To him be honor and eternal power. Amen. Gospel Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with. Responsorial Ps PS.146:7, 8- 9, 9- 10 R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Blessed he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Reading 2 1 T M 6:11- 16 But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords, LK 16:19-31 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’” Praying the rosary We are praying the Holy Rosary ½ hour before every Mass. Please come and join us. 0239- St. Joseph- 3|Page WORD OF LIFE “TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN” (Luke 16, 27-31) The parable of the rich man and the poor Lazarus may be especially useful to those who say that if they do not see a miracle they will not convert. In the Gospel parable they are given the answer that they deserve: “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t do it even if they resurrect someone dead”. In reality, life is continually giving us occasions to convert and to be grateful. The answer to the “word of life” for this week will consist precisely in examining these revelations of the love of God to take advantage of what has already been given us and, from there, fill our hearts with gratitude. We will do it establishing what would happen if we didn’t have the health that we have, although this isn’t full. Or what would we do if we weren’t in the economic situation that we are in, or if our friends stopped loving us, or if our family members died, or if our family wasn’t a happy home. It is possible that one or another of the aforementioned things is missing for us and that the pain and even the bitterness are ruining our lives. We must then remember that perhaps something that we are now missing, at one time we had, and that there are many other things for which we can be grateful to God and our fellowman. If we don’t give thanks for what we have been given, what right do we have to complain about what we don’t have? Won’t our complaints, lacking in gratitude, be what invites who has given us all to take away what remains, since we value it so little that we complain? Intention: Examine the reasons for thankfulness, beginning with love of God, and be conscious through our behavior with the gratitude owed the Lord and our fellowman. OUR FAITH COMPENDIUM OF THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 27. What does it mean in practice for a person to believe in God? It means to adhere to God himself, entrusting oneself to him and giving assent to all the truths which God has revealed because God is Truth. It means to believe in one God in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 28. What are the characteristics of faith? Faith is the supernatural virtue which is necessary for salvation. It is a free gift of God and is accessible to all who humbly seek it. The act of faith is a human act, that is, an act of the intellect of a person - prompted by the will moved by God - who freely assents to divine truth. Faith is also certain because it is founded on the Word of God; it works “through charity” (Galatians 5:6); and it continually grows through listening to the Word of God and through prayer. It is, even now, a foretaste of the joys of heaven. 29. Why is there no contradiction between faith and science? Though faith is above reason, there can never be a contradiction between faith and science because both originate in God. It is God himself who gives to us the light both of reason and of faith A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters Is it morally permissible to vote for all candidates of a single party? This would depend on the positions held by the candidates of a single party. If anyone or more of them advocated positions that were opposed to the natural moral law, then it would not be morally permissible to vote for all candidates of this one party. Your correctly informed conscience transcends the bounds of any one political party. CAP REGARDING VIOLENCE OVER THE PAST WEEKEND “Combine easy access to guns with a culture that breeds resentment, self-focus, personal license and contempt for human life and the law, and what you get is what happened over the past weekend: the terrible shootings of innocent people by Nicholas Glenn and others. Taking away the guns – making them far more difficult to acquire – is the easy part, but it doesn’t begin to address the deeper moral and social dysfunctions of American urban life. Violence begins in the heart before the hand picks up a weapon. Violence is now part of the American Way from womb to tomb, and it should surprise no one when it hits home locally. I ask Catholics across the archdiocese to pray in the coming days for the victims of the weekend shootings and their families, and for leaders who can bring genuine peace to our community.”
