The North Shore Middle School newspaper was honored with a Gold Crown
Award during the 90th Scholastic
Convention at Columbia University in
New York City.
Galena Park ISD Superintendent, Dr. Angi
Williams, and students from CMS band & choir,
GPMS choir, NSMS band & choir, WAMS choir,
GPHS band & choir and NSSH band & choir
display the 32 UIL Sweepstakes trophies and
plaques earned during the UIL Concert & SightReading contests!
Paul Johnson, Technology Education Instructor
and Team KAOS Robotics Coach at Galena Park High
School, was named Teacher of the Year at the South
Texas VEX Robotics Championship Tournament.
Culinary Arts students baked a number of
culinary delights for the Jacinto City/Galena Park
Rotary Cake Auction, which raised over $6,000
for student scholarships. Students also served
guests their meals and demonstrated true GPISD
hospitality.

Garrett Cross, head track & field coach at North
Shore Senior High School, was named the 2013
Sectional Coach of the Year by the University
Interscholastic League (UIL) and the National
Federation of State High
School Associations.

North Shore Senior High School’s
Kerwin Roach became the Class 5A
triple jump STATE CHAMPION! He
jumped a personal best 50’ 2 1/4” to
clinch the top title, beating second
place by just over a foot.
With 10 points, 10 rebounds and a
relentless defensive effort, Jarrey
Foster was named the 2014 Basketball
Championship Game MVP. Fortunately for
North Shore, he returns this year to help
the Mustangs defend their state title.

The North Shore Mustangs Boys Baskteball team defeated
Converse Judson 57-45 to bring home the first ever state title. The
Mustangs team ranked number three in the nation!
The North Shore Drumline earned their
fourth consecutive state title in Scholastic
Marching World Class!

Registration Information: Age Requirements
Pre-kindergarten – a child must be four
years old on or before September 1, 2014,
and meet eligibility requirements. Prekindergarten is a half-day program.
2014-2015 school registration is available
online at www.galenaparkisd.com under
the PARENTS tab. For parents enrolling
new students online, the campus will need
three items:
1. a copy of the child’s birth certicate
2. the child’s social security card
3. proof of residency (current utility bill*
or lease agreement)
Kindergarten – a child must be five years
old on or before September 1, 2014.
Kindergarten is a full day program.
First Grade – a child must be six years old
on or before September 1, 2014.
Parents may also enroll with the assistance
of campus staff. Please see each campus’
webpage for specific dates and times.

We are excited to welcome all of our students
and parents back to school on August 25,
2014! In the coming days, our schools will
be very lively places as the beautiful buildings
and classrooms of GPISD are readied for
another year by custodians, food service
staff, teachers, and administrators. This time
of year brings an electric enthusiasm to our
campuses as our teachers and staff prepare
the classrooms and excitedly await the arrival
of students. The exceptional professionals of
this district stand prepared to join our students
on a journey of discovery this 2014-15 school
year. GPISD has a long history of educational
excellence and commitment to students. This
district was founded on the principle that every
student deserves an equal chance for success.
With every new and engaging experience,
our students are better positioned to live and
work in a complex world. When students walk
into the classrooms of GPISD this year, they
are not just walking into a room with desks
and books; they are walking into their future.

New Graduation Requirements
Choose Your Path with ENDORSEMENTS
Texas House Bill 5 (HB5) impacted a number of areas in the Texas Education
Code, including a significant change to the requirements for high school
graduation and graduation planning. New for the 2014-15 school year, incoming
9th grade students are now required to focus their elective courses toward five
broad categories referred to as endorsements: business and industry; arts and
humanities; public service; multidisciplinary studies; or STEM (science, technology,
engineering and mathematics). Students can choose more than one endorsement
and will earn a seal on their diploma and transcript for each endorsement
completed.
Students earn endorsements by completing 19 core credits and the curriculum
requirements for the selected endorsement(s) (differs for each endorsement), for
a total of 26 credits. Students may also earn additional seals on their diploma and
transcript for outstanding performance in: Dual Credit; Bilingualism; AP Exams;
College Prep Testing; and Business Certification. This new system is designed to
allow students to gain more individual control and flexibility over their education
by enabling them to either pursue a traditional path into colleges and universities,
or move directly into the workforce to help fill what business leaders indicate is a
critical skills shortage.

