WOW! are the first words that come to
mind. On Oct. 27 the Archdiocese of
Galveston-Houston loaded 150 teenagers on two separate planes and headed
to Atlanta for the National Catholic
Youth Conference, commonly known as
NCYC. What an amazing experience it
was.
We sang, danced, prayed, worshiped,
spoke, listened, traded goodies, made
friends, and celebrated Mass with over
19,000 other Catholic Christians from
all over the United States. It was literally like a rock concert for God, with
teens arriving hours ahead of time just
to get floor seats to be closer to the altar, and to the presenters.
The conference was held in Atlanta at
the Olympic Plaza, so there was so
much to see and do. It was such an incredible experience to put the scope of
our faith family into perspective—we

cosas buenas, hizimos nuevos amigos y
celebramos Misa con más de 19,000 católicos cristianos de todos los Estados
Unidos. Fué como un concierto de rock
para Dios con jóvenes que llegaron temprano para escojer sillas cercana al altar y
cerca a los presentadores.
La conferencia se llevó a cabo en la
Plaza Olímpica de Atlanta donde había
mucho que ver y hacer. Fue una experiencia increible al poner al alcanse nuestra fé
de familia en prospecto—¡nosotros cele-

celebrated mass with 19,000 people! Which
seemed like a lot at the time, but to think that
we celebrate with at least a billion every Sunday is almost too much to comprehend.
What an extraordinary lesson for the seven
teens from St. Jerome’s to get just a glimpse of
their faith community, and to be in a place
where some 18,993 other teens prayed as you
do, remembered Saints as you do, and blessed
themselves in the name of the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit as you do. It is not something I will ever forget.

DEAR PARISHIONERS,
Our parish plant continues to improve with a few new additions to
our facilities in the last couple of months, some of which you may
have not noticed.
1.The south side of the church has a new lighted covered walkway,
matching the front Kempwood side running from the south exit of
the vestibule, along the back side of the church. This was made
possible thanks to a nice gift from a very good parish-involved couple who are long-time parishioners.
2.There is a new lighted aluminum entrance canopy to “The Outback”,
as well as built-in closets for storage in the Outback garage. The
Reminder: NCYC will be in Ohio in ’09— latter is thanks to the labor & expertise of Alvin Hollas and Howthe cost will be about $700 per teen—we are ard Owens.
3.KC Council 4550 donated a Monument to the Unborn, 1200 lbs. of
taking donations. Buy those ice creams! Ω

4.The Early Childhood Center has a new playground, next to the present one on the Friendship Rd. side of their building. They also have
a new brightly colored piece of equipment donated by All Play Inc.
after it was used by the evacuees at the Astrodome. Troop 152’s
help in setting it up was a factor in our receiving it. Swings and
other equipment were relocated there from behind the old convent.
5.We have over 110 new parking spaces with a 2nd new parking lot
behind the old convent to park an additional 45 cars, and a new angled parking on the south side of the Hollister lot that gives us another 10 spaces and a wider drive way for cars to exit. This lot is in
addition to the new 68-car lot behind the Scout House on the west
side of our property.
And there are still a few more things coming soon, like: 1) the relocation of Troop 152 to their new place on Friendship and the reST. JEROME TEENS ENJOY a few minutes with Jesse,

ESTIMADOS PARROQUIANOS:
Nuestro plan de la parróquia para mejorías continúa con unas cuantas adiciones
nuevas a nuestro edificio en los ultimos dos meses, ustedes tal ves lo habrán notado.
1. El costado súr de la iglesia tiene un nuevo camino cubierto iluminádo, igualmente al
frente en el lado de la calle Kempwood siguiendo desde la salida súr del zaguán
junto a la parte de atrás de la iglesia. Esto se llevó a cabo gracias a un regalo ofrecido por una pareja de párrocos que hán asistido a esta parróquia por mucho
tiempo.
2. Hay una nueva entráda cubierta ilumináda al “Outback,” y también hay roperos
construídos en el garage del Outback para usar como almacénes. La construcción
de roperos fue ofrecída por Alvin Hollas y Howard Owens—muchas gracias por su
labór y experiencia.
3. Los Caballeros de Colón del Concilio 4550 donáron El Monumento del No Nacido,
hecho de 1200 libras de granito negro. Está ubicado opuestamente al monumento
de los Diez Mandamientos, cerca de la entrada de calle Kempwood y la entrada a
la capilla. Éste monumento vá a hacer dedicado el Domingo 22 de Enero 2006.
Éste monumento está inscrito con una cita bella del Papa Juan Pablo II.
4. El Centro de Niños Infantíl tiene un campo nuevo de juegos, a un lado del que
estás en el edificio en la calle de Friendship. También tienen un gran equipo nuevo
de juegos de colores brillántes que fué donado por All Play Inc. después de que
fué usado por los evacuádos del Astrodomo. La ayuda recibída por la Tropa 152
fué un factor muy grande en haber recibído estos juegos. Columpios y otros equipos fueron movídos del convento anterior ha este nuevo campo.
5. Tenemos más de 110 espácios nuevos de estacionamiento con el segundo espacio
nuevo detrás del convento anterior el cuál tiene 45 espacios adicionales para estacionarse, y el nuevo espacio angulado al sur en el lado de la calle Hollister que
ofrece 10 espacios más y lugar más amplio para salida de los carros. Éste lote es

Recordatorio: NCYC va a
llevarce a cabo en el estado
de Ohio en el año 2009 —el
costo va hacer aproximadamente $700 por jóven—estamos aceptando donaciones. ¡Compren helados! Ω

