But this radical preference which affects even the closest relationships does not diminish the love we should have for our family members, our parents, siblings, husband or wife, children, etc. On the contrary, an absolute option for Jesus as our only Savior purifies our ability to love everybody, even those closest to us, because it sets a different standard. Christ Himself has renounced His own life by giving it up on the Cross for us. Thus the mention about the Cross, in order to walk with Jesus and be his disciple, we must first accept and take up our cross. This is nothing else than being ready to love others more than our own life itself. To love giving our life means to make a decision to love unconditionally, it means putting love above everything else. To prefer Jesus exclusively and unconditionally is to connect ourselves In point of fact, Jesus calls us to a to the source of Love, God Himself. radical, unconditional choice, putting To place Jesus in the forefront Him in the first place, at the summit of our affections and preference. Only in and choose Him above everything else this radical way is it possible to be a means to value more the treasure of relationships, like family ties, friendships, etc, than our own personal ideas, or money temptations, be it big or small, which we can’t take with us when we go. This should help us understand why, at the end oday’s Gospel passage begins with a statement that’s hard to understand. These words seem to contradict the spirit of the Gospel, focused as it is around the new commandment of LOVE. They also seem to go against the commandments of God’s law, especially the fourth one which calls us to “honor your father and your mother.” When listing conditions to become His disciples, Jesus explains that we need to “hate” father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, even our own life. The truth is that faith and love of Christ and God imply a conflict with human relationships, especially the closest relationships. Therefore, to choose faith in Christ and love of God makes us renounce, or at least move to the back burner, those around us. Teresa of Calcutta will be canonized today during a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis in Rome for the Jubilee of Volunteers and Workers of Mercy. of His call to a radical choice to be His disciples, Jesus also includes the call to renounce all our possessions. The path of following Jesus needs to be taken with a lot of care. In truth, we can only make it real when we have a living connection with Jesus, our Teacher who forms us, and with His grace and our cooperation helps us grow. We cannot learn to take up our own cross anywhere other than in the school of him who gave His life on the Cross, we cannot make an option for Christ if faith, prayer and the sacraments do not join us to Him who renounced His life out of love for humankind. Solomon tries to teach us something similar in the First Reading. Solomon, who is considered to be the wisest man, must acknowledge that all the human knowledge we accumulate with great effort, cannot compare to the wisdom God grants to those who are open to His teachings. And only from Him can we receive the wisdom that saves, the wisdom of love. I mentioned in the beginning that this apparent contradiction between loving Christ and loving “our people” is resolved when we understand that to prefer Jesus is the best way of loving in truth and selflessness our parents, children and siblings. Loving with the love of Jesus. Fr. Jose Gerardo Alberto, MSpS We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature -- trees, flowers, grass -- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence. We need silence to be able to touch souls. Wisdom: virtue and gift To be wise is not the same as to acquire scientific knowledge or to accumulate university degrees; it is neither about intellectual capacity nor about receiving the Nobel prize. The wisdom of which the Bible talks about—unlike the Greek wisdom—is the capacity to direct our own life, to carry out God’s plan, to be happy. This wisdom opposes foolishness, negligence, imprudence, evil, and lack of self-control. Wise people are at peace with themselves. They respect nature and take care of things; they live in harmony with others, know how to work well, and enjoy what they do. They enjoy a friendship with God and let themselves be led by Him. Because they have a deep knowledge of themselves and have reconciled with their shadow selves, and know how to listen without judging, wise people are capable of helping others to enter the mystery of their own self and to motivate those others to live wisely. Felix Rougier wrote this at the beginning of a letter: “(On the day of your Baptism) you entered the bosom of God’s Church and the Holy Spirit took possession of your soul.” Two things catch my attention in this quote: BAPTISM and POSSESSION. Through baptism we enter the Church. Since that blessed day we become active members of the Church. God has called us to be part of His mystical body. Each one of us, you and I, are members of GOD’S CHURCH. This is a