Partnership Pays Dividends
S
ix years ago, Lyondellbasell,
Austin Industries, and Galena
Park Independent School District
joined efforts to provide students and
teachers unique opportunities to learn the
technical skills of industrial construction.
Recognizing the current workforce was
rapidly approaching retirement, these
private industries decided to actively
participate in the specialty training required
of its new recruits. “This program is about
opening doors… we need good people,” said
Todd Monette, LyondellBasell Houston Site
Manager.
The first summer of the program, three
GPISD high school students were hired as
apprentices at Lyondellbasell. The students
were given the opportunity to work alongside
skilled technicians as they learned new skills
and techniques on-site at the facility. This
training opportunity has continued each
year; accordingly, five additional students
were employed this year. Presently, a total of
11 Galena Park Independent School District
students are apprentices at LyondellBasell.
As part of the partnership, employees
from LyondellBasell and Austin Industries
regularly visit the GPISD Welding and
Flexible Manufacturing classes to mentor
students in the techniques and standards
used in the industry. Students gain valuable
experience by repeating the techniques
under the supervision of plant supervisors.
In addition, many employees from
LyondellBasell and Austin Industries
volunteer to participate in GPISD career
days. These industry experts share their
experiences with the students and offer
information about skilled crafts careers and
the growing employment opportunities. The
close interaction allows students to gain
understanding about life working in the
industrial construction industry.
To ensure students are trained in
accordance with industry standards and
specifications, LyondellBasell regularly
donates supplies, tools and equipment to
Galena Park ISD’s technical programs.
Students use these valuable supplies to hone
their expertise and knowledge of the trade.
The collaborative partnership developed
by Anna Diaz of LyondellBasell, Donnie
McCoy of Austin Industries, and Vicki
Johnson, Galena Park ISD Career and
Technical Education Director, meets
the changing needs of the industries,
school district and community. Maggie
Sosa and plant manager Todd Monett of
LyondellBasell and Richard McConnell of
Austin Industries continue to work closely
with GPISD in this effort to adequately train
and develop the next generation of the labor
force.
Through close collaboration between
industry and educators, a vision has been
established to fulfill a growing need in this
community for years to come.

Future Farmer Finds Direction in FFA
N
orth Shore Senior High School student and Future
Farmers of America member, as well as officer,
Joshua Matheny has been a proud member of the FFA since
the age of 7 when he officially joined after the 2nd grade.
Throughout his 10 years in FFA, Joshua has shown cattle,
sheep, pigs, and more. He dedicates a great deal of his time
to the care of his animals. Early each morning, sometimes
before the sun rises, Joshua arrives at the barn to make sure
they have food and water. He usually returns after school to
make sure all is well, often staying into the early hours of the
morning. Joshua started showing chickens and rabbits while
still in elementary school. Soon, with the money he received
from the sale of his animals, Joshua was able to “graduate”
from chickens and rabbits to pigs and goats. As a fifth grader
he showed his first steer. However, according to Joshua, his
biggest accomplishment came as a high school student when
he was finally able to show his very own heifer.
Showing animals has led Joshua to travel around the state.
He participated in rodeos in Austin, San Antonio, and Ft.
Worth where he was also a part of the calf-scramble. Of
course, Joshua also showed in the Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo. He is currently a member of the Santa Gertrudis
Hereford Association, a breeding group that strives to
maintain the highest quality livestock. Joshua shows,

U.S. CONGRESSMAN URGES
STUDENTS TO VOTE
Representative Gene Green, from the
29th Congressional District of Texas,
spoke to students and faculty at North
Shore Senior High School on Friday,
March 23. He discussed the importance
of voting and encouraged students to
register to vote. He stressed that he
wasn’t concerned with who they voted
for, but indicated our democracy works
best when a majority of voters cast their
ballots. In town hall fashion, students
were able to ask their representative
questions. He answered each one with
openness and conviction.

