Today I welcome you to the Feast of the Baptism of the
Lord.
I am reminded of a little story of two protestant ministers
and a priest talking about the problem that their parishes
were having being overrun by cats. One minister, sadly, said
he put the cats in bags and threw them into a nearby river. In
spite of that, the cats survived and now there were twice as
many cats. The other minister said that he was not in the
position to harm any of God’s creatures. So he confided that
he humanely trapped the cats and set them free a few miles
out of town. But three days later, the cats were back. Then
the Catholic priest bragged that he had the best and most
effective solution. He said, “I simply baptize them and I haven’t seen them in church since then!”
This is just a joke but it shows a sad reality that after baptism a number of baptized Christians are never, or seldom
ever, seen in church again. Just like this story of a priest who
was celebrating Midnight Mass before a jam-packed congregation which included numerous new faces, said, “Merry
Christmas, and while I have you here, Happy Easter!”
Some people wondered why he included Easter. After
the Mass, the priest explained, “It’s because the next time
they will show up in church will be on Easter.”
Today’s feast of the Lord’s Baptism is a great feast in the
sense that Jesus showed His solidarity and love with us.
A scripture scholar said that to understand the reason
why Jesus allowed himself to be baptized, we first need to
know what happened before He received His baptism. Before the baptism of Christ, John the Baptist was busy baptizing people who came to him. Our Lord knew this action of
John and for Him, those who came to see John the Baptist
were moving towards the direction of God the Father. With
this conviction, Christ identified Himself with the people in
their search for God. In other words, Jesus allows Himself to
be baptized too because He wants us to feel that He is one
with us in our longing and desire for God. He is baptized not
because He is conscious of sin and of the need for repentance, but because He knows that He too must identify Himself with the people and their journey forward towards God.
Another reason why the baptism of Jesus is important is
because it reveals two things: first, it reveals who He is,
namely, God’s own Son. And second, what He will do. This is
expressed by the prophet Isaiah in the first reading of this
Sunday. His mission as God’s Servant was to gather the
lambs in his arms, carry them in his bosom, and to lead them
with care.
Today’s feast also brings to an end the joyful season of
Christmas. Tomorrow all of our church decorations will be
taken down (volunteers will be welcome to assist with the
take down beginning at 9:30am). We return to Ordinary time
for just a short while. The Season of Lent comes early this
year with the celebration of Ash Wednesday on February
10th.
I invite you to not let the joy of Christmas vanish from
your daily lives. Continue to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. You were given that right at your own baptism. Keep the
flame of faith alive as was directed when your Godparents
received a lighted candle after your actual moment of Baptism. What a gift we have all received.

Hoy les doy la bienvenida a la fiesta del Bautismo
del Señor.
Me acuerdo de una pequeña historia sobre dos ministros protestantes y un sacerdote que platicaban
sobre el problema de que sus parroquias habían sido
invadidas por gatos. Un ministro, tristemente, dijo que
puso a los gatos en unas bolsas y las arrojó a un río
cercano. A pesar de ello, los gatos sobrevivieron y
ahora había el doble gatos. El otro ministro dijo que él
no estaba en posición de dañar a ninguna de las criaturas de Dios. Así que él confió que, de manera humanitaria, atrapaba los gatos y los ponía en libertad a
unas pocas millas fuera de la ciudad. Pero tres días
más tarde, los gatos estaban de vuelta. Entonces el
sacerdote católico, jactándose de que tenía la mejor y
más efectiva solución, les dijo: "¡Yo simplemente los
bautizo y no los he visto en la iglesia desde entonces!"

será para la Pascua."
La fiesta de hoy del Bautismo del Señor es una gran
fiesta en el sentido de que Jesús mostró su solidaridad
y amor con nosotros.
Un estudioso de las Sagradas Escrituras dijo que
para entender la razón por la cual Jesús quiso ser bautizado, primero tenemos que saber lo que pasó antes
de que Él recibiera su bautismo. Antes del bautismo
de Cristo, Juan el Bautista estaba muy ocupado bautizando a la gente que acudía a él. Nuestro Señor sabía
esta acción de Juan y para Él, los que venían a ver a
Juan el Bautista estaban siendo movidos en la dirección de Dios Padre. Con esta convicción, Cristo se
identificó con las personas en su búsqueda de Dios. En
otras palabras, Jesús se deja bautizados también, porque Él quiere que sintamos que Él es uno con nosotros
en nuestro anhelo y el deseo de Dios. Él no es bautizado porque Él tenga conciencia de pecado o necesidad
de arrepentimiento, sino porque Él sabe que Él también debe identificarse con el pueblo y su peregrinar
hacia Dios.
Otra razón por la cual el bautismo de Jesús es importante es porque revela dos cosas: primero, revela
lo que Él es, a saber, el mismísimo Hijo de Dios. Y en
segundo lugar, revela lo que hará. Esto se expresa por
medio del profeta Isaías en la primera lectura de este
domingo. Su misión como Siervo de Dios es la de reunir a los corderos en sus brazos, llevarlos en su seno,
y guiarlos con cuidado.
La fiesta de hoy también pone fin a la alegre temporada de la Navidad. Mañana retiraremos todas
nuestras decoraciones navideñas de la iglesia
(voluntarios son bienvenidos para ayudar a partir de
las 9:30 am). Volvemos a tiempo ordinario por sólo un
corto tiempo. El tiempo de Cuaresma viene pronto
este año con la celebración del Miércoles de Ceniza, el
10 de febrero.
Los invito a no dejar que la alegría de la Navidad
desaparezca de sus vidas diarias. Continúen proclamando la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Ese es el derecho de
todos ustedes, a partir de su propio bautismo. Mantenga la llama de la fe viva como les dijeron a sus padrinos cuando recibieron la vela encendida el día de su
Bautismo. ¡Qué regalo tan grande hemos recibido!

