siglas en inglés) el miércoles, 9 de noviembre de
2016. Se les informará sobre Infraestructura de Rutas Personalizadas (Pathways Framework). La reunión tendrá lugar en
nuestra Sala de Conferencias (Lecture Hall) a partir de las 7 horas de la
noche. Si no puede asistir a esta reunión de PTO, habrá otra presentación sobre Rutas Personalizadas en el auditorio de la escuela Memorial
High School el 30 de noviembre de 2016 de 7 a 8:30 horas.
En nombre de los estudiantes, del personal y de la administración quiero expresar mi gratitud al West Side Rotary Club, a nuestra Organización de Padres y Maestros y a una familia donante anónima por la generosidad que han demostrado hacia nuestra escuela. Sus donaciones

NAMI Basics is a free, 6-week education program for parents and family caregivers of
children and teens who are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness or whom have
already been diagnosed. NAMI Basics is offered in a group setting so you can connect
with other people face-to-face.
You'll learn the facts about mental health conditions and how best to support your child at
home, at school and when they're getting medical care. Last year, 99% of participants
told us they would recommend the program to other parents.
The course is taught by a trained team with lived experience—they know what you're
going through because they've been there. The 6-session program provides critical
strategies for taking care of your child and learning the ropes of recovery.
What You’ll Gain
At NAMI Basics, you'll find out that you're not alone. Recovery is a journey, and there is
hope. The group setting of NAMI Basics provides mutual support and shared positive
impact—you can experience compassion and reinforcement from people who understand
your situation. You also can help others with your own experience.
NAMI Basics covers:

Managing crises, solving problems and communicating effectively
How to take care of yourself and handle stress
Developing the confidence and stamina to support your child with compassion
Advocating for your child's rights at school and in health care settings
Learning about current treatments, including evidence-based therapies,
medications and side effects
Gaining an overview of the public mental health care, school and juvenile justice
systems
Understanding the challenges and impact of mental health conditions on your
entire family

Atención a todos los Estudiantes Científicos: Grupo de Ciencias
El departamento de Aprendizaje Avanzado del Distrito Escolar Metropolitano de Madison (MMSD por sus siglas en
inglés) nuevamente se unirá al Instituto de Descubrimiento de Wisconsin (WID por sus siglas en inglés) en el campus de la Universidad de Wisconsin para ofrecer oportunidades únicas a los estudiantes que aprecian y tienen éxito
con las ciencias. Los estudiantes de Jefferson trabajarán en grupo con otros estudiantes del distrito en proyectos de
ciencias dirigidos por científicos en el Instituto de Descubrimiento de Wisconsin. Esta oportunidad se les ofrece a
todos los estudiantes de 7º y 8º en el distrito, pero los estudiantes tienen que completar una aplicación, la cual está
disponible en línea, debido a que hay un cupo limitado.
Hay dos tipos de grupos: Área y Distrito. Los estudiantes pueden aplicar a ambos con solo una aplicación, la cual
también incluye una recomendación de un maestro. Este año hay dos grupos de área disponibles para los estudiantes de 7º y 8º:
#1: Bioinformática
Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de conocer el nuevo campo científico de bioinformática
en el que se utilizan computación y programas de informática para analizar información
biológica. Durante este evento los estudiantes explorarán proteínas, se enterarán de como las
celdas mandan mensajes, analizarán grupos de datos y reconociendo patrones buscarán
soluciones para problemas biológicos (como cáncer).
#2: Robótica, Automatización e investigación de plantas
Los estudiantes explorarán cómo reaccionan las plantas en condiciones diferentes. Para realizar
este proyecto utilizarán robots programables que pueden automatizar la intensidad, el tipo y los
colores de la luz y también controlar el movimiento de las plantas simulando la gravedad de la
tierra. Habrá otras áreas de exploración también. Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de
diseñar un experimento, programar el robot, recolectar y analizar los datos y finalmente planear
las siguientes medidas.
El Grupo del Distrito solo está disponible para los estudiantes de 8º grado, y tiene un cupo límite de 16 estudiantes. El enfoque de este año será:
1. Las Superhéroes del Cuerpo: Aplicación de las Células Madre: los estudiantes investigarán el potencial de
las células madre en el campo de la ciencia, la salud humana, y el estudio de las enfermedades.
El Grupo del Distrito comenzará en enero y requerirá que los estudiantes asistan a WID 6 veces durante el año
escolar. El Grupo de Área comenzará en febrero y requerirá que los estudiantes asistan a WID 2 veces durante el
año escolar. Además, los estudiantes recibirán tareas rigurosas cada semana. Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse
para los grupos de ciencias durante sus clases de ciencia empezando el lunes, 7 de noviembre. Las aplicaciones
se deben de entregar a más tardar el 18 de noviembre. Si estás interesado, por favor comunícate con tu maestro de