on SAFETY
What Galena Park ISD is doing to ensure the safety of its
students and personnel
SAFETY
To create an optimal learning environment, GPISD places a great emphasis on the
safety and security of our students and employees. With this as our top priority, the
District and the Board of Trustees are committed to taking all measures to ensure
students walk into a safe and secure building every day. Because of our dedication
to safety and security, we train our staff every year on
emergency protocols and procedures. We also train
all of our officers in non-violent crisis intervention as
well as active-shooter and emergency response drills.
In addition to having well-trained personnel, we
have also upgraded our facilities. In the past
year we added more security gates and card
access readers that allow us to better secure
our buildings. Furthermore, security video
systems at all secondary campuses were upgraded to state of the art video technology.
Along with securing our schools and training
our personnel, our students’ health is also a
priority. Every head coach of every sport is
required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.
Each camera on a campus, and each hour
of training our staff receives is part of a
process we undertake each year to
ensure our schools are safe and secure,
and our students are in a setting that
promotes learning and growth.

Questions
Who can receive free meals?
Children who live in a household in which the income is within
the Federal Income Guidelines free limits are eligible for free
meals. Additionally, if one member of the household is currently
receiving assistance (benefits) from SNAP/Food Stamps, TANF,
or FDPIR, all children in the household are eligible for free
meals.
Do I need to fill out an application for each child?
No. One application covers all children in a household, although
you must reapply each year.
My child’s application was approved last year. Do I need to
fill out another one?
Yes. Your child’s application is only valid for that school year and
for the first few days of this school year. You must send in a new
application unless the Student Nutrition Services Dept. told you
that your child is eligible for the new school year.
May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen?
You or your child do not have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for
your child to receive free or reduced-price meals.
What are the prices for breakfast and lunch?
Elementary and secondary student breakfast is free to all
students.
Elementary lunch is $1.45 and secondary lunch is $1.65.
Reduced-price lunch is $0.25.
Is there a difference in the way a regular price, reducedprice, or free meal is purchased?
There is no difference. ALL students pay for the meal the same
way – by typing in their student meal account number.
How do I register?
You can register confidentially online at https://mealapps.
galenaparkisd.com, or in person at the Galena Park ISD
Administration Building located at 14705 Woodforest Blvd.,
Houston, TX 77015, or at your child’s campus.
Note: It takes approximately 10 days to process an application.
Students must pay for their meals until the application has been
approved. Applying early is the best way to ensure free or
reduced-price meals on the first day of school.

Shore fue honrado con el Premio

Sweepstakes obtenidos durante los concursos UIL
de Concierto y Lectura a Primera Vista.
Los estudiantes de Artes Culinarias hornearon un
sinnúmero de delicias para la Subasta de Pasteles
del Club Rotario de Jacinto City/Galena Park, en
la cual se recaudaron más de $6,000 para becas
estudiantiles. Los estudiantes también sirvieron
a los invitados sus alimentos y demostraron la
hospitalidad de GPISD.

Requisitos de edad
La inscripción para el año escolar 2014-2015
está disponible en línea en www.galenaparkisd.
com bajo la pestaña para PARENTS. Para
padres de familia que inscriben a nuevos
estudiantes en línea, la escuela necesitará
una copia del acta de nacimiento del niño, la
tarjeta del seguro social y prueba de domicilio,
la cual puede ser el recibo más reciente de luz,
agua o gas, o el contrato de arrendamiento.
No se acepta ningún otro tipo de recibos.
Pre-kinder – un niño debe tener cuatro años de
edad en o antes del 1º de septiembre de 2014,
y cumplir con los requisitos de elegibilidad.
Pre-kinder es un programa de medio día de
instrucción.
Los padres también pueden inscribir a sus hijos
con la ayuda del personal de la escuela. Por

Nuevos Requisitos de Graduación
Elige tu Carrera con ÁREAS DE CONCENTRACIÓN
El Proyecto de Ley 5 (HB5) de Texas impactó a un sinnúmero de áreas en el Código
de Educación de Texas, incluyendo un cambio significativo a los requisitos de
graduación de preparatoria y la planeación para graduación. Comenzando el año
escolar 2014-15, los estudiantes que ingresan al 9º grado ahora están obligados
a enfocar sus cursos opcionales hacia cinco amplias categorías referidas como
áreas de concentración en: comercio e industria; artes y humanidades; servicios
públicos; estudios multidisciplinarios; o STEM (ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y
matemáticas). Los estudiantes pueden elegir más de un área de concentración y
obtendrán un sello en su diploma y certificación de créditos (transcript) por cada
concentración terminada.
Los estudiantes obtienen áreas de concentración al completar 19 créditos
básicos y los requisitos del plan de estudios para el/las área/s de concentración
selecta/s (diferente para cada área de concentración) para un total de 26 créditos.
Los estudiantes también pueden obtener sellos adicionales en sus diplomas y
transcripts por desempeño sobresaliente en: Crédito Doble; Bilingüismo; Exámenes
de Colocación Avanzada (AP, por sus siglas en inglés); Exámenes de Preparación
para universidad; y Certificación en Comercio. Este nuevo sistema está diseñado
para permitir a los estudiantes obtener más control individual y flexibilidad
sobre su educación al permitirles seguir una carrera tradicional en los colegios y
universidades o moverse directamente a la fuerza laboral para suplir la escasez de
destrezas que los líderes empresariales afirman que existe.