ethic. To further his skills and
experience, this past year he
held an internship position at
a veterinary clinic in a nearby
town. Upon completion of the
internship, he took another job
at a truck washing company.
Additionally, in order to pay for
the rent on his 20-acre pasture
and barn, feed and care for his
animals, and save up for college,
he worked at a slaughterhouse.
Of course, this is all in addition
to his required schoolwork.
Joshua credits his older sister,
Jennifer, as the inspiration for
joining the FFA as a young boy.
Jennifer was also a member
and officer of Galena Park
High School’s FFA program.
Although his sister may have
been the inspiration, Joshua
adds, “My parents have been
extremely supportive. They
have been with me every step of
the way—driving me all over Texas and out of state… to
compete in the different rodeos.”
Joshua feels that FFA has shown him how to be a leader
and make clear goals for himself. It has helped define who
he is today and who he wants to become. “It’s been my drive
to move forward… It’s what has kept me out of trouble. It’s
been the most amazing thing in my life!”
Joshua graduated from North Shore Senior High School
Joshua Matheny has been part of FFA for 10 years.
this June. Joshua’s goal is to attend Sam Houston State
University to obtain a degree with a double major in
agriculture and political science. He is contemplating an
eventual move to a 600-acre plot of land north of Houston in
order to continue his career in agriculture. Once his ranch is
established, he will then consider entering the political field.
Boys and Girls Football Camp
Cory Redding, a current NFL defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts and former North
Shore Mustang and UT Longhorn, is holding his 6th annual 3D Football Camp. The
camp focuses on 3 D’s: Desire, Discipline and Dedication. Redding always brings some
NFL friends with him as well. This is a time of fun, learning and exercise with a local
sports legend.

Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools
Grant Helps Galena Park ISD Become Even Safer
and security of students, faculty and staff. It also makes possible more efficient communication between security personnel, administrators, campuses, first responders, and parents.
“In the midst of a crisis is not the time to become acquainted
with your emergency response teams. These exercises help
us build a true working relationship that is beneficial to both
the district and the community,” said Bryan Clements, GPISD
Police Chief and Executive Director of Technology.

alena Park ISD has been named one of four recipients in
the nation for the Readiness and Emergency Management
for Schools (REMS) Grant. The grant, worth over $300,000, is
enabling Galena Park ISD to enhance emergency preparedness
and further implement the National Incident Management
Systems (NIMS) by providing quality training to district and
campus leaders. Additionally, the District will also be able to
review and revise its emergency operations plans and conduct
building and facilities audits and other vulnerability assessments. The grant allows Galena Park ISD to improve the safety
The grant has already funded National Incident Management
System (NIMS) training and testing for employees throughout
the district. The first full-fledged crisis training scenario will
be held at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.
In order to qualify for the REMS Grant, Galena Park ISD had
to show a measure of proficiency in emergency management
procedures and communications. Fortunately, GPISD has long
established relationships with the community and law enforcement entities that service the areas encompassed by Galena
Park ISD. These partnerships result in an alliance where all entities work together to create a safe environment for everyone.
That longstanding commitment to the safety of the students
and community was essential in obtaining the funding.
6th Annual Galena Park ISD 5th Grade Olympiad

early 2,000 5th graders participated in the Galena Park ISD 6th Annual Olympiad at the Galena Park ISD stadium. The district-wide celebration allowed students from every elementary school to compete in 20 athletic events. The Olympiad has
become an occasion for all elementary students to look forward to in 5th grade. Activities range from relay races to tug-of-war,
but all focus on team achievement. Each elementary physical education teacher helps 5th grade students to prepare for the event
during the course of the year.
One of the originators of the Olympiad, Mr. Randy Marshall, physical education teacher for Jacinto City Elementary School
said, “GPISD elementary schools used to have a track meet against each other at Dement field in the late 60’s. As a Coach and
PE teacher I had been involved in this type of event for eight years with another school district…but as a Galena Park graduate, I thought it would be
a great idea to tie in some of the old traditions with the new stadium here in
Galena Park ISD.”
Mr. Ed Warken, Director of Athletics for Galena Park ISD also added, “Six
years ago we planned this event and divided the 15 schools into two groups:
‘Stars’ and ‘Stripes’. The teachers from each school could place three different students in each of the 20 events. We give ribbons for each event (8
places) and each 5thgrader receives a medal at the end of the day.” ‘You are a
champion’ is inscribed on the back of each medal to affirm the efforts of each
student.
On this day, one of those 5th graders representing Williamson Elementary in
the tug-of-war event was the son of Galena Park Middle School Principal Mr.
Chris Blake. “What makes the Olympiad special? It is the fact that fifteen
elementary schools come together, all of which represent Galena Park ISD,
for a day of friendly competition. It is also a day where all students succeed
together. For my son, it was an opportunity for him to join together with
his friends and classmates to work as a team–win or lose–knowing they did
their best to represent their school, which they are very proud of,” said Mr.
Blake. “The Galena Park ISD Olympiad displays the fact that today’s youth
must work together to achieve their goals, and that they can! Each school is
represented with excitement, enthusiasm and with a passion to succeed– all of
which are characteristics necessary to succeed in life,” Blake concluded.
The GPISD 5th Grade Olympiad will continue to be an event for students to
look forward to each year.

