But the celebration never ends, because the good news of Jesus remains just as good! So the church calendar doesn't simply run off the rails once it passes out of the three obvious seasons: Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter. It keeps moving forward into what used to be essentially the Season of Pentecost—a.k.a. the “season of the church.” It's the longest of all the seasons, including the time between Christmas and Lent and flowing forward from Pentecost through the feast of Christ the King at the end of November. Maybe it needs to be the longest season because it takes a lot of time and effort, and not a few mistakes, to fully embrace the call to be the church in the world. We are church when we let love and forgiveness become the means by which we interact with others. We are church when we help others to discover that their potential to become great lies in following where God’s Holy Spirit leads. We are Church when we let God have the first place in our lives that through personally experiencing the Lord’s love, we become better disciples of Christ. The Holy Spirit reminds us that God focuses His attention on us, for we are the desire of God’s heart. Today, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit with the grace of God, let us praise God for the His love by serving others. This is how all will know that we are children of God and followers of Jesus. Today we celebrate the Confirmation of 29 of our sisters and brothers. Last Monday, 46 of our young people celebrated their Confirmation and yesterday 76 of our children celebrated their First Eucharist. In each of these sacramental moments, the Holy Spirit powerfully endowed our sisters and brothers with a deeper sense of God’s love. Please join me in thanking God for His work within our parish community. Likewise, let us pray for all those who have received the sacrament this Easter Season that each of them will continue to be faithful disciples of the Lord. Lastly, a work of gratitude to the catechists and staff of our Faith Formation, Confirmation, Adult Sacraments and RCIA programs for a ministry well done. Our parish community is alive and well. This year our festival is June 10-12. The festival is always a fun moment. Games, rides, music, great food, and the opportunity to gather with family make the festival a wonderful moment of community. I want to thank all who are working and will work to make this year’s festival a grand moment. We are still in need of volunteers for a variety of tasks. Please consider giving an hour or two during the festival to make it a success. Likewise, please sell raffle tickets. The raffle alone can be a substantial source of revenue if more books are sold. I encourage all of us to sell as many raffle books as possible. Let us make this year’s festival and raffle the best yet. God bless you. Have a great week in the Lord. Thank you for being a great parish. Tienen una gran semana en el Señor. Don, OSM May November 15, 2016 2, 2014 St.St.Philip PhilipBenizi, Benizi,O.S.M O.S.MCatholic CatholicCommunity Community Page 4 Treasures from our Tradition “Order” and “presbyter” are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and “priest” usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the “order of deacons,” “the order of presbyters,” and even “the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neophytes, penitents,” and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an “order” in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The “kiss of peace” is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly “ordained,” not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Jubilee Year of Mercy Solemnity of Pentecost Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim God’s mercy “to everyone without exception . . . again and again, with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the community speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native language. The Spirit does not restore Babel’s uniformity, but forges unity -in-diversity of language, race, nationality—embracing all without exception. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost’s Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity and isolation to share God’s mercy with the world. “This is our mission!” Francis exclaims. We are “given the gift of the ‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm . . . the heart of the peoples, drawing near to Him, the way, the truth, and the life” (Regina Coeli address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes Copyright © 2015, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. Living God’s Word Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. — (Psalm 104) Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and send them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit. — (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26 A PRAYER TO THE SPIRIT Spirit of Jesus, Poured out in flames of fire, upon your disciples on the day of Pentecost, we pray to you: Set afire the hearts of your faithful so that they will announce in all language of the world the wonders of the salvation of God. — From Come Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss. CSSP, copyright 1976—1981. THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright © J. S.
