We had our first meeting on Tuesday, October 2. It was attended by approximately 50 people and we heard a presentation by Principal Alban. Her presentation was informative and we hope to continue the dialogue on the topics she presented: recent Barnsley academic achieve‐
ment and student, parent, and importantly staff climate. Thanks to all who participated in the meeting. Please come and bring another Barnsley friend to the next meet‐
ing November 6. Although not yet confirmed, we antici‐
pate having a presentation on Internet safety at that meet‐

As Barnsley’s cluster rep I work with cluster reps from the 5 other elementary schools, Wood Middle School and Rockville High School to raise issues of con‐
cern for the schools in the cluster to MCPS. Our Community Superintendent (who our Principal re‐
ports to), Mark Kelsch, retired this past June after more that 35 years with MCPS. Sherry Liebes has been ap‐
pointed as our new Community Superintendent. Dr. Liebes worked as the Director of School Performance un‐
der Mr. Kelsch, so she is well familiar with our school. The cluster recently provided our comments on the FY09 Capital Budget. We had a follow up meeting with the MCPS Director of Long Range Planning and his staff. We expressed our concern that Barnsley STILL needs more black top space. In addition, we raised the issue that while we have 4 portables and are projected to be over capacity for the foreseeable future, we are not on the schedule to have the 4 classroom additions built. We will be giving our testimony to the Board of Education later in the Fall. Wood Middle School is a phase one school for Middle School Reform. This means that the new Middle School reform initiatives are being implemented at Wood this year. This has resulted in among otherthings, addi‐

Barnsley is working hard to make the school more environmentally friendly! This year Barnsley admin‐
istrators, teachers, students, and parents will work together on a School Eco Response Team (SERT) to recycle, save energy, and conserve water. This effort is part of the Montgomery County Public School “Green Schools Program” which is helping to re‐
duce energy and water use and conserve resources to reduce pollution, save money, and make our planet healthier. Barnsley will be increasing efforts to recycle cans, bottles, paper, and cardboard and we’ll all be trying our best to make sure the lights are turned off when they are not in use. The PTA will also be helping to support the program and parents will receive up‐
dates, “Green Tips” for saving energy, and other ways to save money while also helping to save the environment and reduce global warming. We’re looking for more parents to get involved in this pro‐

Corrections to the School Directory
In the way of lost‐sock black holes, several things associated with the Directory went missing! In the week after the Directory was delivered to the printer, 31 forms showed up in the Directory Mailbox at Barnsley. We celebrate their return from the lost and apologize if your information was not included properly in the original printing. A Directory Supplement will be published next week which will include information received from those forms, as well as from the Corrections/Additions forms received this week. If you have not sent in your correction, please do so on Monday! On page 4 of the Directory the Staff List is incorrect, the list should read… Grade 4—[email protected] Grade 3—[email protected] Ms Zoll, last year a Third‐Grade Teacher, and Ms Woehrle, last year a Fourth‐Grade Teacher, switched grades! My sincerest apologies to Ms Zoll (4 letters in Zoll—she teaches Grade 4) and Ms Woehrle (Went‐back‐to‐Grade‐3) and to their 44 students for the mix‐up! Pages 18 & 19 are incorrect as well, in that they list the wrong grade for both teachers and their classes, but the correct grade is listed for each student in the student listings. In its travel from the relative safety of the PDF file to the printer’s negative, the word HOME went missing! The Comforts of Home ad from page 51 (Barbara Ann Docal) is repeated below. La primer sesión del año de la PTA fue el Martes 2 de Octubre. El presidente David Hartley y la vice presidenta ejecutiva Amy
Kines le recordaron al grupo que la meta de la PTA es involucrar a más gente en la comunidad escolar. La vice presidenta de programas Mary Carvajal mencionó futuras actividades familiares y después de la escuela: Manos-en Ciencia y una clase de artes manuales, noche de cine en Noviembre y la feria de Ciencia en Enero.
Luke Wagner, presidente del programa de Lenguajes Extranjeros en las Escuelas Elementales (FLES) dijo que hay suficientes niños
para dos clases de Español. Sólamente unos cuantos estudiantes se registraron para los lenguajes de Francés y Chino, así que no tendremos estos lenguajes en Barnsley este año, pero estas clases las tienen en otras escuelas. Contáctese con Luke at

Deb Walls es la presidenta Halloween Spooktacular, Sábado 27 de Octubre, de 6 a 9. Este divertido evento familiar contará

El año pasado se aprobaron fondos para la red cibernetica de la PTA. El grupo acordó aumentar el presupuesto a $ 70 de $ 45.

La directora Kristin Alban nos recordó a todos que los padres están invitados a visitar las clases de sus hijos el Lunes 8 de Octubre,
de 9:30 hasta las 11:30. La ayudante de Almuerzo/Recreo Ashley Holmes ha dejado Barnsley y se necesitan padres monitores para
el almuerzo/recreo. Entrenamiento empezará pronto. La maestra de Quinto grado Amanda Stout dirigió el grupo. Entre otros maestros o personal presentes estuvieron Rebecca Lobel, Katie Kochan, Christa Gordon, Vera Follain-Grisell y Stephanie Brant,

Amy Hartley, la representante de grupos de Rockville, reportó que el super intendente Mark Kelsch se retiró y fue reemplazado por
Sherry Liebes, anteriormente director de funcionamiento de escuelas. La expansión de la superficie bituminosa en Barnsley ha sido
