From the Pastor
A story is told of a man who had been praying to win the
Lotto. One day his prayer was answered. When he woke
up, there on the bedside table was a newspaper one
week in advance. And the winning numbers were there $200 million dollars. Excited he began to read the future
events. But as he turned the pages, he was filled with
shock – there on the obituary page was his name. He
would die the day he won the lottery – a dead
millionaire.
The parable in today’s gospel is something similar. A
rich man who had a very good harvest, who believed he
had his future secure, who planned to take it easy and
enjoy life, ‘eat, drink and be merry.’ But as the gospel
tells us, that very night his life would be demanded of
him.
This is what the first reading is telling us, that life is
fleeting, that one day we shall die. And the things we
accumulated and worked for – things we thought could
buy us happiness and security – we will leave them all
behind. Vanity of vanities!
But we easily take this for granted. Like the rich man
we fall into the trap of believing that life and happiness
consists of possessions. That is why we want to
accumulate and accumulate, we become greedy and
materialistic. Everybody wants to be a millionaire.
Of course it is not surprising. Money is powerful.
Indeed for many it’s no longer the biblical teaching that
says, “For one who has faith, nothing is impossible,” but
rather, “For one who has money, nothing is
impossible.” Which seems to be true – but only up to a
point. The rich man in today’s gospel could not buy the
next day’s sunrise.
In his apostolic exhortation ‘Joy of the Gospel,’ Pope
Francis writes, “We have created new idols. The
worship of the golden calf has returned in a new and
ruthless guise in the idolatry of money and the
dictatorship of an impersonal economy lacking a truly
human purpose.”
That is why Jesus warns against all greed. To be
wealthy is not wrong, to have money is a blessing. But
the question is “Are we rich in what matters to God?”
In other words do we use our money only for ourselves
without sharing with those in need, without using it to
advance God’s kingdom of love and truth, justice and
peace? Do we think only of what is below without lifting
our minds to the things above? (2nd reading) Otherwise,
It will indeed be vanity of vanities!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
That we remember that the many possessions we strive to acquire
are worthless in the eyes of the Lord. “Take care to guard against
all greed, for though may be rich, one’s life does not consist of
possessions.” Luke 12:15 The Gospel message is so contrary to
our modern culture where advertising continually tries to
convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus
showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He
challenges us not to store up or hoard material possessions, but
rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

Para que podamos recordar que todos los bienes que nos
esforzamos para adquirir no tienen nigún valor a los ojos del
Señor. “Tenga cuidado de evitar toda codicia, porque aunque uno
puede ser rico, la vida de cada uno no consiste en posesiones.”

nuestra cultura moderna donde la publicidad continuamente trata
de convencernos de que nuestro valor reside en las cosas que
poseemos. Jesús nos mostró que nuestro verdadero valor radica
en la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas. Él nos desafía a no
almacenar o acumular posesiones materials, sino más bien a vivir
un estilo de vida agradecido y generoso.

La parábola en el evangelio de hoy es bastante parecida. Un

disfrutar la vida, ‘comer, beber y estar feliz.’ Pero, como nos

dice el evangelio, esa misma noche iba a perder la vida.
Esto es lo que la primera lectura nos está diciendo, esa vida es
breve, que un día moriremos. Y las cosas por las que hemos
trabajado y acumulado – cosas que pensamos nos podrían
comprar felicidad y seguridad – las dejaremos todas atrás.
¡Vanidad de vanidades!
Pero nosotros lo tomamos facilmente por dado. Como el
hombre rico que cayó en la trampa de creer que la vida y la
felicidad consiste en posesiones materiales. Eso es el porqué
queremos acumular y acumular, nos convertimos en
codiciosos y materialistas. Todos quieren ser un millonario.
Por supuesto no es de sorprenderse. El dinero es poderoso.
Verdaderamente para muchos ya no es la enseñanza bíblica
que dice, “Para alguien que tiene fe, nada es imposible,” sino
en su lugar, “Para alguien que tiene dinero, nada es
imposible.” Que parece ser cierto – pero hasta cierto punto.
El hombre rico en el evangelio de hoy no podrá comprar el
siguiente amanecer.
En su exhortación apostólica ‘La Alegría del Evangelio,’ el
Papa Francisco escribe, “Nosotros hemos creado nuevos
ídolos. La adoración del becerro de oro ha vuelto bajo una
nueva y despiadada apariencia en la idolatría del dinero y en
la dictadura de una economía impersonal sin tener
verdaderos propósitos humanos.”
Por eso es que Jesús nos advierte contra toda avaricia. El ser
adinerado no es inapropiado, el tener dinero es una
bendición. Pero la pregunta es ¿Sómos ricos en lo que
importa a Dios?” En otras palabras, ¿usamos nuestro dinero
solamente en nosotros sin compartir con aquellos con
necesidad? ¿sin usarlo para avanzar hacia el Reino de Dios de
amor, justicia y paz? ¿Pensamos solamente en lo que está
abajo sin levantar nuestras mentes hacia las cosas de arriba?
(2da lectura) De otra manera, será verdaderamente ¡Vanidad
de vanidades!