Your vote is your voice in the government.
For government to work properly, it is
important that a majority of the people use
their voice – their VOTE. Most people see
the significance of national elections like that
of the President of the United States. Equally
important, however, are the local elections.
Elections at the local and state level generally
tend to have a more direct impact on the
individual voter.
All districts in the State Board of Education
will have elections this year due to state redistricting. Each of these elections could have
a critical impact on local communities.
For example, the State Board of Education
is the board that determines what is taught
in our public schools. This is the group that
makes most of the decisions for the education
system in the state of Texas.

Summer Food Service Program Dates and Times

his summer, the Galena Park Independent School District will be sponsoring the Texas
Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program which will provide free
breakfasts and free lunches to all children 18 years of age and younger.
Student health and development is the main focus driving the program in Galena Park ISD.
Dorinda Eubanks, Director of Student Nutrition states, “Just as learning does not end when
school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition. During their critical growing

years, we want to give children every opportunity to maintain a nutritious diet during the
summer so they come back in the fall healthy and ready to learn.”
This program is scheduled to run from June 4 until July 24, 2012. Program dates and
serving times will vary. (See information listed below.) Children do not have to sign up for
meals; they simply need to come to the school cafeteria during serving hours. Regulations
require that meals must be eaten in the cafeteria.

Three-Peat
CALCULATOR TEAM WINS THIRD STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The North Shore Senior High School Calculator Applications Team competed in the
UIL State Math and Science competition on Monday, May 21 in Austin, TX. For the
THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR the team won the state title. “I’m just thrilled and real proud
of my kids. They had an amazing performance. It’s amazing how talented they are.
They worked hard and beat some of the smartest kids in the state,” said Don Kirby,
Calculator Applications Team coach.
The Math and Science competition is an advanced math, science and problem solving contest that develops skills used in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) careers. Students must know numerous mathematical techniques and practice
them in order to be able to recognize the problems and the proper method to solve
them. “Engineers are problem solvers. When someone has a problem, they go to an
engineer to design a solution. That’s what we’re developing here, a group of excellent
problem solvers,” noted Mr. Kirby.

La Asociación paga dividendos
H
ace seis años, Lyondellbasell,
Austin Industries y el Distrito
Escolar Independiente de Galena Park
unieron esfuerzos para brindar a los
estudiantes y maestros oportunidades
únicas para aprender destrezas técnicas de
construcción industrial. Reconociendo que
la fuerza laboral actual se estaba acercando
rápidamente a la jubilación, estas industrias
privadas decidieron participar activamente
en el entrenamiento especializado requerido
de sus nuevos reclutas. “Este programa
trata de abrir puertas… necesitamos gente
buena”, dijo Todd Monette, Gerente de
LyondellBasell en Houston.
El primer verano del programa, tres
estudiantes de preparatoria de GPISD
fueron contratados como aprendices en
Lyondellbasell. A los estudiantes se les
brindó la oportunidad para trabajar al lado
de técnicos expertos mientras que ellos
aprendían nuevas destrezas y técnicas en
las instalaciones del lugar. Esta oportunidad
de entrenamiento ha continuado cada año;
consecuentemente, cinco estudiantes más
fueron empleados este año. Actualmente,
un total de 11 estudiantes del Distrito
Escolar Independiente de Galena Park son
aprendices en Lyondellbasell.
Como parte de la sociedad, empleados de
Lyondellbasell y Austin Industries visitan
regularmente las clases de Soldadura y
Manufacturación Flexible de GPISD para
asesorar a los estudiantes en las técnicas y
estándares utilizados en la industria. Los
estudiantes obtienen experiencia valiosa al
repetir las técnicas bajo la observación de
los supervisores de la planta.

