Pastor’s Corner
Lent has started. Jesus teaches us in today’s gospel that
we will be surrounded by difficulties. We are tempted
by a materialism that wants to replace God. Tempted by
avarice and greed, which are not satisfied with anything.
Tempted by pride and a lust for power that make
present in us the sin of discrimination and all sort of injustice. Desert and Lent are
important signs of our journey in this world. We are wandering pilgrims traveling
through life to meet our God. Going up to Jerusalem is hard and difficult, and one
cannot arrive there without going through the desert.
May God’s Word and Bread be the food nourishing our daily journey, especially during
this Lent.

Comenzamos la Cuaresma. En el evangelio de hoy Jesús nos enseña que las dificultades nos
van a rodear. Somos tentados por el materialismo que quiere sustituir a Dios. Somos tentados
por la avaricia que no se satisface con nada. Somos tentados por el orgullo y el ansia de poder
que actualiza entre nosotros los pecados de discriminación y toda clase de injusticias. Desierto
y cuarentena son para nosotros signos importantes de nuestro caminar por el mundo. Somos
errantes peregrinos que vamos por la vida al encuentro de Dios. La ascensión, la subida a
Jerusalén, es dura, difícil y no se llega sin pasar antes por el desierto.
Que la Palabra de Dios y el Pan sean alimento en nuestro diario caminar y en especial durante
esta Cuaresma.

We welcome our new auxiliary bishop, Msgr. Peter Baldacchino, who comes to us
after serving in the Turk and Caicos islands, a mission territory. Let us pray for him
that the Lord will bless his work among us.
Get ready for our Lenten Missions, March 24-26 in English, with Msgr. John Cipple,
and April 5 in Spanish, with Fr. Mario Vizcaíno. These days will give us an
opportunity to deepen our Christian life and help us prepare for Holy Week and
especially to celebrate the feast of the Resurrection.
The Emmaus retreat in English for men concludes today. The one for women will
be on the weekend of March 21-23. Keep them in your prayers
The Knights of Columbus are forming a council here at St. Hugh. I fully support
this organization for their many good works and invite all men to participate.
I hope to see you Friday, March 14 at Roberto Berrocal’s piano recital for the St.
Hugh-Steinway Concert Series. Roberto is a gifted musician and it will be a
wonderful evening.

Damos la bienvenida a nuestro nuevo obispo auxiliar, Mons. Peter Baldacchino, que viene
a Miami después de servir en las misiones de las islas Turcos y Caicos. Oremos por él
para que el Señor bendiga su labor entre nosotros.
Los invito a prepararse para las próximas misiones cuaresmales, en inglés del 24 al 26 de
marzo con Mons. John Cipple y en español el 5 de abril con el P. Mario Vizcaíno. Estos
días que nos darán la oportunidad de profundizar en nuestra vida cristiana y servirán
para prepararnos para la Semana Santa y especialmente celebrar la fiesta de la
Resurrección.
El retiro de Emaús en inglés para hombres termina hoy. El retiro para las mujeres será el
fin de semana de 21 al 23 de marzo. No dejen de rezar por ellas.
Los Caballeros de Colón están formando un concilio aquí en St. Hugh. Invito a todos los
hombes a participar.
Espero verlos el viernes 14 de marzo en el recital de piano de Roberto Berrocal como

Grove for Ghana: Germaine Mitchell

Msgr. Peter Baldacchino has been appointed by the Holy Father as the new auxiliary
bishop of Miami. Msgr. Baldacchino was born in Malta and is a priest of the Archdiocese of
Newark, NJ, who has spent 15 years in mission in the Turks and Caicos islands. He will be
ordained a bishop at St. Mary’s Cathedral on March 19. Let us keep Bishop-elect Baldacchino
in our prayers as he comes to minister among us.
Mons. Peter Baldacchino ha sido nombrado como obispo auxiliar de Miami por el Papa Francisco.
Mons. Baldacchino nació en Malta y ha sido sacerdote en la Arquidiócesis de Newark, NJ. Durante los
últimos 15 años ha trabajado en la misión de las islas Turcos y Caicos. Será ordenado obispo en la
catedral de St. Mary el 19 de marzo. Tengamos a Mons. Baldacchino en nuestras oraciones para que

The Health and Wellness Ministry will present a talk by David Vittoria, AVP, Director of
the South Miami Hospital Addiction Treatment & Recovery Program, on March 19 at 8 am.
The talk will center on how parents’ behavior with drugs and alcohol can influence children,
and what behaviors may indicate a child is presenting a problem.
El ministerio de salud y bienestar presentará una charla por David Vittoria, AVP, director del
centro de tratamiento de adicción del South Miami Hospital, el 19 de marzo a las 8 am. La charla
tratará sobre cómo el comportamiento de los padres con respecto a las drogas y el alcohol pueden

The catechumens taking part in RCIA at St. Hugh will be attending the rite of sending at St.
Mary’s Cathedral on March 9th. Please pray for them.

