LANGFORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL March 2015 Volume 3, Issue 3 Principal’s News Dear Langford Families, Spring is here and we are really busy at Langford! Our students are working incredibly hard with their teachers to cover all of the curriculum for their grade level. Specifically, our kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grade teachers are working through the rigorous units of our reading program, Reading Street. Our fifth and sixth grade teachers have been implementing our district literacy units with some new materials this year too: Text Connections in 5th grade and Plugged In in 6th grade. All of these programs incorporate skills from the Connecticut State Standards and will help to prepare our students for the new Smarter Balanced Assessments. We have started our Smarter Balanced testing this week and we even have some classes taking the assessment on our iPads! Let’s keep our focus on improving and accelerating our students’ reading achievement. We are closely monitoring your child’s progress in reading and your support is very much appreciated. PLEASE be sure your child reads for a MINIMUM of 20 minutes EVERY day. Practicing reading (alone, with a parent or with a sibling) is critical to developing your child’s reading skills. AND students who have developed strong reading skills also do better in math! As you have probably noticed, there are so many more word problems that students must solve in math these days. You can help your child succeed with these word problems by having your 2nd-6th grader log onto Fasttmath to practice his/her math facts. You can find the Fasttmath link on our website. We are really enjoying watching our students grow and improve in math too! As the weather warms up, we move out of flu season! We are looking forward to our students attending school every single day! We are tracking your child’s attendance very carefully and we hope to have your support here as well. Thank you for being our partner in your child’s education! Sincerely, Dr. Sharon Epple, principal Important Upcoming Events March 23-27 – Parent/Teacher Conferences – Students will be dismissed at 1:20 p.m. all week Wednesday, April 1 – Lifetouch Spring Pictures Friday, April 3 – No School – Good Friday April 6-10 – No School – Spring Vacation Dorese Roberts – East Hartford Board of Education Member is Langford School’s “Adopt A School” representative. ESL/BILINGUAL NEWS Hello Students and Families of Langford! We hope you are all doing well! Our ELL/Bilingual Team is very excited to welcome Spring of 2015--it has been a very cold and long winter, but sunnier days and warmer weather are right around the corner! We have been working very hard with our ELL students to help them become proficient in English. They have made great progress and are using new vocabulary and expressions! We are so happy to see our students gaining more and more English skills and confidence. As you may be aware, we began LAS Links testing at the beginning of February and tested all 70 of our ELL students on their speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. All students put great effort into each part of the test. Plus, for the first time we administered the test to Grades 3-6 in the computer lab. (Grades K-2 were tested on pencil and paper.) Thanks to our Bilingual Tutors, the help of our computer technicians, and our students who demonstrate the RRAP Rules, testing went very successfully! We completed LAS Links testing at the end of February and we hope to receive the results within the next month. We are also very excited to inform you that we are having an ELL/Bilingual Event called “Celebrations” that will be held on Thursday April 23 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm here at Langford. All of our ELL students and their families are invited to this fun night of awards/certificates, pizza, and food and music from different countries. You will receive an invitation in a few weeks and we will be asking for an RSVP so we can plan! We hope you can make it and we look forward to seeing you there! Thank you for continuing improving your children’s English and literacy skills. Have a great Spring! -Mrs. Megan Ambrosio, ESL Teacher -Mr. Francisco Chavez, ESL/Bilingual Teacher -Ms. Danielle Buttafuoco, Bilingual Tutor - Ms. Jessica Fontana, Bilingual Tutor NOTICIAS DEL PROGRAMA BILINGUE Y DE INGLES COMO SEGUNDO IDIOMA Hola Familias y Estudiantes de la Escuela Langford!!! Congratulations to all our Grade 5/6 classes for finishing the Cyber Safety program with an average score of 86%!! We are not only the first school in East Hartford, but the first school in CT to make the leaderboard. https://sos.fbi.gov/leader-board A Fraction of Your Time by the Instructional Services Department Smarter Balanced Assessment Beginning in March, East Hartford Public School students in grades 3 – 6 will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Last year students participated in the Field Test (SBAC), and this year they will participate in year 1 of Smarter Balanced testing. How does the Smarter Balanced Assessment address student achievement? The Smarter Balanced Assessment addresses the English/Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Connecticut Core Standards (CCS). The goal of the CCS is for all students to leave high school being college and career ready. Connecticut and 25 other states have joined together to administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment to measure our students’ growth toward this college and career readiness goal as they move through our education system. When will the assessment be administered? Students in grades 3-6 will take the English Language Arts assessments between March 17 th-April 2nd. Students in grades 3-6 will take the Math assessments between May 11 th-May 30th. Actual testing days and times will be established at each school. How long will the tests take? ELA and mathematics tests, each of which includes a 30-minute in-class activity, will take approximately 3 1/2 hours per subject area and will be administered in the schools’ computer labs. The actual tests are untimed and will be broken up over several testing periods (3-4 testing periods no longer than 1-2 hours with breaks given to students as needed). Students will not be expected to sit for extensive time periods as these tests can be administered in parts as appropriate. How are our students being prepared to take the Smarter Balanced Assessment? The K – 6 English/Language Arts and mathematics curricula are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and thus students are being prepared for the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Additionally, students are provided with opportunities to develop typing and other technology- based skills to prepare them for the Smarter Balanced Assessment and 21st Century learning. Helping Your Child with Speech and Language: Ms. E. Tarzia, SLP Shopping and preparing meals together (at any age!) is a fun way to practice and expand language skills. 1. Your child can help you prepare a grocery list. They can name (or read) items from a weekly store advertisement section. Either they can copy/write the words or tell them to you, as you write. 2. When at the store, have them find items on the list. Be sure to use different category words as you shop together. (Ex. dairy, fruits, vegetables, meat, juices, soups, paper products, cleaners, etc.) 3. Your child can help put away the groceries. Use concept words such as “put the jelly next to the peanut butter” or “put the celery on the bottom shelf’ Older children can read the labels, box tops, and nutritional information as they store the items. 4. Have your child help read the ingredients and directions from a recipe. 5. Talk about different cooking words such as mix, stir, boil, add, etc. (Give more detailed explanations for older children, such as the meaning of cut, chop, slice, mince, puree, etc). 6. Review the sequence of the meal preparation using first, next, then, last. 7. Praise your child’s help and skills. 8. Bon appetit!