FUTURO AGRICULTOR ENCUENTRA DIRECCIÓN EN FFA

oshua Matheny, estudiante de la Preparatoria North
Shore Senior es miembro y dirigente de Futuros
Agricultores de Estados Unidos (FFA, por sus siglas en
inglés). Orgullosamente forma parte de esta organización
desde que se unió oficialmente después de cursar el 2º grado
de primaria.
A través de sus 10 años en FFA, Joshua ha exhibido reses,
ovejas, cerdos y otros animales. Él dedica gran parte de su
tiempo al cuidado de sus animales. Muy temprano cada
mañana, algunas veces antes de que salga el sol, Joshua
llega al establo para asegurarse que los animales tengan
alimento y agua. Usualmente regresa después de las clases
para asegurarse de que todo esté bien, muy a menudo
quedándose hasta tempranas horas de la mañana. Joshua
comenzó exhibiendo gallinas y conejos mientras estaba
en la primaria. Muy pronto, con el dinero que recibió por

El Representante Gene Green, del
Distrito Electoral 29 de Texas, les habló
a los estudiantes y personal docente
en la Preparatoria North Shore Senior
el viernes, 23 de marzo. Habló sobre
la importancia de votar y animó a los
estudiantes para registrarse para votar.
Enfatizó que no estaba preocupado por
quien votarían, pero indicó que nuestra
democracia trabaja mejor cuando una
mayoría de votantes emiten sus votos.
A manera de cabildo, los estudiantes
pudieron hacerle preguntas a su
representante. Él contestó a cada una
con franqueza y convicción.
Además de su experiencia en
la FFA, Joshua ha demostrado
ser un jovencito seguro,
autosuficiente y ambicioso
que ha mostrado habilidades
extraordinarias para los
negocios y ética en el trabajo.
Para aumentar sus destrezas y
experiencia, el año pasado hizo
una pasantía en una clínica
veterinaria en un pueblo cercano.
Una vez terminada su pasantía,
él tomó otro trabajo en una
compañía de lavado de camiones.
Además, para poder pagar la
renta de sus 20 acres de terreno
y establo, alimentar y cuidar a
sus animales, y ahorrar para el
colegio, trabajó tiempo parcial
y completo en un matadero. Por
supuesto, que esto es agregado a
su trabajo escolar requerido.
Joshua le da crédito a su
hermana mayor, Jennifer, como
la inspiración para unirse a la
FFA cuando era apenas un niño.
Jennifer también era miembro
y dirigente del programa FFA
de la Preparatoria Galena Park.
Aunque su hermana tal vez
ha sido la inspiración, Joshua
agrega, “Mis padres me han
apoyado mucho. Ellos han estado conmigo en cada paso del
camino—llevándome por todo Texas y fuera del estado…
para competir en los diferentes rodeos”.
Joshua siente que la FFA le ha mostrado como ser un líder
y fijarse metas claras para sí mismo. Le ha ayudado para
definir lo que es hoy en día y lo que quiere ser en el futuro.
“¡Ha sido mi motivación para seguir adelante… Es lo que
me ha mantenido fuera de los problemas. Ha sido la cosa
más asombrosa en mi vida!”
Joshua Matheny ha sido parte de FFA por 10 años.
Joshua se graduó de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior el
mes de junio. La meta de Joshua es asistir a la Universidad
Estatal Sam Houston para obtener un título con doble
especialización en Agricultura y Ciencias Políticas. Por
consiguiente, él está contemplando una mudanza a un
terreno de 600 acres al norte de Houston a fin de continuar
su carrera en agricultura. Una vez que su rancho esté
establecido, entonces considerará ingresar al campo de la
política.
Campamento de fútbol americano para niños y niñas
Cory Redding, actual jugador de posición defensiva en el equipo Indianapolis Colts
de la NFL y ex-North Shore Mustang y UT Longhorn, está llevando a cabo su 6º
Campamento Anual de Fútbol Americano 3D. El campamento se enfoca en 3 Ds:
Deseo, Disciplina y Dedicación. Además, Redding siempre trae consigo amigos de la
NFL. Este es tiempo de diversión, aprendizaje y ejercicio con una leyenda local del
deporte.

