Excelencia 2012-III
Viajar a Londres ha sido, sin
duda, la mejor experiencia
que he vivido. Los días
previos a mi viaje debo
admitir que me sentía muy
nerviosa e incluso asustada.
Iba a estar sola en el otro
lado del mundo por primera vez en mi vida, ¡a seis husos
horarios del Perú! Era todo un reto que sabía que iba a
poder superar. Definitivamente me cambió la vida y también
me dio una visión más global, ya que conocí la ciudad más
cosmopolita del mundo. Para mí, estar en Londres fue como
tener el mundo en una sola ciudad, pues en las calles podías
ver a personas de diversas partes del mundo. Lo mismo
ocurrió en las clases, donde estudiaba y convivía
diariamente con personas de Italia, España, Portugal, Arabia
Saudita, Irán, Colombia, Alemania, China, Brasil, Turquía,
¡de todo el mundo! Fue increíble y enriquecedor poder
realizar un intercambio cultural de esa magnitud gracias al
BRITÁNICO. Fue una oportunidad única, de esas que solo se
presentan una vez en la vida: caminé al lado del río Támesis
casi a diario; conocí a mis estrellas favoritas en Madame
Tussauds; fui a Oxford, Bath y Stonehenge; visité The
Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square e increíbles museos
como el Natural History Museum, la National Gallery y la
National Portrait Gallery; viajé en los buses rojos de dos
pisos; y, lo mejor de todo, en uno de mis últimos días ¡vi al
Prince Charles!

Además de todo esto, viajar a Londres fue una experiencia
muy gratificante en lo personal, ya que me ayudó a ser
mucho más independiente; y también haber estudiado
inglés en el Reino Unido me da un enorme plus en el ámbito
profesional.
Gracias, BRITÁNICO, por darnos esta maravillosa
oportunidad intercultural. Recuerda que los límites los
ponemos nosotros mismos y que no hay obstáculos en la
vida, solo retos. El BRITÁNICO brinda a sus estudiantes
todas las herramientas para alcanzar el tan ansiado viaje a

Estudiar en el BRITÁNICO ha sido una gran experiencia, no sólo porque logré aprender un
nuevo idioma, sino también por el agradable ambiente en el que tuve la suerte de estudiar, y
por los maravillosos profesores con los que aprendí mucho más de lo que contenían los libros,
y que siempre me motivaban a seguir estudiando y practicando para mejorar poco a poco.
Quiero expresar mi profunda gratitud al BRITÁNICO por estos motivos y por la oportunidad
de hacer mi sueño realidad al otorgarme una beca para viajar al Reino Unido y aprender
más de la cultura británica, que conocí cuando empecé a estudiar y me fascinó desde el
primer momento.

Aparecer en la revista BRITÁNICO News recibiendo la Beca a
la Excelencia era una aspiración... un sueño, casi imposible,
que se hizo realidad cuando el señor Thomas Malcomson
anunció mi nombre entre los ganadores. Sigo creyendo que
es un sueño y cuento los días para verlo convertido en
realidad.

aburrido, es fin de mes, sales de clase y ves qué hay de

incrédula; sin embargo, de la misma manera, tú puedes

Ya han pasado más de cuatro años desde mi primer día de
clase… Recuerdo que tenía miedo (no lo puedo negar)
porque veía el aprendizaje de un idioma, que hoy siento
familiar, como un inmenso reto; pero —gracias a lo
positivo del ambiente, la dinámica de la metodología y la
constante ayuda y atención de los profesores— me adapté
más rápido de lo que había imaginado, incluso deseaba
que el sábado llegara más pronto porque sabía que
aprendería algo nuevo y me divertiría. A medida que fue
pasando el tiempo, empecé a fijarme en aquellos artículos
del BRITÁNICO News que relataban las experiencias de los
alumnos becados; y un día, como bromeando, me dije a
mí misma que yo sería una de ellos. Mis profesores
siempre hablaban de esto como una posibilidad para
cualquier estudiante, solo se necesitaban esfuerzo y
dedicación; porque si fuese imposible no existirían estas
líneas ni este artículo ni todos los becados. Como dijo un
día mi profesora de Avanzado: «¿Acaso ven que las
personas que viajan a Londres son verdes? Por supuesto
que no».
El BRITÁNICO celebra con todos los peruanos esta gran
fiesta por el aniversario patrio; asimismo, por la continua
lucha y amor para lograr un país mejor. Gracias a todos
los que contribuyen con esta causa… ¡Viva el Perú!

Cuando vi el BRITÁNICO
News por primera vez y leí los
testimonios de los chicos que
habían ganado la Beca a la
Excelencia y habían ido a
Inglaterra, me dije a mí
mismo que debía ganarla yo
también. Tres años más tarde,
luego de dar el FCE, cuando
me mandaron la carta que decía que había obtenido A y
estaba nominado a la Beca, grité de emoción. Y cuando me
dijeron que los otros cinco nominados y yo habíamos
ganado, casi lo hice de nuevo. Pensaba: «Me voy a
Inglaterra». Esto no habría sido posible sin el apoyo del
BRITÁNICO y de mis profesores -en especial Diego Khamis,
mi profesor de Avanzado, que toleró todas mis ocurrencias
por 6 ciclos y me enseñó muy bien-. ¡Gracias!

