Thoughts From this Sunday’s Readings by Fr. John

Last Sunday the Gospel message was, “repent or perish.” Today’s
message is about the healing that occurs in reconciliation. According to the Marian Webster Dictionary reconcile means “to restore
to friendship or harmony”; it implies healing an existing relationship. In our readings today we hear about a lost son returned to
his father and we receive a reminder that God calls all of us to be
ministers of reconciliation to the world.
Many great writers call the prodigal son the finest short story ever
written. In about five hundred words Jesus explains the foundation
of our faith: God is merciful and loves us unconditionally. No
matter what we do, no matter how horrible we think our sin is or
how far we stray, God our loving father who “formed [our] inmost
being” (Ps. 139:13) wants to restore our relationship with him.
God loves sinners!
Like the younger son in the story all we have to do to reconcile our
relationship to God is come to our senses, acknowledge our pigpen
of sinfulness, repent (change our behavior and leave the pigpen
behind) and walk back toward God. Reconciliation comes only
after repentance. This is hard work. But there is an even bigger
challenge.
that since we are reconciled to God through the sacrifice of Jesus,
we are obligated to be God’s ambassadors of reconciliation to
others. God does not count our sins against us therefore we should
not count the sins of other people against them. There is a bit of
the older son skulking in all of us. Our job is rise above our selfrighteousness so we can bring about reconciliation in our families,
our neighborhoods, our parish, our schools, our jobs, our country
and the world. True reconciliation begins when each one of us
reaches out to reconcile with each other.
God of compassion,
you await the sinner’s return
and prepare a feast to welcome home the lost.
Save us from the temptations
that draw us away from you.
Lead us back by the constancy of your love,
that we may take our place in your household
and gladly share our inheritance with others.
Grant this through Christ, our liberator from sin,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
holy and mighty God for ever and ever.
AMEN.

Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma
Deja el pecado, porque Él no te va a dejar a ti. "Conviértete…" -esta fue la voz que escuchamos el primer día de cuaresma, cuando
recibimos la ceniza sobre nuestra cabeza, como señal de la
humildad que es propia de este tiempo litúrgico. Pues bien, el
evangelio de hoy es quizá la más bella pintura de ese proceso de la
conversión: el hijo más pequeño de este padre amoroso finalmente
dejó el pecado y volvió a casa. Cuanto más meditamos en cada
detalle y aspecto de esta parábola, más vemos que la propia vida
queda retratada ante nuestros ojos.
Uno que acoge a los pecadores. Todo empezó con las críticas de
los fariseos: "Este anda con pecadores..." Ellos hablaban así como
un modo agrio de descalificar a Jesús y a su ministerio. Podríamos
traducir su murmuración con estas palabras: "¿Cómo podría este
hombre ser un verdadero profeta, y no hablemos del Mesías? ¡Mira
nada más con quiénes le gusta andar!" La parábola del hijo pródigo y del padre compasivo es una gran respuesta a estas críticas,
como si Cristo les estuviera diciendo: "¿Y es que Dios podría ser
de otro modo? ¿Esperarías menos de Dios?" .

Esta es la primera conversión y la más fundamental de todas: no
somos Dios, y si jugamos a ser Dios terminamos destruyéndonos a

tomar uno de dos caminos: rebelión, ira y desesperación, por un
lado; humildad, contrición y conversión por el otro. Felizmente, el
muchacho de la parábola tomó este segundo camino, el de la vuelta
a casa, y encontró los brazos abiertos de su padre amoroso -- una
imagen llena de ternura que describe bien cómo Dios misericordioso está aguardando por cada uno de nosotros.
¿Y el Hermano Mayor? Debemos decir una palabra sobre el
hermano mayor. Sabemos que representa ante todo la actitud
recelosa y ácida de los fariseos. Sin embargo, ahí no acaba todo.
Es bien posible que represente también algo de nosotros y nuestros
egoísmos y desconfianzas, de nuestros celos y mezquindades.
Podemos preguntarnos, en realidad, si nosotros celebramos
la misericordia de Dios cuando llega a las vidas de los demás,
sobre todo si esos "demás" son nuestros enemigo s, rivales o gente
extraña. Mientras conservamos, pues, delante de nuestros ojos,
la imagen preciosa del Dios que perdona y se compadece,
pidámosle que nos dé de su Espíritu Santo para amar como él ama.
Sea ese el fruto de esta cuaresma.

Fourth Sunday in Lent
Neisa Pamfil who ser ved as a Catholic
Charities counselor at Holy Trinity for several years continues to struggle with
ALS. We all remember her kindness and
compassion in helping individuals and families during troubled times. Neisa was diagnosed with ALS approximately 2 years ago
at which time she move to Tennessee to be
near her daughter Samantha as she started college. Her illness has
progressed and she is totally immobile. The cost of her care has
also increased to an average of $1,200 weekly. This is a cost that
can only be sustained by a multitude of friends and family. Holy
Trinity has been asked to contribute to this worthy cause for the
next three months in the amount of $500 per month.

direct deposit, (we ask that your donor information include Holy
Trinity) or you may send donations to Holy Trinity indicating that

scholarships to Holy Trinity students either going to or attending a
Catholic High School. The Donald B. Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund is intended to provide financial aid to students from Holy
Trinity parish interested in furthering his/her Catholic education.
The award will be granted on a combined basis of financial need,
academic achievement, community involvement and a 250-word
essay on one of the Knights of Columbus principles (Charity,
Unity, Fraternalism, Patriotism). Applications can be obtained

20% of families locally don’t know when they’ll receive
their next meal. The Knights of Columbus Council 8081
are sponsoring the 40 Cans for Lent program. Last year
we raised over 1,800 pounds of food, which was distributed to local
food banks including St. Vincent DePaul. This year our goal is
2,500 pounds. There is a Knights of Columbus box in the vestibule
to place your donations. We are asking all parishioners to bring
one can of food for every day of Lent. Our mission is to ease hunger locally by providing food to those who need it most through the