Starting March 6 weekday Masses will be celebrated in the main church instead of in the

The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA
Message for Lent 2014
He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich
(cf. 2 Cor 8:9)
As Lent draws near, I would like to offer some helpful thoughts on our path of conversion as
individuals and as a community. These insights are inspired by the words of Saint Paul: "For
you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he
became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor 8:9). So what is this
poverty by which Christ frees us and enriches us? It is his way of loving us, his way of being
our neighbor…Christ’s poverty which enriches us is his taking flesh and bearing our
weaknesses and sins as an expression of God’s infinite mercy to us.
It has been said that the only real regret lies in not being a saint (L. Bloy); we could also say
that there is only one real kind of poverty: not living as children of God and brothers and
sisters of Christ.

Se hizo pobre para enriquecernos con su pobreza
(cfr. 2 Cor 8, 9)
Con ocasión de la Cuaresma os propongo algunas reflexiones, a fin de que os sirvan para el
camino personal y comunitario de conversión. Comienzo recordando las palabras de san
Pablo: «Pues conocéis la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el cual, siendo rico, se hizo
pobre por vosotros para enriqueceros con su pobreza» (2 Cor 8, 9). ¿Qué es, pues, esta
pobreza con la que Jesús nos libera y nos enriquece? Es precisamente su modo de amarnos,
de estar cerca de nosotros… La pobreza de Cristo que nos enriquece consiste en el hecho
que se hizo carne, cargó con nuestras debilidades y nuestros pecados, comunicándonos la
misericordia infinita de Dios.
Se ha dicho que la única verdadera tristeza es no ser santos (L. Bloy); podríamos decir
también que hay una única verdadera miseria: no vivir como hijos de Dios y hermanos de
Cristo.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENT / MAYORDOMÍA DE TIEMPO Y TALENTO
Our Parish in Action/La parroquia en acción
The St. Hugh Great Gatsby Gala held on
February 21 was a complete success.
We congratulate the organizers and
thank those who attended.
La Gala Great Gatsby que tuvo lugar
el 21 de febrero fue un éxito total.
Felicitamos a las organizadoras y damos las
gracias a todos los asistentes.
Church and school staff members took part in a CPR
class sponsored by the Wellness Committee. The
committee has helped the church to acquire an
Ambulatory External Defibrillator (AED) and both CPR
and AED classes are required to operate the machine.
The committee will be offering a 2-hour CPR class to the
community here at St. Hugh in April, which also includes
training in First Aid. The fee is $30 per person. Please call
the office to register, as space is limited.
Miembros del personal de la oficina y del colegio participaron en una clase de RCP (resucitación
cardiopulmonar) patrocinada por el comité de salud. El comité ha ayudado en la adquisición de un
desfibrilador externo, y se requiere tomar este curso para poder utilizar la máquina.

Congratulations to the Students of the Month. These students were recognized during the
school mass on February 28th and presented with a special certificate.
The Great Gatsby Gala that was held on February 21st
was a tremendous success! More than 350 guests
attended the event held at the Cruz Building in Coconut
Grove. The venue was breathtaking and the energy
throughout the night was exhilarating as the St. Hugh
family gathered together to raise money for our school
and church.
We greatly appreciate all of the sponsors and the
supporters who purchased tickets and donated items for
the auction. A special thank you to Patricia Oliver and
Renne Domenech who co-chaired the gala committee
and worked tirelessly to ensure a successful event.
After all expenses were deducted, the gala raised $62,000
for our community. This is by far the largest amount
collected during this event since its inception 20 years
ago.

Meet the
St. Hugh School is pleased
to welcome Dr. Joseph
Mallet as our new school
counselor.
Dr. Mallet is a licensed
clinical psychologist
specializing in pediatric, adolescent and family
psychology with a subspecialty in parenting
plan consultations. He is also a certified Florida
Supreme Court family mediator.
His clinical interests include healthy
psychological development in children and
factors influencing success in children,
adolescents and families. He is a dynamic
speaker on topics including parenting and

attachment disorder, developmental concerns,
disruptive behavior in children, ADHD,
learning disabilities, emotional intelligence vs.
academic intelligence, social skills, divorce, and
factors influencing success in school age
children.
Dr. Mallet will be available to our students by
appointment on Tuesdays from 8:00 am to
1:00 pm.
Talent Show Auditions: Auditions for the
school talent show will be held on Tuesday,
March 11th
Confirmation Parent Meeting: A meeting for
parents of students receiving the sacrament of
confirmation will be held on March 12 at 7 pm
Box Tops Challenge Winners:
Congratulations to the second grade class for
collecting 525 Box Tops and winning the
challenge
Parent Prayer Group: Parents and
parishioners are invited to join in prayer each
Thursday at 8:00 am in the school chapel.
We will be praying for the special intentions
of our students.
HRPA Meeting: The monthly Homeroom
Parent Association meeting will be held on
March 5th to discuss upcoming events.
