In a passionate homily about mercy, he asked: "Who are you who shuts the door of your heart to a man, a woman who wants to improve, to return back into the people of God, because the Holy Spirit has stirred his or her heart? If people are hurt, what does Jesus do? Scolds them because they are hurt? No, he carries them. This is called mercy." The theme of mercy in the pope’s homily coincided so well with the purpose of our meeting. We presented Walter Cardinal Kasper’s newly published Paulist Press book, "Pope Francis' Revolution of Tenderness and Mercy,” which is available in the Welcome Center Bookstore. Only a few days before our arrival, Pope Francis announced an Extraordinary Jubilee Year dedicated to Mercy beginning on December 8, 2015. In the spirit of Pope Francis’ theme of mercy as the hallmark of his papacy, I presented a short film, “Owning Our Faith” produced by the Out at Saint Paul ministry. The film documents the experience of gay and lesbian CathoReligious Education lics and their struggle to ‘own their faith.’ I do not know if Parents should contact Hernán Sanchez at (212) 265-3495, the pope will view the film, nor did he endorse the film. The ext. 341 to register their children for Religious Education. pope graciously accepted the film and asked the faithful of Saint Paul’s to pray for him always. In a certain sense, the Visit us at: film is a reflection on mercy. The film is not intended to chalwww.stpaultheapostle.org lenge church teaching or provide a theological approach. Find us on Sharing the experiences of gay and lesbian Catholics is a part Facebook of the conversation about what stirs in the hearts of some of Church of Saint Paul the Apostle, NYC our sisters and brothers. We will be screening “Owning Our Faith” this Sunday evening at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. Some of those interviewed will be present on a panel to engage in a conversation.
