THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
3rd Sunday of Easter
3er Domingo de Pascua
"Jesus said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do
¡Qué hermosa es la Pascua! Es un tiempo donde el Espíritu
you love me?'" Three times, Simon Peter had denied Jesus.
Now, three times, the risen Christ gives Peter the opportunity to announce his love. Although Peter was "distressed"
by the Lord's repeated question, ultimately this must have
been a healing moment in Peter's life. He finally had the
opportunity to assure Jesus that he loved him, thereby making up for his earlier failure and weakness on the night of
the Crucifixion.
Jesus' death on the cross sufficed to forgive us of our sins.
But his resurrection assures us that there is new life on the
other side of our sinfulness. Just as Jesus had the power to
conquer death, so too through his grace we have the power
to conquer our sins. We can live a resurrected life, we can
have a new beginning, just as Peter did that day at the Sea
of Tiberias when he pledged his faith anew.
This pledge of faith, it's interesting to note, also came with a
kind of commission. Each time that Peter told the Lord he
loved him, Jesus responded with a command: "Feed my
lambs," "Tend my sheep," and "Feed my sheep." Of course,
we know that Jesus had already established Peter as the
"rock" on which he built his church, as the first pope. Now,
Jesus was emphasizing the connection between loving him-the Good Shepherd--and loving his people, his flock, his
church. Peter's love for Christ was meant to be manifested
in his love and care for the church, as is the case with every
pope. But it's also true for every Christian. We are called
not just to relish the gift of forgiveness and the grace of new
life in Christ, but to take the next step of loving and serving
those around us.

the envelope. The drawing will be held at the last
Wednesday of each month. The winner will win half

small fun way for the parish to raise money.

recibidos en Jerusalén, continuaron predicando a Cristo resucitado con la seguridad de que "Primero hay que obedecer
a Dios y luego a los hombres". ¿Crees que en la sociedad
actual hacemos lo mismo? ¿Qué concepto tenemos de la
obediencia? Al obedecer buscamos incansablemente la voluntad de Dios en nuestra vida. Esto nos traerá por consecuencia la fidelidad al Evangelio.
San Juan nos ubica en otra historia pascual de Jesús. Si recordamos bien, la semana pasada se apareció Jesús a sus
apóstoles en un cuarto donde estaban estos encerrados. Hoy
se aparece a la orilla del lago donde algunos de ellos salieron a pescar. La clave de esta historia es la encomienda
de Jesús a la misión del cuidado pastoral de las personas
que se nos han encomendado: "sean mis testigos, sean fieles
y obedezcan al Padre tal como yo lo he hecho". Como
ejemplo tenemos a Pedro quien de traicionar al Señor pasó
a ser la roca firme donde Cristo depositó su confianza. Dejemos que el Espíritu de Dios nos guíe, sabiendo que ya no
iremos a donde nosotros queramos sino a donde Dios nos
tiene determinado ir.