El Subsidio para Preparación y Manejo de Emergencias en las Escuelas
ayuda a Galena Park ISD a convertirse aún más seguro
de vulnerabilidad. El subsidio le permite a Galena Park ISD
mejorar la seguridad de los estudiantes, cuerpo docente y
personal. También hace posible que la comunicación sea más
eficiente entre el personal de seguridad, los administradores,
escuelas, primeros en responder y los padres. “En medio de
una crisis no es el momento idóneo para conocer a tus equipos
de respuesta de emergencia. Estos ejercicios nos ayudan a
crear una relación de trabajo verdadera que beneficia tanto al
distrito como a la comunidad”, expresó Bryan Clements, Jefe
de Policía de GPISD y Director Ejecutivo de Tecnología.
G
alena Park ISD ha sido nombrado uno de los cuatro
beneficiados en la nación por el Subsidio de Preparación y
Manejo de Emergencias en las Escuelas (REMS, por sus siglas
en inglés). El subsidio, con valor de más de $300,000 le permite
a Galena Park ISD aumentar los preparativos de emergencia
y además implementar el Sistema Nacional de Manejo de
Incidentes (NIMS, por sus siglas en inglés) al proporcionar
entrenamiento de calidad a los líderes del distrito y de las
escuelas. Por otra parte, el distrito también podrá estudiar
y revisar sus planes de operaciones de emergencia y llevar a
cabo auditorías en el edificio y las instalaciones y evaluaciones
El subsidio ya ha financiado el entrenamiento y prueba NIMS
para los empleados a lo largo del distrito. El primer escenario
completamente desarrollado de entrenamiento de crisis se
llevará a cabo al comienzo del año escolar 2012-13.
A fin de calificar para el Subsidio REMS, Galena Park ISD
tuvo que mostrar una medida de dominio en procedimientos
y comunicaciones en casos de emergencia. Afortunadamente,
GPISD tiene establecida una larga relación con la comunidad y las entidades del orden público que sirven las áreas que
abarca Galena Park ISD. Estas sociedades resultan en una
alianza donde todas las entidades trabajan unidas para crear un
ambiente seguro para todos. Este compromiso duradero para la
seguridad de los estudiantes y la comunidad fue esencial para
obtener los fondos.
6ta Olimpiada Anual de Galena Park ISD para 5º Grado
C
asi 2,000 estudiantes de quinto grado participaron en la 6ta Olimpiada Anual en el estadio Galena Park ISD. La celebración
a nivel distrito permitió a los estudiantes de cada escuela primaria competir en 20 eventos diferentes de atletismo. La
olimpiada se ha convertido en el acontecimiento que todos los estudiantes de primaria esperan con ansia en 5º grado. Las
actividades van desde carreras de relevos hasta jalar de la soga, pero todo se enfoca en el logro de equipo. Cada maestro de
educación física de primaria ayuda a los estudiantes de 5º grado a prepararlos para el evento durante el transcurso del año.
Uno de los iniciadores de la olimpiada, el Sr. Randy Marshall, maestro de educación física de la Primaria Jacinto City expresó,
“a finales de la década de 1960, las escuelas primarias de GPISD acostumbraban tener una competencia de atletismo entre sí en el
campo Dement. Como entrenador y maestro de Educación Física había estado involucrado en este tipo de eventos por ocho años
con otro distrito escolar… pero como un graduado de Galena Park, pensé que sería una fabulosa idea conectar algunas de las antiguas tradiciones con el nuevo estadio aquí en Galena Park ISD”.
El Sr. Ed Warken, Director de Atletismo de Galena Park ISD también
agregó, “Hace seis años planeamos este evento...y dividimos las 15 primarias en dos grupos ‘Stars’ y ‘Stripes’. Los maestros de cada primaria podrían
colocar tres estudiantes diferentes en cada uno de los 20 eventos. Damos
listones para cada evento (8 lugares) y cada estudiante de 5º grado recibe una
medalla al final del día”. La frase ‘You are a champion’ (Eres un campeón)
está inscrita en el reverso de cada medalla para constatar los esfuerzos de cada
estudiante.
En esta ocasión uno de los estudiantes de quinto grado representando a la
Primaria Williamson en el evento jala de la soga fue el hijo del Sr. Chris
Blake, director de la Secundaria Galena Park. “¿Qué hace a la olimpiada
especial? Es el hecho de que quince primarias se unen, las cuales representan
a Galena Park ISD, en un día de amistosa competencia. Es también un
día donde todos los estudiantes sobresalen juntos. Para mi hijo, fue una
oportunidad de reunirse con sus amigos y compañeros de clase para trabajar
como un equipo…ganar o perder…sabiendo que hicieron su mejor esfuerzo
para representar a su escuela, de la cual están muy orgullosos”, dijo el Sr.
Blake. “¡La Olimpiada de Galena Park ISD, exhibe el hecho de que la
juventud de hoy en día debe trabajar unida para lograr sus metas...y que lo
pueden hacer! Cada primaria es representada con emoción, entusiasmo y
pasión para triunfar…las cuales son características necesarias para tener éxito
en la vida”, finalizó Blake.
La Olimpiada de GPISD para 5º Grado continuará siendo un evento que los
estudiantes esperan cada año.

