Sunday is as a result of having the able help
of parish USHERS. They assist in so many important ways. Not
only do they provide ministry in action, ushers help set the tone
of welcome and good order in the liturgical assembly. The truth
is, we need many more ushers at the Church of the Little Flower. Of particular
note, we need assistance at the Saturday 5:00pm, Sunday 5:30pm, and the Sunday
night 7:00pm liturgies. If you might consider adding your name to the ranks of
our parish ushers, please contact Cecilia Miyar in our Ministries Office. There will
be an usher training session scheduled for Wednesday, August 26th at 7:30pm in