Concurso de Historia Afroamericana (AAHCB por sus siglas en ingles)
Le extendemos la invitación a participar en el concurso anual de la Historia Afroamericana (AAHCB). Este concurso es un programa educativo de la organización “100
Black Men of Madison” con el propósito de aumentar el interés en la historia Afroamericana. Todos los estudiantes de las escuelas intermedias de Madison tienen la opción de
participar y así fomentar el orgullo y la apreciación de la cultura y el patrimonio afroamericanos. Los estudiantes ampliarán de manera divertida su conocimiento de la historia afroamericana en concursos competitivos a nivel local y nacional.
Los maestros Aimee Brountie and Richard Hamel prepararán a los participantes en
un club después de la jornada escolar utilizando el libro de Henry Louis Gates Jr., “LIfe
Upon These Shores - Looking at African-American History 1513-2008.”

Competición de Autores del Río Yahara
Quién: Caricaturistas, autores creativos , editorialistas y poetas en grados 5 a 8 en Dane County.
Qué: Una competición! Los estudiantes entregan sus composiciones en una de los siguientes categorías:
 poesia
 historias cortas
 editoriales
 dibujos animados
Cuándo: Los estudiantes tienen hasta el 7 de diciembre a entregar sus composiciones. Los pueden entregar a su maestro de artes del lenguaje o a Sr. Hamel, el maestro de Aprendizaje Avanzado.
Cómo: Los estudiantes pueden ver las regulaciones de la competicion en internet en el sitio
del Aprendizaje Avanzado de Gran Dane en sitio web: http://www.gdcain.org/yahara. Los estudiantes
también pueden preguntar a Sr. Hamel o su maestro por las materias apropriadas.
Línea de Tiempo:

6th GRADE BAND STUDENTS ARE NOW PLAYING INSTRUMENTS!
A reminder to all parents of 6th grade band students- Your kids are now in the process of learning
how to make proper sounds on their mouthpieces, and learning how to play their full instrument.
Please be patient with these interesting new sounds and encourage them to practice 5-6 days a
week for 10-15 minutes at a time, as required by our grading policy. Also, your band students may
need helpful reminders to take good care of their instruments, to bring their instruments to school
and back home, and some students may even need help with transportation from you. We appreciate your understanding and support of your young musicians as they continue to grow- you’ll be
amazed with what they’ll accomplish by their first concert in December!
MADISON ALL-CITY HONOR BAND
MACHB for 7th and 8th grade band students that meets on Tuesday evenings is now underway for
the first semester, with their first rehearsal occurring on October 4th at LaFollette High School.
Congratulations to Jeffrey Li, Micah Scarlett, and Ryan Dent for being accepted into this high level
group of musicians!
Stay tuned for their fall concert, which will be at LaFollette High School on Tuesday, Dec. 6th, at
7:30 p.m. Interested students will also be given a chance to join up for the spring semester (located
on the west side at Hamilton MS/West High) in January.
TAKING PRIVATE LESSONS GIVES BAND STUDENTS A GREAT ADVANTAGE.
Band students who take private lessons gain not only advanced playing skills but also selfconfidence in their performance. You can increase the enjoyment of playing for your child by arranging for some lessons. These can be especially helpful for beginning 6th grade students.
Please see me for a list of reputable teachers in our area for each individual instrument.
