We thank you for joining us for the Ash Wednesday celebration. It was a wonderful event for our young at heart’s (Senior’s Mass and luncheon) activity for this month. We thank you for your support of our Italia Feast Spaghetti Dinner and of the American Heritage Girls at St. John of the Woods Parish for the cupcake social. We are entering the second week of this repentant season, to pray, to fast, and to do works of Mercy. We thank you for using the information to assist you with this Lenten Season, such as the reflection from Archbishop Peter for Lent, the Rice Bowl’s material, and participating with the parish community for prayers. We thank you for supporting many different projects that we are working on at this time. Especially, the demolition of the old school building at Sacred Heart’s Church, which is completed. We thank those workers who are supporting our parish with this project. We had to pay to rent the equipment to do the work, pay the license and permit fees, and pay for the dumper to remove all the materials. We took many pictures and we hope to post these up for you to review when we have time to do it. We thank the Construction Committee and the Fund Raising Committee who worked very hard to raise funds within the last few years to get this project moving forward. We also hope that we have raised enough funds to build the new building for the parish activities and ministries. We are also working on the Meditation Garden at St. John of the Woods Parish. We have a committee member who has spent the last few years organizing and gathering all the information on what needs to be done. They are raising funds to build a large Cross and to plant floras around the meditation garden. We hope each phase of this project will be completed, so we can have a wonderful garden to use and enjoy. We also have checked on the saplings that we had planted around our parish property after we harvested the mature trees. Of all the saplings we had planted, 60% of them are thriving. We will plant more saplings next year to replace those that did not survive. We thank the facility and grounds committee member who took time to fill in the road (to enter the baseball field and parish hall kitchen) with gravel. The project at St. Ann’s Rectory is progressing, as new windows are being installed throughout the building to seal the Rectory (preventing the heat from escaping during the winter time). This will assist us to save the cost of heating for the building during winter. These are a few projects that I need to report to you so you know what we are working on at this time. You already have received the parish annual Semi-Report for the last five months of what we have done. We thank you for your continued support to our regional parishes. We cordially invite you to join with the liturgical ministers from our regional parishes for their retreat this coming Saturday at St. John of the Woods Parish with Mass and time for reflection by Andrew Casad, the Director of the Liturgy Office from the Archdiocese of Seattle. He was with us last year for the Lenten retreat and was very helpful to us all. People who attended last year’s retreat gave him a high recommendation and we wanted to invite him back for this year. You do not want to miss the opportunity to attend this retreat day. Please organize your time and join us for this special day of retreat, so we can have time to be with each other and pray for our regional parishes. We thank you for registering your contribution for the online giving to support our parish with financial support. It is easy for you to make your contribution to support to the parish and not forget what you want to do. We are living in a society, which is so hard for us to remember to make a contribution to our home parish and there are many different bills that we have to pay and God is always coming last. By registering online, we are ensuring God will always come first on our giving to the Lord to support the parish life and ministry. There is information on how to do it on the parish website, parish bulletin or you can call the parish office so the parish staff can assist you by going through step by step with you on how to complete those forms. We thank the committee on taking the furniture and items from your home, which you have donated for the Parish Garage Sale. This is a good event for you to come and see what items you may need, so come and support the parish. Please contact Kathy Bunger or the committee if you want to buy some items, which is useful for your home so we do not need to store it in our parish facility. You are cordially invited to join our Faith Community for Daily Mass, celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, meditate upon the suffering of Christ for the Stations of the Cross on each Friday, pray the Rosary before Mass, pray for the homebound ministry or join them to visit the sick and the elderly, contribute food for the poor and join us to spend some quiet time in front of the Blessed Sacrament for Adoration to pray for the Church and family! Please keep the Elects and Candidates for Full Communion in your prayers. They are with us for these forty days of their journey of Faith and they are preparing themselves to join the Church with the Sacrament of Initiation and Full Communion at the Easter Vigil. We thank the core team who assists them and to you for praying for them. May the Lord continue to bless upon us during this Lenten season! ANN: 8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays 5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.) 7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language) by Barbara & Clarence Leingang The custom of adopting a saint’s name at Confirmation was not found originally in the Early Church but came later. Taking on a saint’s name at Confirmation was done for a couple of reasons. 1. To adopt the saint as a special heavenly patron. 2. To honor a saint to whom one had a special devotion. This opportunity helped the confirmandi to develop his understanding and his reliance on the Communion of Saints. The practice of selecting a new name of a patron saint has not been encouraged in some dioceses. Rather, the tradition of not picking a new name at confirmation is being promoted. This is based on the idea that the person (confirmandi) already has a Christian name given to him/her at Baptism. By using the same name it will serve as a link between the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, the two sacrament of Christian Initiation. The USCCB in 2000 decreed in the Latin Rite, that Confirmation shall be conferred between the age of discretion (7 yrs.) and 16 years of age. This went into effect on July 1, 2002. It should be noted the age can be changed by a Diocese if there is a grave reason or imminent death. As a matter of record, at the beginning of World War II, many of the faithful were confirmed as young as 6 years of age once they had received their First Communion. The threat of war pushed this into the realm of “grave reason.” ST. Many thanks to Jim Raden and Karen Knobbe for designating the funds from their special events for the dishwasher. There are special instructions for the use of the dishwasher. The instructions are posted on the dishwasher and it is imparative that these be followed! The dishwasher has a water saver. The rinse water will be used for the next wash load. This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but you can eat eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though made with animal fat. Fasting means: limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesdays and Good Friday. On fast days 2 small meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength. However, the 2 small meals together may not equal 1 full meal. SIGNS OF THE SESON MOUNT OF TRANSFIGURATION The traditional location for the mount of transfiguration is the Mount Tabor, about 11 miles west of the Sea of Galilie. Mount Tabor rises about 1,800 feet above the level plain below. It was identified as the site of the transfiguration as early as the third century by the theologian Origen.