Multi Parish Mission
St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Simi Valley is hosting a three-day St. Jude Mission from January 11th to the January 13th, Monday through Wednesday of next week, at 7 PM each evening. Fr. Mike Ford, OP, Spiritual Director of
the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus in Chicago, explores St. Jude’s apostolate in light of God’s plan of Divine
Mercy, especially poignant as we begin this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Each evening participants will gather to recite the Rosary at 7 PM, followed by the celebration of Mass and St. Jude
devotions, concluding with veneration of the Arm Relic of St. Jude, reported to be the largest relic of an Apostle outside of Rome. On Wednesday, January 13th, Fr. Ford, OP, will celebrate a St. Jude Blessing Mass, followed by the
special blessing of St. Jude oil and blessings for participant seeking the intercession of St. Jude.

A Year of Mercy
There have been many Jubilee Years – 26 ordinary Jubilees and three extraordinary – and each has featured a special plenary indulgence.
This time around, Pope Francis is seeking to make the indulgence as widely
available as possible. In the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a Holy Door is
to be opened in every cathedral around the world, as well as in particular
shrines, such as the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where large numbers of pilgrims come to honor the mercy of God.
Even though we can only obtain one plenary indulgence a day, if you perform
the required actions for other plenary indulgences on the same day, you can still
obtain multiple partial indulgences.
To receive the Jubilee Year indulgence, you must fulfill the usual conditions,
(specified below) and perform the indulgence act: passing through a designated
Holy Door during the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy (between Dec. 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception, and Nov. 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King) or performing one of the corporal or spiritual works
of mercy.
As for the sick and the elderly, the Holy Father says, "For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and
suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who in the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of
trial, receiving communion or attending Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various means of communication, will be for them the means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence."
For the imprisoned, the Holy Father says, "They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. May the
gesture of directing their thought and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell signify for
them their passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to
transform bars into an experience of freedom."
You may receive the plenary indulgence yourself, or offer it for a person in purgatory. To receive a plenary indulgence the following must be followed: It is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the
indulgence work is completed.
A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in
the state of grace: have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass,
but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.
It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgence work is performed; but it is sufficient
that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days
(about 20) before or after the indulgence act. Prayer for the Pope's
intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an Our Father and a
Hail Mary are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.
For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except,
obviously, detachment from even venial sin).
Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls
of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on
earth.

Adult Confirmation
The Adult Confirmation Preparation classes are for
those who are 21 years of age and who have been baptized and received First Communion, but who have yet to
receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation
strengthens the graces we receive in Baptism and fills us
with an even greater share of the Holy Spirit. This Sacrament completes our initiation into the Catholic
Church.Classes will begin on January 4, 2016, at 7 p.m., at

Dear SPB Parishioners,
Happy New Year!
This year all the elementary schools in the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles have made a huge change in the type of
standardized testing we utilize for our students. For as
long as I can recall, we used to set aside two full weeks
every fall for testing. First we utilized the Stanford Test
(SAT), and more recently the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
(ITBS). These standardized tests were very lengthy; administered only once each year; tested the students’
knowledge from the previous school year; given only to
students in Grades 2-8; involved students filling out lots
and lots of rows of small circles with a No. 2 pencil; and
it always seemed to be the hottest two weeks of the
year when we were testing! Then we had to wait several weeks to receive the results from the testing company.
This school year the Archdiocese transitioned to the
online digital STAR Enterprise testing system for standardized assessment of students. This test is radically
different: the results are immediate; the tests are very
brief - only about 20 minutes for Math and 20 minutes
for Language Arts; each test is digital, so the difficulty of
the test adjusts for each student as they take the test;
all our students from Kindergarten through 8th Grade
take the STAR test; and the test is administered during
four “testing windows” each year, that are dictated by
the Archdiocese. All of these changes are great, and will
allow our teachers to craft curriculum to help better
meet the needs of each individual student and class. It
really is a paradigm shift in assessment from the type of
standardized testing we grew up with! We administer
the new STAR tests in our parish school’s state-of-theart Computer Lab on iMac computers. It is a brand new
year, and we have a brand new way of administering
standardized assessments here at Saint Paschal Baylon
School!

Today’s teens may seem to be always online, with constant messaging and sharing on social media with a large
audience. The internet is a great place to meet people,
but these meetings come with potential dangers that
can put kids and teens at risk. You don’t know who
you’re really talking to online. Pay attention to the sites
your kids on computers and mobile devices. Monitor the
sites that they visit and ask questions about who they
talk to and what information they provide to their online

El bautismo de Jesús y nuestro bautismo tienen un

reciben la catequesis prebautismal, no el niño ni la niña. Por eso tiene un sentido comunitario el compromiso bautismal. Es en la comunidad, por y para la comunidad, donde el bautismo tiene su sentido. Si bien todos