great joy and source of much happiness. It helps us remember that God calls you freely to be a part of His church. But he wants you to be active, and not a passive member of His church. God wants you to be a builder of community. Last weekend I took part in a meeting of the Apostleship of the Cross. At this meeting there were representatives from all over the United States, and it was beautiful to see that we are all eager to build a stronger Church, to really become the priestly people and to help everybody fall in love with Jesus, so everybody can live their baptism to its fullness. There were 23 of us! The 23 of us felt that the Holy Spirit took possession of our souls. This quote from Fr. Felix the Holy Spirit took possession of your soul became a reality last weekend in all of us present at the meeting. But, to me, it is more important that it becomes a reality in you. THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT TAKE POSSESSION OF YOU. That you allow Him to enter the deepest part of your being, and that you allow Him to guide you, to move you, to transform you. I’d like for every man and woman in this parish to be possessed by the HOLY SPIRIT and to let Him help us turn our parish into a community where the LOVE OF JESUS reigns. Help me pray for that, and help me work to bring it to fruition. Help me to pray for the salvation of others the way Conchita did: Jesus, Savior of all people, save them! Pray with the Cross of the Apostolate and the prayer I shared with you a few weeks ago. P. I recited the cured but I already knew it strongly from us his love.” prayer of beatification and also what came what I had prayed to God through the Youth Ministry and the Challenges of today’s World My dear Brothers and Sisters, we are living a very crucial moment in a world where we are witnessing many changes and as a consequence we are facing many challenges that place us and our sons and daughters at risk, especially teens and young people. We are witnessing how “Young people are constantly being bombarded with images of alternative lifestyles from TV shows, movies, music, the Internet, and other media that reach out to them.” (Johnson, 83) All those challenges have to make us aware of how we may be able to transmit to the youth what Saint John writes: “I write to you, young people, because you are strong and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the evil one. Do not love the world or the things of the world…the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.” 1 John 2:14-17. As God’s community of SEAS are we prepared to present the Good News about Jesus Christ to them in a compelling way? I think that as a Church we are doing the effort to present to our teen and youth a safe place, a positive and nurturing environment where they can learn coping mechanisms to face the challenges of the world. We as families of Christ’s church have to react against the temptations that the world are offering our youth and we need to make time to pray for them and find spaces where they can be able to hear the answer to questions you as parents may not feel able to share with them. In this community of SEAS we care about your sons and daughters and offer them the tools they may need to exercise their love for God’s church and prepare themselves to spread the word of God to other youth, so together we may build God’s Kingdom in this world. Fr. Armando Hernandez, MSpS. Twenty-third Sunday, 09/04/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 9 A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness Mary, Mother and Model of Vocations “Every aspect of priestly formation can be referred to Mary, the human being who has responded better than any other to God’s call. Mary became both the servant and the disciple of the Word to the point of conceiving, in her heart and in her flesh, the Word made man, so as to give him to mankind. Mary was called to educate the one Eternal Priest, who became docile and subject to her motherly authority. With her example and intercession the Blessed Virgin keeps vigilant watch over the growth of vocations and priestly life in the Church.” Pope John Paul II, I Will Give You Shepherds, 1992. A VOCATION must be nurtured for a lifetime, not just until ordination or the taking of vows. You can help nurture the vocations of priests, sisters and brothers by praying, listening, and expressing appreciation. A life of service needs support from those served. Mary’s Fiat, her “Yes” at the time of Annunciation, is a wonderful model of the selfless response needed when the Lord calls someone to discernment to the religious life or the priesthood. There are many steps to that Discernment process, we just finished talking about the 7 Steps to Discernment according to Fr. Fernando Torre, MSpS. But two indispensable elements must be: an asnwer to the initial call, in profound faith and hope that God, the caring Father, knows best what we need; “keeping things in our heart”. There may arise doubts, concerns, joys!, in this process, it is important to keep communication with the Lord (and a Spiritual Director) open and prayerful.
