Reflexión Del Párroco
Querida familia de Santo Rosario,
Hemos llegado al momento más sagrado del año para nosotros Cristianos. Durante la Semana Santa celebramos el misterio pascual en su plenitud. Vemos también nuestra respuesta inconsistente a la vida de Jesucristo en los gritos de “¡Hosanna, hosanna!” cuando
Jesús entró en Jerusalén y la misma gente gritando “¡Crucifícalo!”
unos días después. Es una semana de extremos.
Semana Santa es una buena oportunidad de revisar algunos costumbres y maneras de mostrar respeto en la semana más santa del
año. Nuestros jóvenes a veces (y incluso algunos adultos) no saben o
no recuerdan algunos de las cortesías y modales que fueron inculcados en nosotros y nuestros padres. Recordemos ahora algunos signos
de respeto que nos ayudan recordar que estamos en un espacio sagrado.
Gorras y Sombreros: En la tradición cristiana, los varones siempre saquen los sombreros de sus cabezas en una iglesia como signo
de respeto. Aun en las oficinas públicas y escuelas, se saquen las
gorras por que no es respetuoso. Antes, las mujeres tenían que cubrir
sus cabezas en el templo, pero ahora es opcional.
Agua Bendita: Cuando se entra una iglesia católica, yo siempre
busco el recipiente de agua bendita. La tradición es mojar un dedo
con el agua y persignarse como un recuerdo de nuestro bautismo, así
conectándonos a este espacio sagrado. Muchas veces se hacen lo
mismo en la salida como un recuerdo de nuestro compromiso bautismal, un compromiso que nos acompañe cuando salimos de la iglesia.
Genuflexión: La genuflexión es una muestra de respeto también.
Viene de la palabras francesas que quiere decir “doblar la rodilla”.
Se hizo eso en la presencia de reyes y otras personas importantes.
Ahora lo hacemos en la presencia del Santísimo que se queda en el
sagrario o tabernáculo. Cuando entra en una iglesia, busca la lámpara roja que significa que el Santísimo está presente. Normalmente,
hacemos una genuflexión antes de entrar en la banca, o cuando pasamos en frente del Santísimo. En la vejez (yo estoy entrando en ese me
parece) es más difícil bajar y/o subir de la genuflexión. En este caso
se puede hacer lo que nosotros dominicos se llaman la “inclinación
profunda”. Este es un gesto respetuoso también.

Pastor’s Reflection
Dear Family of Holy Rosary,
We have finally arrived at the most holy week of the year for us
Christians. We celebrate the fullness of Christ’s saving death and
resurrection throughout the course of the week. We can trace our own
inconsistent response to Christ as we hear today the crowds crying
“Hosanna, hosanna!” at Christ’s entry to Jerusalem, then a few days
later we cry out “Crucify him!” This is a week of extremes.
Holy Week is a good time for us to review some of our church
etiquette. This may not be a big issue for most of our “old-timers” but
for visitors reading this, or if you have relatives who only come to
Catholic Mass once in a while, it might be good to review. Of course,
more important than any of this is our faithfulness to love God
and love neighbor. Because we ar e a family of faith, and so all
might feel comfortable, there are some common courtesies and signs
of respect that help us keep in mind that we are in a special, sacred
space.
Hats: In the Chr istian tradition, men and boys uncover their
heads. As our culture becomes more secular, we can think of our
baseball cap as an essential adornment. In church (and even in school
and in the office), we don’t wear hats. (Of course, women are permitted to do so. This is a step forward perhaps because it used to be that
women HAD to cover their heads!).
Holy Water: When enter ing a Catholic chur ch, I often look
around for the holy water basin. The tradition is to dip a finger in the
holy water and make the sign of the cross as a reminder of our baptism, thus connecting us to this sacred space. People often do the same
as they leave as a reminder of our baptismal commitment.
Genuflection: Fr om the Fr ench wor ds for bending the knee, a
genuflection is a sign of respect to the Blessed Sacrament. The tradition is to “bend the knee” before entering the pew, or when entering
the church. When entering a new church, I will look around for the
red sanctuary lamp, indicating that the Blessed Sacrament is present
because many churches now reserve the Blessed Sacrament in a separate chapel. As we get older, we might find (as I am beginning to
find) that it takes a lot, or is impossible to genuflect (or to get back
up!). In that case a solemn bow (as we Dominicans call it) is appropriate.
