We made it through another year, hope you had a refreshing winter break and that you are energized for the next phase of our learning journey together. We are looking forward to seeing you out at the upcoming events and programs. Your child’s safety is important and we wish everyone a pleasant and safe library experience, all children aged 7 and under must be accompanied by a responsible person at least 13 years old and must be within visual contact of caregiver. HOMEBOUND SERVICE What is Homebound Service? Providing delivery of library materials free-ofcharge to Markham & Posen residents who are physically unable to visit the library. Who is eligible for this service? Homebound is available to those who: Have health issues that keeps them from the library. Residents of the Markham & Posen Community. A valid Markham Library Card. What materials can be borrowed? Large print or regular books, DVDs, CDs, audio books and playaways. For more information, please contact the library at 708-331-0130. TAX FORMS AVAILABLE Markham Public Library Supports Live Tutors! Zumba Kids, Tuesdays @ 5:30pm, January 8, 15, 22, & 29, 2013 National staying Healthy Month is January, join the party as we Zumba to the DVD. Children ages 7 - 18 are welcomed. Animeiacs, 1st Wednesdays @ 6pm Hey Anime fans, learn about the Japanese Culture, discuss the meaning of manga and create anime characters. Teens 13 & up are welcomed. Starting February 6th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, January 12th @ 2pm It’s a celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. We are celebrating through stories, crafts, skits and fun, also recap the “I Have a Dream” Speech and discuss what are your dreams. Be Our Valentine, February 14th @ 5:30 pm Valentine’s day @ the library! Enjoy a story, crafts, tasty treats and other fun activities. Registration is required. African Mask Making, February 19th @ 5:30pm Come design, create and make your very own African Mask. Children ages 7 & up. Dr. Seussville, March 5th @ 5:30pm We are celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday in a Dr. Seuss way, with his famous stories, wacky games and creative crafts. All ages Luck of the Irish, March 9th @ 2pm Follow the rainbow to the library as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by reading Irish Folk Tales, learning the St. Patrick’s Day history, fun activities & Irish crafts. American Girl (Girls on Fire) March 19th @ 5:30pm In honor of Women’s Month, come learn the popularity and stories behind the American Girl doll line. There will be crafts, games and snacks, children do not have to bring a doll or books in order to participate. Ages 7-12. Black History Inventions, February 7th @ 5:30pm Learn about inventions created by famous African Americans. African Folktales, February 27th @ 5:30pm Come hear cultural folktales told from legends that make up our African American History. Easter Eggstravaganza March 30th @ 2pm Hop on by the library for an Easter eggstravaganza! This eggstrarodinary event will host fun crafts and games for every bunny! “SPRING BREAK MOVIES” Spend your spring break at the movies! Markham Public Library will be playing movies in the large meeting room on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday @ 3pm during spring break! All ages are welcome. FREE popcorn will be provided! Earth Day, April 23rd @ 5:30pm Explore how we can get involved with the environmental movement by learning how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We will be making a vase with flowers using paper. January 17th: Madagascar 3 February 21st: The Great Debaters March 21st: Brave April 18th: Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie will start on time and you may bring your own snacks. A tablet is a mobile hand held computer with a touch screen. Tablets has many different brands on the market today, which makes them more useful in numerous of fields such as education, business, medical and many more. IRIS READING PRESENTS…. Speed Reading 101, January 16th @ 5:30pm Are you behind in your reading? This speed-reading workshop will cover techniques to help you read more in less time. You’ll learn, how to get an immediate boost in your reading speed and how to improve comprehension and retention. Memory Improvement, February 5th @ 5:30pm Do you have trouble remembering what you read? This workshop will help you learn memory techniques to help you remember the things you commonly forget. Black History Bingo, February 9th @ 2pm Celebrate Black History by playing Bingo with people, places and facts about African American History Month. All ages are welcomed, registration is required. Women Empowerment, March 7th @ 6pm In honor of Women’s Month, Brenda Leggins will educate and empower WOMEN with the skills and confidence to create and regain a healthy life. Saturday: Balloon Art @ 2pm Page 3 Page 4 Mobile Hot Spot Markham Public Library Bookmobile travels throughout the city of Markham and Posen bringing the library to schools, daycare centers, neighborhood and businesses. Parents we will be making stops at some of the local schools during school hours. In order for students to check out items they must have a valid library card. We encourage you to apply for a library card for your child so they can experience Markham’s first Bookmobile. Let’s all work together to continue to make the Bookmobile a success!