I still remember my first class
at the BRITÁNICO. Every
Saturday I woke up early and
went to classes with amazing
teachers that always left me
wanting to know more. To be
honest, there was a time
when I didn’t want to
continue my English studies,
however I kept going to the BRITÁNICO and now I can see
how useful English is in life. I was always the youngest and
felt really proud about it. I feel that the BRITÁNICO has
become my second home. When they told me that I had
been awarded the scholarship, I couldn’t help myself and
cried. I would like to finish this article by thanking four
special people: my advanced teacher Ella Tenorio who really
helped me on this journey, my parents and my brother who
encouraged me to keep moving forward.

BRITÁNICO News as well as
the testimonies of various
students who had won the
Excellence Scholarship, it’s
utterly amazing to know
that I’m now one of them.
When my name was
announced as one of the winners, I was astounded. It was
definitely one of the greatest moments of my entire life!
It all started in Juniors 1, after heeding my parents’ advice
on taking up English lessons. I can still vividly recall my very
first day of class at the BRITÁNICO. I was beyond nervous,
but soon became impressed with the teaching method. All
the teachers were immensely nice and wise, but more
importantly, they were my friends and always willing to help
me. Overall, it’s been a phenomenal experience. Not only
did I meet incredible people, but I also learnt a lot about the
English language and culture.
Finally, I’d like to thank my parents, who have given me
their unconditional support throughout all these years; my
advanced teacher, Yanet Paredes, not only for teaching way
beyond the textbook, but for being an exceptional teacher
and helping me develop a passion for the English language;
and last but not least, the BRITÁNICO for giving me this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enhance my English skills.
Just knowing that I’ll soon be travelling to the UK is truly a
dream come true!

ganaron la Beca a la Excelencia que el BRITÁNICO ofrece a sus estudiantes que aprueban con

El miércoles 3 de julio, en Miraflores, se llevó a cabo la
ceremonia de premiación de la Reciclatón, que reunió a
nuestros once centros de enseñanza. El ganador fue el
BRITÁNICO Miraflores. Asimismo, el segundo lugar lo
ocupó el BRITÁNICO Pueblo Libre; y el tercero, el
BRITÁNICO Camacho.

PRESENTACIÓN DE LA
ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DEL
BRITÁNICO
El jueves 4 de julio, en coordinación con el Centro Naval del
Perú, se llevó a cabo con mucho éxito la segunda
presentación oficial de la Orquesta Sinfónica del BRITÁNICO,
formada por nuestros propios alumnos, algunos de ellos
miembros del Conservatorio Nacional de Música.
La orquesta deleitó y emocionó a los asistentes con temas
de Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, entre otros.
Este proyecto es una iniciativa de nuestro presidente del
Consejo Directivo, el ingeniero Juan Lira; y cuenta con el
apoyo del músico y compositor clásico Duncan Haynes,
como director de la orquesta, y del saxofonista David
Cabrejos, que lo asiste en todos los ensayos y las
presentaciones.
La formación de la Orquesta del BRITÁNICO empezó en
enero del 2012 con audiciones a más de 80 jóvenes que
tocaban el violín, la viola, la flauta, la trompeta, el clarinete,
el trombón, el contrabajo, el saxo alto o el chelo, y siguió
con los ensayos y el perfeccionamiento desde abril de ese
año. Además, progresivamente, se están incorporando
nuevos instrumentos. Hoy, la orquesta cuenta con 40
integrantes.

PERIODO DE ACTUALIZACIÓN
HAPPY TEACHER’S DAY!
MyEnglishLab (MEL) es el componente online de nuestra serie SPEAKOUT. A través de
esta herramienta, nuestros alumnos practican lo aprendido en clase de una forma
interactiva.
El BRITÁNICO organizó una cena muy especial, en el Sheraton Hotel, para todos sus profesores, los cuales dejaron por un
momento las aulas y disfrutaron de una noche de alegría y diversión.
Por motivos de actualización de la página de MEL, no estará disponible desde el 24 de
julio al 11 de agosto. Pasada esta fecha, todos los usuarios podrán seguir utilizando la
renovada página con su mismo nombre de usuario y contraseña.
Desde el 12 de agosto, MEL presentará una página más atractiva, más fácil de usar y
será compatible con iPads, lo cual dará mayor accesibilidad a esta importante
herramienta. Asimismo, es importante resaltar que los datos guardados en la
plataforma no se perderán.