Frecuentes
¿Quién puede recibir comidas gratuitas?
Los niños que viven en una familia en la cual el ingreso está dentro del
límite gratuito de los Lineamientos del Ingreso Federal son elegibles
para las comidas gratuitas. Además, si un miembro de la familia
actualmente está recibiendo asistencia (beneficios) de SNAP/Food
Stamps, TANF o FDPIR, todos los niños de la familia son elegibles
para recibir comidas gratuitas.
¿Tengo que llenar una solicitud por cada hijo?
No. Una solicitud cubre a todos los niños de la familia, aunque tiene
que volver a solicitar los beneficios cada año.
La solicitud de mi hijo fue aprobada el año pasado. ¿Tengo
que llenar otra?

SEGURIDAD
Para crear un ambiente óptimo de aprendizaje, GPISD pone un gran énfasis en la
seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y empleados. Con esto como nuestra principal
prioridad, el Distrito y los miembros de la Mesa Directiva están comprometidos
en tomar todas las medidas necesarias para garantizar que los estudiantes
caminen todos los días en un edificio seguro. Debido a nuestra dedicación por la
seguridad, cada año le brindamos capacitación al personal sobre los protocolos y
procedimientos de emergencia. También capacitamos a todos nuestros oficiales
en intervención de crisis sin violencia así como en simulacros de tiradores activos
y de respuesta en caso de emergencia. Además de tener
personal bien capacitado, también hemos modernizado
nuestras instalaciones. El año pasado agregamos más
entradas de seguridad y lectores de tarjetas de acceso
que nos permiten una mejor seguridad en nuestros
edificios. Así mismo, los sistemas de video de
seguridad en todos los planteles de secundaria
y preparatoria fueron actualizados con lo último
en tecnología de video. Sumado a la seguridad
de nuestras escuelas y capacitación de nuestro
personal, la salud de nuestros estudiantes
es también una prioridad. Por lo tanto, cada
entrenador principal de cada deporte está obligado
a estar certificado en Respiración Cardiopulmonar
(CPR, por sus siglas en inglés) y Primeros Auxilios.
Cada cámara en un plantel y cada hora de
capacitación que recibe nuestro personal es
parte de un proceso por el que pasamos cada
año para garantizar que nuestras escuelas
estén seguras, y que nuestros estudiantes
se encuentren en un ambiente que
promueva el aprendizaje y el crecimiento.
Sí. La solicitud de su hijo es válida solamente para ese año escolar
y para los primeros días de este año escolar. Usted debe enviar una
nueva solicitud a menos que el Depto. de Servicios de Nutrición del
Estudiante le haya dicho que su hijo es elegible para el nuevo año
escolar.
¿Puedo solicitar los beneficios si alguien en mi familia no es
un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos?
Sí. Usted o su hijo no tienen que ser ciudadanos de los Estados
Unidos para que su hijo califique para recibir comidas gratuitas o de
precio reducido.
¿Cuáles son los precios de los desayunos y los almuerzos?
El desayuno para todos los estudiantes de primaria a preparatoria es
gratuito.
El costo del almuerzo en la primaria es $1.45 y para la secundaria y
la preparatoria es $1.65. El precio reducido para el almuerzo es 25
centavos.
¿Existe una diferencia en la forma en la que se compra una
comida a precio regular, reducido o gratuito?
No hay ninguna diferencia. TODOS los estudiantes pagan por la
comida de la misma manera - solo marcan el número de su cuenta de
comida.
¿Cómo me registro?
Puede registrarse confidencialmente en línea en https://mealapps.
galenaparkisd.com, o en persona en el Edificio Administrativo de
Galena Park ISD ubicado en el 14705 Woodforest Blvd., Houston, TX
77015, o en la escuela a la que asiste su hijo.
Nota: Se toma aproximadamente 10 días para procesar una solicitud.
Los estudiantes deben pagar por sus comidas hasta que la solicitud
haya sido aprobada. Enviar la solicitud con anticipación es la mejor
manera de garantizar las comidas gratuitas o de precio reducido el
primer día de clases.
