As a creative space dedicated by the Lisbon City Council to graffiti and Street Art,GAU, Galeria de Arte Urbana(Urban Art Gallery),
henceforth designated by GAU, has been evolving as the main platform for the action in these plastic universes that nowadays
mark so deeply and transversely the public space of globalised cities. Being part of the Department of Cultural Heritage, GAU has
designed a strategy not only to safeguard this ephemeral art in the form of visual records (photographs and videos), but also to
promote urban art, addressing finally a necessity identified earlier
The priority has been given to implement a strategy designed both to prevent the emergence of vandal interventions, and to
confirm graffiti and street art as recognisable and recognised expressions of urban art, as a global artistic sub-culture present in
cities worldwide, by giving them not only space, but also proper time for creation. As a distinct identity trace for forthcoming
generations, this artistic and cultural heritage is worth to safeguard by their recognition and affirmation as creative records that can
emerge, be visible and coexist graciously and harmoniously in the public sphere, exhibiting a group of creators traditionally
relegated to the margins of illegality and invisibility. To GAU it has been important to start a dialog with this artistic community
gathered around graffiti and street art not only to highlight the importance of artistic and cultural heritage safeguarding principles
and attitudes, but most importantly to allow the space and the time to legally expand the full potential of their artistic expression.

Como espacio creativo exclusivo designado por el Municipio de Lisboa para el grafiti y el Arte Callejero, la Galería de Arte
Urbana, en adelante GAU, ha evolucionado como la principal plataforma para la acción en estos universos plásticos que hoy en
día marcan tan profunda y transversalmente el espacio público de las ciudades globalizadas. Al ser parte del Departamento de
Patrimonio Cultural, la GAU ha diseñado una estrategia no solo para salvaguardar este arte efímero en formato de registro visual
(fotografías y vídeos), sino también para promover el arte urbano, abordando finalmente una necesidad previamente identificada.
Se le ha dado prioridad a la implementación de una estrategia diseñada para prevenir el surgimiento de intervenciones
vandálicas y para confirmar el grafiti y el arte callejero como expresiones reconocibles y reconocidas del arte urbano, como una
subcultura artística mundial presente en las ciudades de todo el mundo, dándoles no solo un espacio, sino también un tiempo
adecuado para la creación. Como rasgo de identidad distintivo para futuras generaciones, vale la pena salvaguardar este
patrimonio artístico y cultural, reconociéndolo y afirmándolo como registros creativos que pueden emerger, ser visibles y coexistir
gentil y armoniosamente en la esfera pública, exhibiendo a un grupo de creadores tradicionalmente relegados a las márgenes de
la ilegalidad y la invisibilidad. La GAU ha sido importante para iniciar un diálogo con esta comunidad artística reunida en torno al
grafiti y al arte callejero, no solo para resaltar la importancia de los principios y actitudes de protección del patrimonio artístico y
cultural, sino aún más importante, para posibilitar el espacio y el tiempo para ampliar legalmente el potencial completo de sus
expresiones artísticas.

La GAU, Galeria de Arte Urbana (galerie d’art urbain) est un espace créatif accordé par la ville de Lisbonne au graffiti et à l’art
urbain ; celle qu’on appelle également GAU évolue pour devenir la plateforme principale de ces univers plastiques qui marquent
de nos jours si profondément et transversalement l’espace public des villes mondialisées. Faisant partie du département
d’héritage culturel, la GAU a élaboré une stratégie non seulement pour préserver cet art éphémère sous forme d’archives
visuelles (photos et vidéos) mais également dans l’idée de promouvoir l’art urbain en répondant à une nécessité identifiée par le
passé.
La priorité a été donnée à la mise en œuvre d’une stratégie conçue pour prévenir l’émergence du vandalisme et pour confirmer le
graffiti et l’art de la rue comme un art reconnaissable et une expression reconnue de l’art urbain, comme sous-culture artistique
mondiale présente dans les villes du monde, en lui donnant un espace, mais également du temps pour la création. En tant que
trace identitaire distincte pour les générations à venir, cet héritage artistique et culturel doit être sauvegardé par sa
reconnaissance et l’affirmation d’archives créatives émergentes, visibles et qui peuvent coexister avec grâce et harmonie au sein
de la sphère publique, en présentant un groupe de créateurs traditionnellement relégué aux marges de l’illégalité et de
l’invisibilité. Il est important pour GAU de démarrer un dialogue avec cette communauté artistique réunie autour des graffiti et de
l’art de la rue, non pas seulement pour mettre en avant l’importance de principes et d’attitudes de préservation de l’héritage
culturel et artistique, mais surtout pour donner de l’espace et du temps pour élargir légalement le potentiel complet de leur
expression artistique.
