CONFESSIONS SATURDAY 8:30 am to 10:00 am T he 90th anniversary year of Saint Theresa School has now begun. And soon, we will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Church of the Little Flower. According to reports, 1925 and 1926, which were the years of their foundations respectively, were amazing years in the history of Coral Gables and South Florida Catholicism. The roots of so much that we do (and have) today as a community can be traced back to those foundational years. Regarding our parish, though, the era immediately previous to our foundation is what explains how we got our name. Sister Theresa of Lisieux, France, a Carmelite nun, known for her exemplary religious life, her humility and sincerity, her “little way” en route to authentic holiness, her prayer for priests, her missionary zeal, and her authorship of the “Story of a Soul,” died in 1897 at the young age of 24. Her “nickname” was the “Little Flower.” The story of her profoundly spiritual life had been so impactful, endearing, and widely known, that she had a strong following of devotees, so much so that she was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1923. The same pope would later canonize “Theresa of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower” as a saint of the Catholic Church in 1925. Does the year look familiar? In the wake of these developments, new Catholic parishes throughout the world sprang up, many of which were placed under the patronage of this new young saint, Theresa, the Little Flower. With the ecclesial needs of the mission-territory of Florida growing by leaps and bounds, and the Catholic population in South Florida needing particular pastoral attention, the then late-Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley of Saint Augustine assigned Monsignor Thomas Comber to be the founding pastor of a new parish in the city of Coral Gables. The archbishop chose the name of the “Little Flower” to honor the newly canonized saint. Our parish, founded a mere months after the canonization, was the among the first five parishes in the United States to be named after St. Theresa, the Little Flower, the patronage of which has been a blessing for our community ever since. Our Gospel this weekend challenges followers of Christ to live lives of faith, not only with their lips, but with their hearts. In short, it is a call for intentional discipleship, a lived faith which reflects authenticity, deep roots, and sincerity. Saint Theresa, of course, was known for these virtues, which surely invite our personally chosen emulation. The anniversaries of our school and parish are tremendous opportunities to again capture a bit of the sentiment and grace that was at work at their beginnings. Let us honor the Lord, not only with our lips, but with our sincere hearts, deeply rooted in our faith in Him. Saint Theresa, pray for us! 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Follow us on Facebook and Twitter! PROTEST ON BEHALF OF LIFE: A BIG SUCCESS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ALTAR SOCIETY / LINENS MINISTRY Some 375 parishioners from Little Flower and parishes throughout Miami-Dade County courageously took a stand to raise consciousness about protecting the lives and body parts of infants in the womb. They lined up and down Kendall Drive at 114 Avenue, praying, holding placards and signs, and peace-fully protesting the recent new level of outrages against innocent human life. The manifestation drew priests and deacons, and members of the national leadership team of Respect Life. It even gained the attention of several media outlets. Thanks to all who courageously joined prayer with action in defense of life. The protest was a big success! Special towels called purificators, hand cloths, and corporals are used at every Mass. Over the course of a week, many of these are used and soiled, needing cleaning and pressing. We currently have a couple of exemplary and stately women of the parish who have taken charge of the laundering and pressing of these towels, so that each week we have a ready supply for our many liturgies. Additional volunteers, however, are now needed to share in this important gesture of loving service for the liturgy. Perhaps a retiree. Perhaps a teenager needing service hours. Perhaps someone willing to join in the humble work of the Church as a gesture of love. Please contact Maria Elena Chialastri at the parish office: 305-446-9950. For one reason or another, the story of some Catholic couples at times has unfolded to include marriage outside the Church’s Sacrament of Matrimony. Desiring to return to Holy Communion, there often comes a moment when these couples prayerfully decide that it is time to regularize their circumstances through obtaining an annulment of a past marriage, and the seeking of a con-validation of an existing union. The Church is deeply interested in assisting such couples. The graces found in the sacramental system of the Church are of enormous spiritual value. Information flyers are available at the doors of church for your convenience. Likewise, appointments can be made with any of the priests of the parish, and/or our Marriage Coordinator (Juan Del Sol), by calling the parish office at 305-446-9950. Let the Jubilee Year of Mercy be the occasion in which you are blessed by sacramental Marriage in the Church. THANKS FOR SUPPORTING SISTER CECILIA’S ORPHANAGE! Two weekend’s ago, Sister Cecilia from the Community of Charity and Social Services from Vietnam spoke at all the Masses at Little Flower. We are happy to report on the exemplary generosity that was shown her in support of the good work of her community. The second collection that day raised $13,391, which has already been sent for immediate use in support of the orphanage program. Thank you to all who gave from your heart to encourage sister’s good ministry.