Fechas y horarios del Programa de Servicio de Alimentos en el Verano
E
ste verano, el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Galena Park patrocinará el Programa
de Servicio de Alimentos durante el Verano del Departamento de Agricultura de Texas
el cual proporcionará Desayunos y Almuerzos Gratuitos a todos los niños de 18 años de
edad y menores.
La salud y desarrollo del estudiante es el enfoque principal que opera el programa en Galena Park ISD. Dorinda Eubanks, Directora de Nutrición del Estudiante dice, “Al igual que
el aprendizaje no se acaba cuando termina el año escolar, tampoco se termina la necesidad
de una buena nutrición para los niños. Durante sus años críticos de crecimiento, queremos

Tri-Campeón
EL EQUIPO DE CALCULADORA GANA EL TERCER CAMPEONATO ESTATAL CONSECUTIVO
El Equipo de Aplicaciones de Calculadora de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior participó en
la competencia Estatal UIL de Matemáticas y Ciencias el lunes, 21 de mayo en Austin, TX. Por
TERCER AÑO CONSECUTIVO el equipo gana el título estatal. “Solo estoy emocionado y
realmente orgulloso de mis muchachos. Tuvieron una participación asombrosa. Es increíble lo
talentoso que son. Trabajaron arduamente y vencieron algunos de los estudiantes más inteligentes
en el estado”, expresó Don Kirby, instructor del Equipo de Aplicaciones de Calculadora.
La competencia de Matemáticas y Ciencias es un concurso de matemáticas avanzadas, ciencias
y solución de problemas que desarrolla habilidades utilizadas en las carreras de Ciencias,
Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés). Los estudiantes deben
saber numerosas técnicas de matemáticas y practicarlas a fin de poder reconocer los problemas y
el método apropiado para resolverlos. “Los ingenieros tienen habilidad para resolver problemas.
Cuando alguien tiene un problema, acude a un ingeniero para diseñar una solución. Eso es lo
que estamos desarrollando aquí... un grupo de excelentes personas con habilidades para resolver
problemas,” señaló el Sr. Kirby.
