These dioceses are unable to fund essential pastoral work, such as religious education, seminarian formation, and lay ministry training, without assistance. Because of this, they struggle to serve the unique needs of their communities. Through your support, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps to ease the struggle of these dioceses and to form vibrant faith communities. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to the appeal next weekend, March 12/13. Special envelopes are in the pews. MOVE MORE EAT HEALTHY Come learn how to eat better and be active to help prevent obesity, diabetes and other health problems. What: When: Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the Fourth Sunday of Lent, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Shawn Kirchner’s “Amazing Grace.” Kirchner (b. 1970) was born and raised with his triplet brother and sister in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Kirchner worked as a vocal coach and pianist in Chicago before relocating to Los Angeles, where he serves as organist/ pianist/composer in residence at the La Verne Church of the Brethren. Following the advice of his mentor Alice Parker, Kirchner has produced a significant body of choral works for his 65-voice church choir as well as for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, with whom he regularly performs and served as Composer in Residence from 20122015. He is also active as a film session singer and may be heard on the soundtracks of Avatar, Frozen, and the X -Men films. Shawn’s setting of “Amazing Grace” features the text by John Newton but not the familiar melody. Instead, the sopranos sing a melody which resembles the original in style and contour but is entirely new. The harmonic progression is reminiscent of the original hymn setting, but departs from it in unexpected ways. The listener is left with the impression of hearing something both familiar and unexpected. I am privileged to have Shawn as a friend and colleague and I look forward to introducing his work to the choir and the OLG congregation. During Communion, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Henry Purcell’s “Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts.” Purcell (1659-1695) composed this setting of the Sixth Sentence of the Anglican Burial Service for the funeral of Queen Mary, which took place in March of 1695. It would be performed again only six months later at his own funeral in November of the same year. He is buried next to the organ in Westminster Abbey; his epitaph reads: “Here lyes Henry Purcell Esq., who left this life and is gone to that blessed place where only his harmony can be exceeded.” Both of today’s choral offerings convey a plea for mercy and the bestowing of grace and forgiveness that amplify today’s Second Reading (“whoever is in Christ is a new creation”) and the Gospel Reading of the parable of the Prodigal Son. —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director Gloria Dei Choir 2 more weekly nutrition classes for parents Next class is Thursday, March 10, 6:30—8:00 p.m. (English & Spanish) Where: Here at OLG Topics: Build a Healthy Plate Create Healthy Meals What’s on a Food Label Rethink your Drink Shopping on a Budget More Information: (562) 691-0533 Catholic Cemeteries in Orange County Pre-Need Planning Program “Family burial arrangements are among the most important and inevitable decisions a Catholic must make. Because of the many emotional and financial savings that result by planning these arrangements in advance of need, the Diocese of Orange urges all Catholic families to learn about their burial options. The apostolic and administrative work of Catholic Cemeteries truly reflects the corporal and spiritual works of Mercy.” —Bishop Kevin Vann A counselor will be available next weekend on Jason’s Plaza after Masses to answer questions on advance funeral planning.
