Happy New Year! Today we begin a new liturgical year. I still remember
the excitement and joy that I experienced when I discovered our Liturgical
Year and the way our Lectionary (book we use to read Scripture at Mass)
is arranged. It was a moment that allowed me to appreciate even more the
Holy Mass and the wisdom of our Catholic Church. The Lectionary is
arranged in two cycles, one for Sundays and one for
weekdays. The Sunday cycle is divided into three years, A, B, and C. In
Year A, we read mostly from the Gospel of Matthew. In Year B, we read
the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. In Year C, we
read the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel of John is read during the Easter
season in all three years. The weekday cycle is divided into two years, Year
I and Year II. Year I is read in odd-numbered years (2013, 2015, 2017, etc.)
and Year II is used in even-numbered years (2012, 2014, 2016, etc.) The
Gospels for both years I & II are the same. For us Catholics the liturgical
year is not just a way of counting time, but is the way we live our faith and
celebrate the mysteries of our salvation. As we begin this New Year I
invite you to celebrate the mysteries of our faith by being more attentive in
listening to the Word of God given to us through Sacred Scripture during
Mass. Happy New Liturgical Year! A blessed Advent season!

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Hoy comenzamos un nuevo año litúrgico. Aún recuerdo la
emoción y la alegría que experimenté cuando descubrí nuestro Año Litúrgico y la
forma en que el Leccionario (el libro que usamos para leer la Escritura durante la
misa) está organizado. Ese momento me permitió apeciar aún más la Santa
Misa y la sabiduría de nuestra Madre la Iglesia. El Leccionario está organizado
en dos ciclos, uno para los domingos y uno para los días de semana. El ciclo
dominical está dividido en tres años, A, B y C. Durante el Año A leemos
mayormente del Evangelio de Mateo. En el Año B leemos el Evangelio de Marcos
y el capítulo 6 del Evangelio de Juan. Durante el Año C leemos el Evangelio de
Lucas. El Evangelio de Juan se lee en cada uno de los tres años durante el
Tiempo Pascual. El ciclo semanal está dividido en dos años, Año I y Año II. El Año
I se usa en años impares (2013, 2015, 2017, etc.) y el Año II en los años pares
(2012, 2014, 2016, etc.) Los Evangelios para ambos años son siempre los
mismos. Para nosotros los católicos el año litúrgico no es solo una manera de
calcular el tiempo; es la manera en que vivimos nuestra fe y celebramos los
misterios de nuestra salvación. Al comenzar este nuevo año los invito a celebrar
los misterios de nuestra fe escuchando con más atención la Palabra de Dios que
se nos entrega através de la Sagrada Escritura durante la misa. ¡Feliz Nuevo Año
Litúrgico! ¡Que el Tiempo de Adviento sea lleno de bendiciones!

The Church marked off not only the days of his life, but of
our life today. For Jesus is the… “firstborn of many brethren” (Rom 8:29).
Those terms imply that others, many others, are to follow; and so the Church
proved this claim by celebrating the feasts of the saints, beginning with the
Blessed Virgin Mary, but including the apostles, martyrs and many others.
The year, as it has developed, is, like a microscope or telescope, a finely tuned
instrument for keeping its object always in focus, always near; and its object is
Jesus Christ.
In the course of the liturgical year, Christians receive repeated exposure to
the major events of salvation history. The cycle brings times of fasting and
times of feasting, times of sorrow and times of joy, times of penance and times
of reconciliation. All creation tells the story. All history tells the story. All our
lives, yours and mine, tell the story.
It is a story of hope.

Saints this Week/Santos de la Semana
November 30th, St. Andrew. Andrew, born in Bethsaida,
was a disciple of John the Baptist before he became a
follower of Christ, to whom he also brought his brother
Peter. With Philip he presented the Greeks to Christ and,
before the miracle in the desert, it was Andrew who
pointed out to Christ the boy carrying the loaves and
fishes. After Pentecost he preached the Gospel in many
lands and was put to death by crucifixion in Achaia.
Noviembre 30, San Andrés. Andrés, nacido en Betsaida, fue
primeramente discípulo de Juan Bautista, siguió después a
Cristo y le presentó también a su hermano Pedro. Él y Felipe
son los que llevaron ante Jesús a unos griegos, y el propio
Andrés fue el que hizo saber a Cristo que había un muchacho
que tenía unos panes y unos peces. Según la tradición, Después
de Pentecostés predicó el Evangelio en muchas regiones y fue
crucificado en Acaya.
December 3rd, St. Francis Xavier. A founding member of the
Jesuit Order, Francis Xavier preached the Gospel to the peoples
of the East. In India, Francis touched the hearts of the natives with
his poverty. But in Japan, where the daimyo demanded formality, he
approached suitably dressed as an ambassador. In ten short years,
Francis established missions in India, Ceylon, Malacca, and Japan.
He died near the coast of China in 1552.

Today, on the First Sunday of Advent, we begin a new
liturgical year; that is, a new journey of the People of
God with Jesus Christ, our Shepherd, who guides us
through history toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of
God…This journey never comes to an end. Just as in each
of our lives we always need to begin again, to get up
again, to rediscover the meaning of the goal of our lives,
so also for the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the
common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! …
The season of Advent, which we begin again today, restores this horizon of
hope, a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God’s Word. A
hope which does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints!

Comenzamos hoy, primer domingo de Adviento, un nuevo año litúrgico, es
decir un nuevo camino del Pueblo de Dios con Jesucristo, nuestro Pastor, que
nos guía en la historia hacia la realización del Reino de Dios…Este camino no se
acaba nunca. Así como en la vida de cada uno de nosotros siempre hay
necesidad de comenzar de nuevo, de volver a levantarse, de volver a encontrar
el sentido de la meta de la propia existencia, de la misma manera para la gran
familia humana es necesario renovar siempre el horizonte común hacia el cual
estamos encaminados. ¡El horizonte de la esperanza! …El tiempo de Adviento,
que hoy de nuevo comenzamos, nos devuelve el horizonte de la esperanza,
una esperanza que no decepciona porque está fundada en la Palabra de Dios.
Una esperanza que no decepciona, sencillamente porque el Señor no
decepciona jamás.

Evening Under the Stars was a huge success!!! The students enjoyed this
storytelling time with our 8th grade volunteers! They sat on comfortable
blankets in front of the church under the beautiful nighttime sky while listening
to stories!
A very SPECIAL THANKS to our teachers Ms. Sanchez and Mrs. Janulionis
for helping organize this event!!

On Thursday, November 17, St. Hugh students and faculty celebrated the feast day of Saint
Hugh with the annual field day where they enjoyed a day of sports and friendly competition.

This was a fun activity for the students to
see what an election is like. The students
made patriotic headbands and read and colored
a book all about elections. They learned the
election process of going into a private booth
and making their choice and receiving a sticker
once they voted. They also learned that the
winner of the Presidential Election becomes our
president and gets to live in the White House!
