Growing up in Colombia, Jimmy was an
avid soccer player. When he was ten years
old, he represented Colombia in a Youth
Soccer tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Jimmy’s soccer passion and skill helped him
when, at the age of 15, he earned a scholarship to attend Poplar Bluff High School in
Missouri for his 9th grade year. He immediately earned a spot on the varsity soccer
team, and he went on to lead the team to
the Missouri South East Championship. He
was also very active with the school’s Math
and Spanish clubs, where he eventually
became the president.
After returning to Colombia to finish high
school. Jimmy came back to the United
States to attend the University of Tulsa’s
(TU) Petroleum Engineering program. He
excelled in his classes and was placed on
the Dean’s Honor Roll for four semesters,
and the President’s Honor Roll for two semesters. His soccer talent came in handy a
second time when he learned the school’s
football team needed a new place kicker.
He tried out and made the team, adding
“Division 1 College Football Player” to his
growing resume.
After completing his bachelor’s degree,
he earned a research assistantship that
helped fund his pursuit of a master’s
degree. For the next two years, Jimmy
worked on a research project on rheology,
which is the study of the flow of matter,
primarily in the liquid state. As part of his
research, he set up and maintained an
experimental facility where he performed
flow loop tests of different polymeric drilling
fluids at different flow rates.
Colombia is located in the northwestern corner of South America.

the center of the country nearly
9,000 feet above sea level in the
Andes Mountains
After completing his master’s degree in
Petroleum Engineering at the University
of Tulsa, Jimmy joined Chevron’s Energy
Technology Company in June 2005. In his
nearly 10-year career he has worked as
a Drilling Engineer, Subsea Engineer and
Intervention Engineer in the Gulf of Mexico
Deepwater, Brazil and Singapore where he
was part of the team that commissioned
Deepwater rigs.
He also worked for Chevron’s Dual
Gradient Drilling project as a Lead Drilling Engineer where he was responsible
for developing the business case for this
project, for designing the portfolio of wells
that would benefit from this technology
and for obtaining all the required permits to
test and use this technology in the Gulf of
Mexico Deepwater.
After working 9 years in technical roles,
Jimmy is now working as the Planning
and Strategic Coordinator for Chevron in
Latin America. In this role, Jimmy is being
allowed to learn the business side of the Oil
and Gas industry where he works closely
with the assets that Chevron operates in
Latin America.
Never one to forget his “raices” (roots),
Jimmy has a strong social commitment to
his family and community. He continues to
give back to his home community through
the Colombian Foundation “Fundacion
Amor y Compasion” where he sends
clothes, school supplies, and Christmas
gifts to help children in poverty. Jimmy is an
inspirational role model to generations of
young Hispanic engineers and scientists.

What do Petroleum
Engineers do?
Petroleum engineers are broadly divided
into three categories. Production Engineers
handle the daily management of oil and gas
production to increase revenue and lower
operating costs. Drilling Engineers design
and execute well designs in the quest
for hydrocarbons while optimizing cost.
Reservoir Engineers evaluate the economic
potential of new discoveries and monitor
the performance of existing oil fields to
maximize its monetary value.

Durante su niñez en Colombia, Jimmy era
un futbolista ávido. A los diez años, representó a Colombia en un torneo juvenil de
fútbol en Rio de Janeiro. A la edad de 15
años, esa pasión y habilidad para el fútbol le
ayudaron a Jimmy a ganar una beca, para
poder asistir a la escuela Poplar Buff High
School en Missouri durante el noveno grado.
De inmediato se ganó un lugar en el equipo
principal, y ayudó a su equipo a llegar
al Campeonato del Sudeste de Missouri.
Jimmy también fue muy activo en los clubes
de matemáticas y español, donde eventualmente fue presidente.
Jimmy regresó a Colombia para terminar la
escuela secundaria, pero volvió de nuevo a
los Estados Unidos para asistir al programa
de Ingeniería Petrolera en la Universidad de
Tulsa (TU) en Oklahoma. Sobresalió en todas sus clases, y fue nombrado en la Lista de
Honor del Decano por cuatro semestres, y en
la Lista de Honor del Presidente por dos semestres. Su talento del fútbol resultó útil por
segunda vez cuando se enteró que el equipo
de fútbol americano de la escuela necesitaba
un nuevo pateador. Intentó y logró ser parte
del equipo, agregando “Futbolista de Primera
División” a su creciente currículum.
Después de completar su licenciatura, Jimmy obtuvo una ayudantía de investigación
que le ayudó a financiar su título de maestría. Durante los próximos dos años, Jimmy
trabajó en un proyecto de investigación en
reología, que es el estudio del flujo de la
materia, principalmente en el estado líquido.
Como parte de su investigación, estableció y
mantuvo una instalación experimental donde
realizó pruebas de bucle de diferentes fluidos de perforación poliméricos en diferentes
estados de flujo.

DEL SUR
Después de terminar su maestría en Ingeniería de Petróleo en la Universidad de Tulsa
en junio 2005, Jimmy empezó a trabajar con
la Compañía Energy Technology de Chevron. Durante su carrera de casi 10 años,
Jimmy ha trabajado como ingeniero de perforación, ingeniero de subsea, e ingeniero
de intervención en las Aguas Profundas del
Golfo de México, Brasil y Singapore, donde
fue parte del equipo que se encargó de las
plataformas en las Aguas Profundas.
También trabajó para el proyecto Dual Gradient Drilling de Chevron, como ingeniero director de perforación, donde fue responsable
del desarrollo del caso de negocio para este
proyecto, para el diseño de la cartera de pozos que se beneficiarían de esta tecnología
y para obtener todos los permisos para
probar y utilizar esta tecnología en las
Aguas Profundas del Golfo de México.
Después de trabajar 9 años en puestos
técnicos, Jimmy ahora trabaja como el Coordinador de Planificación y Estrategia para
Chevron en Latinoamérica. En este puesto,
Jimmy está aprendiendo el lado del negocio de la industria de Petróleo y Gas donde
trabaja con los activos que Chevron opera
en Latinoamérica.
Jimmy nunca ha olvidado sus raíces. El
mantiene una responsabilidad social fuerte
con su familia y con la comunidad. Sigue
sirviendo a su comunidad por medio de su
participación con la Fundación Colombiana,
“Fundación Amor y Compasión” donde
manda ropa, materiales escolares y regalos
de Navidad para ayudar a los niños viviendo
en la pobreza. Jimmy es un modelo inspirador para generaciones de jóvenes científicos
e ingenieros hispanos.
Colombia se encuentra en la esquina noroeste de Sudamérica.
La capital, Bogotá, se encuentra
en el centro del país, casi 9,000

Cordillera de los Andes.

¿Qué hace un
Ingeniero Petrolero?
Los ingenieros del petróleo se dividen ampliamente en tres categorías. Los Ingenieros
de Producción manejan la gestión diaria de la
producción de petróleo y gas para aumentar los
ingresos y reducir los costos operativos. Los Ingenieros de Perforación diseñan y ejecutan los
diseños de pozos en la búsqueda de hidrocarburos mientras optimizan los costos. Ingenieros
de Yacimientos evalúan el potencial económico
de los nuevos descubrimientos y monitorean el
desempeño de los campos petroleros existentes para maximizar su valor monetario.