priests can visit them. The parish staff is always
looking to update our communion call list so that all
can celebrate the sacraments with regular frequency.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
From the Pastor’s Desk
Last Sunday I heard the news of the death of Monsignor John
Gallagher, the former pastor of St. Paul’s in Yonkers. I was so
sad to hear about it and then I became so grateful for this wonderful priest in my life and in my family’s life. He truly was an extraordinary individual. I think I have spoken about him a number
of times in my homilies over the years. I remember specifically
one time when the late Cardinal O’Connor was speaking to a
large gathering of priests and he singled out a priest, not by name,
who he was convinced was a living saint. Because of the details
that the Cardinal shared, especially of the way that the priest took
care of his brother throughout the day and yet still managed to be
so available to the people of his parish, I knew he was definitely
speaking about Mgr. Gallagher.
Let me tell you a little bit about him. He was born eighty-six
years ago and was raised with his little brother Mattie in the South
Bronx, not far from Yankee Stadium. His parents were quiet,
hardworking and very faithful Catholics. His little brother,
Mattie, was born with so many challenging disabilities, including
mental and physical issues. His parents cared and did all that they
could for Mattie including constructing a kind of traveling device
that looked like a “go-cart” so that they could take him for a stroll
outside their apartment or go to visit relatives. Mattie couldn’t
walk or talk. He basically grunted and groaned. His body had to
be rotated every couple of hours or else he would suffocate because of the liquid in his lungs that would build up. When the
parents passed on, Msgr. Gallagher became the primary care giver
for the rest of his life. With the help of relatives and good friends,
Mgr. Gallagher lived with, nourished and cared for his brother
until he died reaching eighty years old. Mattie was not expected
to live into his teenage years! Mgr. Gallagher wrote a little book
about his experience with his brother. Anyone from the Bronx
ought to read it. It is called, On Becoming a Person. It’s a marvelous little gem. It basically tells the tale of how Mgr. Gallagher
learned to enter the world of his brother and communicate with
him in ways no one else could. After reading the book, I said to
Msgr. Gallagher, “The title of your book is misleading. At first
one would think that this is the story of your brother becoming a
person. But it is really about you becoming a person, especially
by entering his world.” Mgr. Gallagher smiled at me and said,
“You got it, Tom!”
I don’t know how in the world Mgr. Gallagher managed to be
such a great pastor, a psychologist, a dedicated caregiver to his
brother and always so present to the needs of his people. For my
own family, I could share stories of how he helped my father and
visited him often when he was sick. He spent hours with him. He
visited my nephew, Timothy, every day at Sloan Kettering Hospital and helped him stay so positive during his illness. He saw
leadership qualities in my brother, Denis, and made him the first
parish council chairman in our parish. He was so horrified with
my brother’s death. In other words, he was simply always there
for us. Then I realize, my family’s story is only one story among
so many, many people.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of John Gallagher, your holy and
beautiful priest. I know you must be saying to him right now,
“Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter the kingdom prepared for you!” Indeed, thank you Lord!
Mensaje De Nuestro Pastor
El domingo pasado escuché la noticia de la muerte de Monseñor
John Gallagher, el ex pastor de St. Paul en Yonkers. Estuve tan
triste al escuchar acerca de esto, yo vengo a estar muy agradecido
por este maravilloso sacerdote en mi vida y en la vida de mi familia. Realmente fue una persona extraordinaria. Creo que les he
hablado de él varias veces en mis Homilías en estos años. Recuerdo específicamente una vez cuando el último Cardenal O'Connor estaba hablando en una gran reunión de sacerdotes y él
señaló a un sacerdote, no por su nombre, quien él estaba convencido que era un santo viviente. Debido a los detalles que el Cardenal compartió, sobre todo de la manera en que el sacerdote se hizo
cargo de su hermano a través del día y aún asi había logrado ser
tan accesible para la gente de su parroquia, supe que definitivamente estaba hablando acerca de Monseñor Gallagher.
Déjenme contarles un poco acerca de él. El nació hace ochenta y
seis años y fue criado con su pequeño hermano Mattie en el Sur
del Bronx, no lejos del estadio de los Yankees. Sus padres eran
tranquilos, fuertes trabajadores, y muy fieles católicos. Su hermano pequeño, Mattie, nació con muchas desafiantes discapacidades, incluyendo problemas físicos y mentales. Sus padres lo cuidaron e hicieron todo lo que pudieron por Mattie como construir
una especie de dispositivo de viaje que parecía un " Kart " para
que pudiera tomar un paseo fuera de su apartamento o ir a visitar
a sus familiares. Mattie no podía caminar o hablar. Básicamente,
gruñía y gemía. Su cuerpo tenia que ser girado cada dos horas o él
se podía sofocar con el líquido en sus pulmones que se le acumulaban. Cuando sus padres fallecieron, Mons. Gallagher vino a ser
el primer dador de atención primaria por el resto de su vida. Con
la ayuda de familiares y amigos, Mons. Gallagher vivió, alimentó
y cuidó de su hermano hasta que murió llegando a la edad de
ochenta años. ¡Mattie tenía esperanza vida sólo hasta su adolescencia! Mons. Gallagher escribió un pequeño libro sobre su experiencia con su hermano. Todos los del Bronx deberían de leerlo.
Es un Llamado para convertirse en una Persona. Es una pequeña
joya maravillosa. Básicamente narra la historia de cómo Mons.
Gallagher aprendió a entrar en el mundo de su hermano y comunicarse con él de una manera que nadie más podia. Después de
leer el libro, le dije a Monseñor Gallagher, el título de su libro es
engañoso. Al principio uno podría pensar que esta es la historia de
su hermano convirtiéndose en una persona. Pero en realidad es
acerca de usted convirtiéndose en esa persona, sobre todo por
entrar en su mundo Mons. Gallagher me sonrió y dijo:"¡Usted lo
dijo, Tom !".
No sé cómo en el mundo Mons. Gallagher se manejó para ser un
gran pastor, un psicólogo, un cuidador dedicado a su hermano y
siempre presente a las necesidades de su pueblo. Por mi propia

con él. Visitaba a mi sobrino Timoteo, todos los días en el Sloan
Kettering Hospital y le ayudó a permanecer tan positivo durante
su enfermedad. Vio cualidades de liderazgo en mi hermano
Denis y le hizo el primer presidente del Consejo Parroquial de
nuestra parroquia. El estuvo horrorizado con la muerte de mi hermano. En otras palabras, simplemente siempre estuvo alli para
nosotros. Entonces me doy cuenta, la historia de mi familia es
