On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Perhaps we can all pay closer attention and reflect on the words. During this year of mercy and especially during Lent we might look at the spiritual and corporal works of mercy found in that booklet Father Luis offered to the parish. Find one to work on during Lent. *Somewhere deep in the center ofyou, the Holy God is waiting. ©1987 Verse: Eileen Haugh O.S.F. Assisi Heights, Rochester, MN Jubilee Year of Mercy February 14, 2016 First Sunday of Lent On Ash Wednesday Pope Francis commissioned “Missionaries of Mercy,” priest-confessors sent forth worldwide as “living signs of the Father’s readiness to welcome those in search of [God’s] pardon.” In a way, though, Pope Francis challenges all of us to become “missionaries of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 18) by living Lent in this Jubilee Year of Mercy “more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (MV, 17). Francis bids us make the prophet Micah’s words our own: “God . . . who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency. You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins” (Micah 7:18, 19). Having experienced God’s mercy ourselves in the unconditional forgiveness of our sins, how eager we should be to invite others to know the peace of God’s boundless mercy; perhaps even to experience, through our reaching out in gentle kindness and compassionate care, something of God’s unconditional love for them. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Stewardship calls for us to share ourselves, to be a holy people, to step up and to take the risk of walking with our savior, Jesus Christ. God has given each of us different talents. They were given to us so that we can use them to help others. When we use our talents, we are saying “Thank you, God for the gifts you have given me.” When children are filling out their stewardship envelopes for mass, in the space next to talent they should write down how they helped someone this week. We are placing these acts of service on the bulletin board in the school lobby.