El BRITÁNICO organizó un concurso para todos los alumnos del programa de Juniors. El tema fue trabajar un afiche en el
que se describiera una semana en la vida de Michael Harris, autor de la serie Challenges con la que trabajamos en este
programa.
Se recibieron 65 afiches, lo que significó la participación de
65 profesores y 1,410 alumnos.
Con la asistencia del Sr. Harris se entregaron los premios a
los ganadores:

A Rewarding Experience

Winner of the Challenges 3 contest
When I first heard about this contest, I
was so excited that I encouraged my
students to take part in it from the very
beginning because I knew it would be a
great opportunity for them to make good
use of the language they are learning.
My students entered into the spirit of making the poster so
they worked really hard on it and they organized everything
by themselves while I was just monitoring their work. They
were divided into three teams and each was assigned
specific tasks such as selection of ideas and content,
proofreading and decoration.
As soon as they had completed the poster, they felt more
than satisfied and so did I. I congratulated them on what
they had done. For me it was awesome! In fact, it was so
awesome that we were able to win the contest. My students
and I are so happy about it since all the hard work paid off.
Contests like this should be held regularly as they give
students the chance of not only using the language but also
improving it by means of finding as much information as
needed when performing the task.

A GUEST IN THE CLASSROOM
DEALING WITH WRITING

Never before had I attempted something like this. Having
a native guest in my class sounded complicated at first and
difficult for my pre-intermediate students. But the fact is
that it resulted in a very productive activity and I can
honestly say both my guest and my students benefited
from it.
It all started one day when my students said it would be
ideal to be able to practise their English in a café with real
native speakers. I immediately thought of asking a
colleague of mine to come as a guest to be interviewed by
the girls in my lesson. The students found themselves
asking different questions they had previously prepared
and the native teacher was not only answering them but
also engaging them in conversation.
I would encourage everyone to try having guests in the
classroom. From my experience, the students would
appreciate it and who knows what your guest can learn
from it as well.

English writing might be considered as one of the most
difficult skills to teach, though some may not agree.
However, most students do struggle with tenses, expressions
and countless exceptions which make this skill a real
challenge not only for them but also for teachers.
This workshop was intended to exchange ideas and
experiences in order to standardize strategies. Making our
students confident and comfortable enough to perform well
in a writing session was the aim. Teachers who attended this
session agreed on the fact that creating the appropriate
atmosphere is the best way to prepare our students.
Unforgiving mistakes can be anticipated if we as teachers do
not take things for granted. Simple concepts, even technical
ones (depending on the level), will contribute to build up our
students’ confidence.
Encouraging our students to read will also do its part.
Students who usually read can deal successfully with this
task. The onus is on us to promote reading in order to
increase their knowledge not only of vocabulary but also
cultural background. The habit might even become more
memorable and significant in their lives.

In our new set book, SPEAKOUT upper-intermediate,
students learn how to write a story in few words. This is
what my wonderful Intermediate 8 students (aged
between 14 and 25), inspired by their enthusiasm, did last
month. They wrote their six-word stories, which they let
me share with you.

Austen’s world was taken for granted by her contemporaries
who read her novels, but to us modern readers many details
may at times seem to be lost. It is a world so distant from us
and it is fascinating to learn and discover more. I am no
Janeite, however I have become an avid reader and great
admirer of her work.
Things to consider I never quite realised before, for example
... dancing shoes. When walking, people would most likely
wear boots (think of British weather) but on arrival and in
order to dance, they changed into special shoes.

• Its original title was First Impressions in 1797 but
as we know now, it was not published back
then.
• Jane Austin's identity as an author was kept in
secret ... In her first novel: "By a lady" ... in Pride
and Prejudice "by the author of Sense and
Sensibility"
• There is a virtual space where over 1000 pages of
fiction written in Jane Austen's own hand with
zooming option may be found and explored.
• Even Winston Churchill is known to have read
Pride and Prejudice in December 1943 while
required to rest in order to restore his health.
Years before he has also read Sense and
Sensibility.
• You can find copies and graded readers at
BRITÁNICO Central Library in San Isidro but also
at your local SAC.
So here we are in 2013 with nearly 150 official events
around the world, conferences, stage adaptations,
exhibitions, demonstrations, outdoor theatre, family affair
performances, talks, workshops, dancing, open air
productions, walking tours, courses and readings. One of
the best readings so far was by Jeremy Harmer and the
Bingham String Quartet on June 12 at a British Council
Seminar called "One must speak a little you know! (or how
Lizzy got her man)".
I would dare to say that Pride and Prejudice is probably the
funniest of her novels and one of those enduring pieces: a
fine story with all the different elements of romance,
passion, class division, frustration, snobbery, and vanity, to
name but a few.
Learning for us all is, needless to say, an ongoing process, so
here I have shared with you, dear readers, some of my
findings in the hope to inspire you to start your own
search...

Holanda, Colombia, Estados Unidos, Cuba y Perú
Presentaremos reconocidos temas de compositores
clásicos como Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky,
Strauss, entre otros, a ritmo de SALSA. Los invitados
internacionales, Maite Hontele (Holanda), Ramón
Benítez (Colombia), George Garzone (Estados Unidos) y
Laureano Rigol (Cuba), compartirán escenario con la
Jazz Groove Big Band (Perú). Asimismo, tendremos dos
jam sessions y clases maestras que estarán a cargo de
nuestros invitados internacionales; y se presentará en
calidad de ESTRENO la obra ganadora del VII Concurso
de Composición Musical “Salsa N°1 para Big Band” de
César Peredo.
