ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com November 29, 2015 Dear Friends, The Sung Mass in Latin (Missa Cantata) will be celebrated on Monday, November 30 at 7:00 pm. I share again the words of Max Josef Metzger, a Catholic Priest martyred by the Nazis in 1944: All are welcome. Please join us. “He knows not Advent’s meaning who has never sat By twilight in a dreary cell, its window dim; Even by day comes li,le light into the narrow space. Evening falls, slowly steals away the sun. Night throws her gloomy mantle round the room, Terrifying, impenetrable. Will it always be night? Will ne’er a ray of sunshine pierce the gloom? And a new day lead on to joy? A faint light glimmers through the narrow ri4, a witness That the sun sets never and soon will rise again, Yes, that the light on which men turned their backs, The Lord will bring again, with power and glory, And found his everlas7ng kingdom! Blessed Christmas Wafers A centuries’ old Christmas vigil tradition enjoyed by East Europeans, blessed wafers are available from Saint Vincent de Paul Society at the Knights of Columbus Christmas tree trailer at Saint Leo. Times (beginning November 29): Mon-Fri 3:30-8; Sat 9-8; Sun 9-5. Please call for availability after December 17. Donation is $4.00 per wafer package. For information call 703-764-0243. Wafer proceeds benefit the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Father Diamond Scholarship Knights of Columbus Council 6292 will award a 4 year $500 scholarship to a Catholic student entering 9th grade in a Catholic HS starting in the Fall 2016. I believe in Advent!” As we enter into this season of Advent, may we who are imprisoned by our own fears and doubts, believe again in the coming of the one who has never le4 us – Jesus, the cause of our joy! Perfect love drives out all fear. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor Parish Advent Penance Service and Individual Confessions There will be an Advent Penance Service on Sunday, December 13, at 7:30 pm in the Church. We plan to have more than 14 priests to hear individual confessions. Please plan to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to participate in the sacrament before Christmas. GIVING TREE HEARTS will adorn Saint Vincent de Paul's Christmas GIVING TREE in the church vestibule. The hearts have descriptions and sizes of gifts requested by needy families/seniors within our parish boundaries. These families have been interviewed by SVDP members to learn what the adults & children could really use. A number of heart requests will also assist the homeless and babies of single mothers. We ask you to share the joy of Christmas with someone in need by taking a heart from the tree and providing the gift described. Please place your unwrapped gifts in a gift bag with the heart attached. On Sundays, place the gift in the large decorated box in the vestibule next to the tree. During the week, gifts should be taken to the parish office. All gifts need to be returned no later than Tuesday, December 15. As in past years, toys for children will not be requested on the hearts. Instead clothing and educational gifts will be emphasized. Thank you for your generosity. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized & those who were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation, Confirmation. Every September, a new RCIA process begins at St. Leo. We invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join us. While classes are part of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays, from 7:30-9 pm in the Guadalupe Room. Adult Confirmation Adults who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation need to attend the RCIA classes on Tuesday evenings. Classes have begun and will continue through March, 2016. Adult Confirmation will take place at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington, on May 14 & 15, 2016.