How we helped,
and were blessed by,
an evacuee family
I first met the Vu family on Labor Day. My family
(Frank, Scott and myself), along with Fr. Mike, Dcn.
Arturo, and a number of other adults and young people were sorting food and clothing donated by St
Jerome families in response to relief appeals for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Vu family came by
looking for assistance. They had been staying in a
downtown shelter and were ready to move.
This family touched our hearts, and by the end of
the day, they were already a part of the St. Jerome
family. They were invited to stay temporarily in one
of the parish’s newly purchased homes on Friendship

Girls in Metairie La. and was hoping to continue once it reopened, but in the meantime...)

ropa y comida donadas por muchos parrócos de San Jerónimo y otras
partes de Spring Branch fueron recibidas para entregarlas a centros de

Conocí a la familia Vu en

y adultos estában apartando
comida y ropa que había sido traida por familias gentiles de San Jeróninio.
La familia Vu llegó buscando ayuda. Ellos habían
estado viviendo en un refugio en el centro de la ciudad.
Esta familia tocó nuestros corazónes y antes que
terminara el día, ya éran
parte de nuestra familia de
San Jerónimo. El Diacono

invitaron a esta familia
para que se quedaran en

buen donacion. Ellos fueron en verdad un parte de
nuestra familia.
Ésta familia dejó una
gran impresion en aquellos
que tuvimos el honor y privilegio de conocerlos. Éllos confiaron en Dios como
su proveedor.

match? Well then, you’re
talking about St. Jerome. It is
well known in the Spring
Branch Community and well
beyond that we are doers!
Let’s highlight three of the
ways we are sharing in our
community.
Each year there is an
ALL School Thanksgiving
Food Drive collection.
Boxes are placed within each
classroom and filled by the
students. At the end of the
week, one box is set aside
for the All-School Thanksgiving Mass as a symbol
while the rest of the boxes
are taken by the Student
Council to St. Vincent de
Paul’s pantry to be bagged
for distribution. Don’t worry
the symbolic box is taken
there also after Mass.
There is also a Caring
Package Gift collection that
occurs each year also prior to
Thanksgiving. The junior
high students collect snacks,
toiletries, paper, and even
notes of encouragement etc.

Mary’s. Then on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving the
eighth graders get the pleasure of delivering the Care
Package to the Seminary.
Then comes Sharing
Sunday: the COLLABORATIVE effort made yearly by
our Parish family. Individuals and groups (such as Bible
study groups, the school
children, Life Teen, etc.) join
with St. Vincent de Paul
members to supply families
with toys and clothes for
their Christmas holiday celebration. We have even had
periodic donations from
STUDENTS OF ST. JEROME with some of the many toys they collected during the school’s food drive .
agencies outside of our parish. Life Teen has donated
their time and energy wrapping the gifts. When we say
collaborative–we mean just
that! The climax occurs the
few days prior to Christmas,
this year it is expected to be
December 19-22 when individual families are seen in
the St. Vincent de Paul office
for their needs. Besides the
food they receive, parents are
given a voucher stating the
gender and age of their children for Santa’s other helpers
to give them the toys. These
helpers bag the gifts so that a
surprise is maintained. Many
fifth graders had the opportunity of participating in the
day of giving and experienced the joy of sharing as
they personally connected
with the families – a good,
life-long lesson for them!

St. Jerome Seniors
honor longlong-time member
Congratulations to BILLIE SHIELDS, who has been selected to be St. Jerome’s “Senior Adult of the Year, 2005.”
She was honored by the Archdicese at the Annual Senior
Adult Recognition Banquet on Sunday, Nov. 6. Members
of the St. Jerome Adult Club were there to cheer her on.
Billie became a Catholic in 1962. She took her instruction from Father Raye and was baptized in the little chapel
(that was made from the garage)
attached to the original rectory
that was then on Hollister. She
has been active in service to her
church ever since that time.
She and her husband, John,
first worked with the church’s
teen-age program. She has been
an Extraordinary Minister of the
Holy Eucharist for some 25 years,
and has always helped with the
church’s Fall Festival. She is hospitality chairman for the Senior

Adult’s Club and prints their
newsletter. She often takes responsibility for the receptions
that follow funerals.
What a wonderful friend and first class worker this gracious lady is! She deserves all the recognition, praise and
admiration we can heap upon her. Thank you Billie, for all
you do for your friends and for your parish! Ω

Señora Adulta Del 2005” de
San Jerónimo. Ella fué honorada por la Arquediócesis

Señores Adultos el Domingo, 6 de Noviembre.

animarla.
Billie se convirtió Católica en 1962. Ella tomo sus
instruciones del Padre

de San Vicente de Paul para suplementar a las familias con juguetes y ropa
para la celebración de Navidad. Hemos
tenidos donaciones de agencias afuera
de nuestra parroquia. Life Teen a donado su tiempo y energía empacando
regalos. Cuando decimos colaborativo—¡decimos eso mismo!
La culminación ocurre unos dias
antes de Navidad, este año se espera
ser Diciembre 19-22 cuando familias
son vistas en la oficina de San Vicente
de Paul para obtener sus necesidades.
Aparte de comida, los padres reciben
un papel con la edad y género de sus
niños para que los ayudantes de Santa
les den regalos.
Estos ayudantes embolsan los regalos para que sea sorpresa. Muchos
alumnos de quinto grado han participado en el día de dar los regalos y han
sentido el gozo que se siente de compartir con estas familias—una lección
de vida.
Que en este tiempo de compartir,
seas lleno del amor de Cristo que tiene
almacenado para todos de la parróquia
de San Jerónimo. Ω
